Countless toys and board games from Hasbro are in the works – from Candyland to Battleship – but it looks like Meccano is getting in on the action with a movie based on its Erector Set line of construction toys.

Yes, you read that right…

The news comes from a press release that provides details on the Erector Set movie: An exclusive partnership has been struck between Meccano Toy Company and independent production company, Helix Films, to develop a 3D feature version of the popular Erector Set toy. In case you’re from somewhere other than the U.S., you may know the construction toy as simply “Meccano.”

Perhaps you were one of those kids who played with toy guns and soldiers and didn’t bother with building stuff, so here’s basically what an Erector Set is: it features an array of re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears, with nuts and bolts to connect the pieces. It’s hugely popular, being sold in almost 100 different countries. This will mark the first time Meccano has licensed film rights to any of its toys.

The Santa Monica-based Helix is developing a script for a 3D (what a surprise…) fantasy/adventure film based on the Erector Set toy line, with eyes on a franchise that could extend into other mediums like TV and video games. In this day and age that sort of thing is pretty much inevitable, no?

Here’s what business exec for Helix, Steven Charles-Jaffe, said about the partnership with Meccano:

“The three partners of Helix Films all grew up playing with Erector Set toys but in different countries—Kevin Foo in Australia, Gaukhar Noortas in Kazakhstan and me and my brother Robert in the U.S.—so our partnership with Meccano is very personal, as well as exciting… We believe the iconic Erector brand offers generational appeal with global reach, providing a tremendous platform to create a thrilling film franchise that boys, girls and adults will all adore.”

I’d like to think that Hollywood has run out of toys and board games to liscence for movies but it appears the trend continues, full steam ahead. Erector Set (us Brits know it as Meccano) is not the first toy line that jumps to mind when thinking about toys suited for the big screen – and, as is mostly the case with these adaptations, it appears they’re just using the brand idea (the name I reckon they’ll change for obvious reasons… :-) ) because it’s a known property. It’s not as if there’s a story there that  they can literally translate, so it boils down to making one up. In that case what’s the point of it being based on the Erector Set?

Do you think making a movie based on Erector Set can work? Are you surprised they’re reaching this far for ideas?
