A couple of months ago, it seemed that The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt was going to fully breakout and become a household name when it was reported that she may be playing the Black Widow in the upcoming comic book movie sequel Iron Man 2. But then in a cruel twist of fate, she was officially announced as "out" of the film because of scheduling conflicts with her starring in the upcoming Gulliver's Travels film.

So what does Blunt have to say about her losing what would have been a very widely seen role in Iron Man 2 in lieu of another film? Well, in a recent interview with MTV she shared her thoughts on the matter:

"It was one of things that was conflicting... So it's a shame the two of them couldn't work together. It just got complicated, so I think I had to pull out for my own sanity more than anything."

Although happy to give out her thoughts on her losing the role, she was unwilling to give any details about the character and how it will function within the story (for instance if she will be some sort of love interest for Tony Stark):

"See, that's the other thing, I can't give anything away on that front... I'm not going to say! I'm not going to say! I'm going to get someone in trouble. Look at me, I'm such a goody-two-shoes!"

And to finish off she gave a little opinion on Scarlett Johannson getting the gig instead of her:

"She'll do a great job... She'll get up on that high-wire and do a great job."

On the casting front, Blunt not getting the role of the Black Widow isn't necessarily the worst news possible. People's interest has been more on Mickey Rourke playing the villain Crimson Dynamo (which thankfully has been confirmed).

However, all other things being equal, I would've liked to see Blunt play the role (I'm sure I'm not alone in that one, at least when compared to Johansson) - she sits at that perfect level for a role like this in that she's a big enough name that people have heard of her, but still not too big that it would detract from our investment in her as the character (something Johansson will most definitely have against her).

One thing which confuses me a little is why she decided to do Gulliver's Travels over Iron Man 2. Both are going to be high-profile films, but Iron Man 2 and the role of the Black Widow would get her ten times more exposure and name recognition. Maybe she has some sort of personal liking for the classic Jonathan Swift tale Gulliver's Travels, or perhaps the inevitably lower level of pure physical acting work that it would mean for her, played a big part in why she choose one over the other.

What do you think of Blunt not being the Black Widow in Iron Man 2? Should she have chosen Gulliver's Travels over it?

Iron Man 2 is scheduled to open on May 7th, 2010. No release date has been set for Gulliver's Travels.
