It's been said that Captain Marvel will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most powerful superhero, but that may not be true for long. If Phase 4 includes The Eternals, Captain Marvel will quickly be surpassed by an entire race of superhuman immortals. An Eternals movie has been rumored to be in development for Phase 4 since April. Matthew and Ryan Firpo, two rising names in Hollywood, have been hired to pen the script for the film.

According to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, an Eternals movie could explore the history of the MCU, considering that in the comics, the characters have lived on Earth for thousands of years. The Eternals are the creations of the space gods known as the Celestials and are known to dwell in different planets all over the universe, though the comics generally focus on the group that lives in the secret city of Olympia in Greece.

If introduced in their own movie, the Eternals would be the MCU's most powerful superheroes. The Eternals have a shared set of superpowers. Every character has enhanced superhuman strength, durability, telepathy, the power of flight, and the ability to shoot beams of energy from their eyes. All Eternals can also create illusions and manipulate matter. Just one of these abilities alone is enough to be a formidable superhero, but all of them combined puts each of the Eternals on the same level as DC's Superman.

As their name implies, the Eternals cannot die. The only way to "kill" an Eternal is to destroy all of their molecules so that they can't regenerate. However, some Eternals have still been able to come back from that.

On top of their shared abilities, many of the Eternals have their own unique power or attribute that sets them apart from the rest. Thanos' brother, Starfox, can manipulate the pleasure center in a person's brain, Gilgamesh is as strong as Thor, Makkari is so fast that he can outrun Quicksilver, and Sersi can manipulate matter on a scale that outshines all other Eternals. Sersi can reshape the molecules in any object or living creature.

Of course, it should be noted that Marvel doesn't have to accurately adapt all of their powers to the big screen. The MCU has been known to take a few liberties with certain characters and their abilities, such as Mantis and Scarlet Witch. That said, most depictions of Marvel characters' powers have been faithful to the source material, so fans should expect a similar treatment for the Eternals.

The introduction of the Eternals has the potential to fill up the MCU with immensely powerful heroes who could hang around for years to come. So, while Captain Marvel is soon to become the MCU's most powerful hero, that will change the moment The Eternals movie debuts.
