Earlier this year, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone attempted two solo comeback vehicles with The Last Stand and Bullet to the HeadBoth films underperformed (despite being enjoyable action romps), suggesting that audiences only want more of these action legends within the confines of their throwback '80s ensembles in The Expendables series.

The upcoming Schwarzenegger/Stallone team-up flick Escape Plan looks ready to challenge that assumption. Stallone plays structural security expert Ray Breslin, who commits the cardinal sin of old-school action flicks: He accepts one last job before retiring. The gig? Breaking out of the world's most high-tech - and super-secret - prison, known as "The Tomb," which was the film’s original title. Things go wrong, of course, and Breslin is betrayed and locked inside. He ends up planning a seemingly impossible breakout along with another inmate, Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger).

The movie's trailer showcases the two stars while avoiding any kind of running gag about how old they are (which was probably the big mistake made by the marketing teams on their respective 2013 solo outings). Now, a clip from the film provides a longer look at something we've (kind of) always wanted to see: a fistfight between Rambo and the Terminator. Check it out above.

the escape plan - arnie and sly

The movie looks like a big cheese festival, but while Stallone looks a bit exhausted, Arnie actually seems to be having a ball. It certainly helps that the supporting cast looks unexpectedly strong, with Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest), Amy Ryan (The Office), Vincent D’Onofrio (Sinister), Sam Neil (Jurassic Park), Vinnie Jones (Snatch), 50 Cent (Gun), and more.

While director Mikael Håfström has more experience with supernatural horror-thrillers like 1408 and The Rite, his films are generally competently put together - even if they are exercises in style over substance. For Escape Plan, do we need much more than that? The script is credited to Machine Gun Preacher scribe Jason Keller (credited here as Arnell Jesko), who revised an original screenplay by Miles Chapman (Road House 2: Last Call), who also receives story credit.

Let's face it, if you grew up on cornball '80s action flicks, this one looks kind of fun, and it seems like it's been constructed with a bit more care than it probably deserves.

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Will you be seeing Escape Plan? Are you waiting for an official Terminator/Rambo crossover instead? Sound off in the comments!
