Ethan Hawke Joins ‘Total Recall’ Remake in Mystery Role

Kuato lives! Or rather, Kuato will be born again in Len Wiseman’s remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film Total Recall. But who will appear alongside him?

Colin Farrell was confirmed as the lead back in January. Then, Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston joined the cast as a villain at the end of March. Most recently, we reported that Kate Beckinsale (Wiseman’s wife and the star of his Underworld films) was in talks for one of the two female leads in the film.

Now, another interesting piece of casting news has come out, with The Hollywood Reporter asserting that Ethan Hawke has joined the film in a mystery cameo role. Will Hawke play Kuato? Perhaps, he’s the three-breasted alien? Only time will tell!

In all seriousness, I’m still not entirely sure about a Total Recall remake. While it may not be a classic, and it probably fits the requirements for Screen Rant’s rules for remakes, I quite enjoy Paul Verhoeven’s original film and have yet to be totally sold on Wiseman’s vision for the remake, which doesn’t take place on Mars -transplanting the story to Earth and making it more realistic.

That being said, I’m not crazy enough to think that everything would be okay if Arnold Schwarzenegger simply suited back up and returned to the 1980s/1990s action hero roots (as some folks on the Internet seem to believe). While the Governator has plenty of options (here are a few sequels we hope he doesn’t take), the fact of the matter is that Hollywood is on a remake spree and younger, hipper actors are seeing the benefits.

In any case, Ethan Hawke is now in the movie. Does that make you want to see it more, less, or neither? Also, I know I keep joking about the three-breasted alien but, honestly, is there a more memorable part of the original film?

  1. WHAT ?! It doesn’t take place on Mars ?

    This is TOTAL STUPID

  2. Haha its funny but there isn’t a more memorable moment in that film. I know there are a lot of people hating on this film. But I love the cast for this film (became a big fan of Colin after In Bruges)
I think this will be a big hit as long as they don’t go the PG 13 rout which to many studios do now. I’m sure they won’t…..

  3. Very bad idea, quality film in the first place and Colin Farrel is a tool plain and simple. Throw Kate Beckinsale into the mix (probably as Sharon Stones character), a lady with obvious beauty but no acting talent at all and this will be one massive load. Michael Ironside and Ronny Cox were perfect for the villians in this movie, un-replaceable in my opinion.

Being from England that is hard to say this about Kate but her father was a comedy legend but Kate does fall short in acting and needs some lessons on dialogue and also accents.

  4. My first thought was that he had been cast as Richter until I read that it is merely a cameo appearance. Nevertheless, it would be good if Colin Farrell and Ethan Hawke have a scene together.

I hope former California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger will have a cameo in Total Recall and share a scene with Colin Farrell, perhaps telling him to have fun.

    • Careful, that was done in the “The Rundown” with the Rock Dwayne Johnson..! LOL

  5. I personally think they should have Arnie in a chair at Recall when Ferrell goes in and Arnie is describing his new girl friend from Recall and he says her name is anything but Maria , lol

  6. I agree. If it’s not on MARS, what’s the point of calling it a “remake” – it totally defies the purpose of the films direction. WASTE of TIME. Arnie’s version was much better and made in the 80′s-90′s! C’mon guys, get some NEW ORIGINAL CONTENT AND FILM IDEAS GOING!!!

  7. Ack!

What do Ethan Hawke & Colin Farrell have in common?

I am pretty sure both have been killed by Stewie on Family Guy for “douchiness”. LOL

  8. So hollywood is doing a remake where they change pretty much everything about the movie, and then they wonder why people don’t want to see it. Does this not sound like a bad pitch idea at some producers meeting?

  9. WHAT!! Total Recall not a classic! sure it is! “You blabed Quade! you blabed about Mars!” and “I got 5 kids to feed” total classic… anyway it’s a TOTAL shame they’re redoing this movie, and on top of that not being on Mars… TERRIBLE!!!

  10. Why doest every hate Colin? He hasnt been the same actor since 2007. Last 4 years he has done a Ben affleck to his career. He isn’t the same actor in dare devil and Miami vice. Since 07 he’s been in films like in Bruges, crazy heart, the way back, London boulevard. Not all of his films have been great but they were atleast ambitious. He has shown some serious acting chops. This cast is great only thing I’m concerned about is the director.

  11. If I’m not mistaken in the original short story the hero never actually goes to Mars. Dick had a unique style whether they copy that or better reflect that in a new script is a wait and see game…
