Emma Thompson is in talks to join the cast of Sony Pictures upcoming Men In Black 3. The third instillation in the Men In Black series is set to be released in 2012, a full ten years after the release of Men In Black 2. Thankfully, we will see a return of the films two central characters; Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith will reprise their roles as Agent K and Agent J.
The story has Agent J (Smith) time traveling to 1969 in order to battle aliens with the help of a much younger version of Agent K, played by Josh Brolin. Thompson would portray a hard-nosed MIB agent, Agent O, who is tasked with monitoring a prison breakout. We assume the prisoners are not of the human variety, but rather the “cockroach from a galaxy far, far away” variety.
The director of the original two movies, Barry Sonnenfeld is set to helm the film; and David Koepp wrote the most recent version of the screenplay. The Flight Of The Conchords actor Jemaine Clement is reportedly being tapped to play the villain in the film.
Men In Black 1 and 2 were both well loved (well, the first one much moreso) and large box office success, with a combined worldwide box office gross of about a billion dollars. With studios investing more and more in brand loyalty and franchise development the return of the Men In Black universe is not surprising. The films are funny, clever; action packed, and have a nice ability to be sentimental without being all gooey about it. With such a strong cast already in place, Emma Thompson would be a very welcome addition to the Men In Black team.
MIB3 will begin shooting later this month in New York, and is due to be released in 2012.
