This article contains spoilers for Enola Holmes 2.Starring Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock Holmes' younger sister, Enola Holmes 2 clearly sets up another sequel. A remarkable modernization of the Sherlock Holmes franchise, the Enola Holmes films are based on the best-selling books by author Nancy Springer. The Netflix films have been successful in part because of stellar casting choices, with attention focusing on Millie Bobby Brown's Enola and Henry Cavill's Sherlock.

Enola Holmes 2 continues the story of Sherlock's younger sister, as she attempts to establish a reputation as a detective in her own right. This isn't an easy task for a teenage girl in Victorian London, with most potential clients asking whether Enola can refer them to her more famous brother. The story that follows is a fascinating blend of socially-aware detective fiction and real-world history, as Enola finds herself drawn into the story of the Matchgirls Strike. The first Enola Holmes movie had discussed the Third Reform Act, a key moment in British democratic history, and now the story broadens out to discuss empowerment in a wider context. It also clearly sets up Enola Holmes 3.

Will Netflix Make Enola Holmes 3? It Seems Likely

Enola Holmes 2 Chase

Netflix is yet to confirm there will be an Enola Holmes 3, and usually wait to see how a film or TV show performs before making any official announcements. In this case, though, it seems very likely indeed to happen; the first Enola Holmes was one of Netflix's biggest successes, with the streaming giant revealing 76 million households watched the Netflix Original in the crucial first four weeks after release. Enola Holmes 2 has met with tremendous critical acclaim, and it's easy to imagine this series of films becoming one of Netflix's biggest, and longest-running, franchises.

How Many More Enola Holmes Books Are There

Enola Holmes Stars

Nancy Springer has written eight Enola Holmes books, and most viewers will therefore assume the franchise should have a long way to run. It's important to note, though, that Enola Holmes 2 massively changes the books, with Louis Partridge's Lord Tewkesbury becoming a recurring character and a major love interest. The differences between the novels and Netflix movies will surely increase in Enola Holmes 3, so the number of books should hardly be taken as a limit to the franchise's success. Given the Enola Holmes films have focused so much on tying its star in to democratic and social change in the U.K., it's possible the only real limit lies in British history - which effectively means there is none at all.

Enola Holmes 3 Story: What Enola Holmes 2 Set Up

Enola Holmes 2 focuses on the relationship between Millie Bobby Brown's Enola and Henry Cavill's Sherlock Holmes, and the two find a balance by the end of the film. The partnership between Sherlock and Enola is a delightful one, with Enola initially trying to compete with her older brother but ultimately teaming up with him; she concludes that they can each operate in their own spheres, co-existing in London due to their different focuses. Sherlock will deal with the wealthy and prestigious clients, while Enola tackles issues on the streets, an approach that further means she will surely find herself dealing with other issues of social change.

In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original novels and short stories, Sherlock had a group of street informants known as the Baker Street Irregulars. It seems likely that, in the Enola Holmes franchise, it will be Enola who establishes this group. It's impossible to say whether that will happen in Enola Holmes 3, however, or further down the line.

Enola Holmes 3 Cast: Who Could Return?

Millie Bobby Brown Enola Holmes and Helena Bonham Carter

Enola Holmes 3 will surely feature the main returning cast; Millie Bobby Brown loved working on Enola Holmes 2, describing it as the "most important moment in [her] career" so far due to her increased involvement with the production at all levels. She will presumably be joined by Louis Partridge's Lord Tewkesbury, who has clearly been positioned as a recurring character along with Helena Bonham Carter's Eudoria Holmes (another deviation from the books). Hopfully Henry Cavill will be able to clear up his schedule for Enola Holmes 3 as well, and viewers will get to see his relationship with the franchise's version of Doctor Watson (played by Himesh Patel).

Enola Holmes 3 Release Date Prediction

The first Enola Holmes film released in September 2020, and production on the sequel didn't begin until fall 2021 - likely reflecting the busy schedules of both Brown and Cavill. Brown will no doubt be prioritizing Stranger Things season 5 (expected to begin production in early 2023), while Cavill's busy schedule includes Man of Steel 2 and The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, where he'll be playing James Bond creator Ian Fleming in a World War II spy drama. Sadly, this means viewers will probably have to wait some time for Enola Holmes 3, perhaps even until late 2024.

Enola Holmes 2 is streaming now on Netflix.
