emily blunt the wolfman Emily Blunt Speaks Out About Losing Iron Man 2 Role

A couple of months ago, it seemed that The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt was going to fully breakout and become a household name when it was reported that she may be playing the Black Widow in the upcoming comic book movie sequel Iron Man 2. But then in a cruel twist of fate, she was officially announced as “out” of the film because of scheduling conflicts with her starring in the upcoming Gulliver’s Travels film.

So what does Blunt have to say about her losing what would have been a very widely seen role in Iron Man 2 in lieu of another film? Well, in a recent interview with MTV she shared her thoughts on the matter:

“It was one of things that was conflicting… So it’s a shame the two of them couldn’t work together. It just got complicated, so I think I had to pull out for my own sanity more than anything.”

Although happy to give out her thoughts on her losing the role, she was unwilling to give any details about the character and how it will function within the story (for instance if she will be some sort of love interest for Tony Stark):

“See, that’s the other thing, I can’t give anything away on that front… I’m not going to say! I’m not going to say! I’m going to get someone in trouble. Look at me, I’m such a goody-two-shoes!”

And to finish off she gave a little opinion on Scarlett Johannson getting the gig instead of her:

“She’ll do a great job… She’ll get up on that high-wire and do a great job.”

On the casting front, Blunt not getting the role of the Black Widow isn’t necessarily the worst news possible. People’s interest has been more on Mickey Rourke playing the villain Crimson Dynamo (which thankfully has been confirmed).

However, all other things being equal, I would’ve liked to see Blunt play the role (I’m sure I’m not alone in that one, at least when compared to Johansson) – she sits at that perfect level for a role like this in that she’s a big enough name that people have heard of her, but still not too big that it would detract from our investment in her as the character (something Johansson will most definitely have against her).

One thing which confuses me a little is why she decided to do Gulliver’s Travels over Iron Man 2. Both are going to be high-profile films, but Iron Man 2 and the role of the Black Widow would get her ten times more exposure and name recognition. Maybe she has some sort of personal liking for the classic Jonathan Swift tale Gulliver’s Travels, or perhaps the inevitably lower level of pure physical acting work that it would mean for her, played a big part in why she choose one over the other.

What do you think of Blunt not being the Black Widow in Iron Man 2? Should she have chosen Gulliver’s Travels over it?

Iron Man 2 is scheduled to open on May 7th, 2010. No release date has been set for Gulliver’s Travels.

  1. Nice read. Glad to see the confirmation of Mikey role in Ironman 2 and very interested to see behind the scene footage of Johansson training/prepping for the role to see if she can carry the part.

  2. i would have chosen iron man 2

maybe she is not the kind of gal that wants to do action/adventure flicks…

  3. She had to is the answer. She was contractually obliged to do 3 films for them before the end of 09 and so she couldn’t do Iron Man. By force!!!

  4. After reading this and another interview with Blunt where she seemed actually “bummed out” about not getting the role, I’m sad that she didn’t. Not just for the sake of the role (she looks right for it) but for her sake too. I hate seeing people get excited for something then get let down. Don’t know why, but it gets to me.

  5. Gulliver’s Travels, is this the same one that is starring Jack Black? Oh, yea, that is going to be great.
    Prognosis Negative!

That is a very nice picture of Blunt, Ross, good job in picking that one!

  6. I wonder if the Gulliver’s Travels role offered more money? Because I can’t see why ANYONE would want to work with Jack Black if that is indeed the movie.

  7. A shame really. Blunt is just great for the role while Johansson is somewhat overrated. She should have chosen Iron Man 2, just thinking the character will be in The Avengers which is expected to do a lot of money. But well, I’m glad to hear Rourke’s character.

  8. She did not chose Gulliver’s Travels over Iron Man 2. She was optioned by 20th Century Fox which is doing the Gulliver’s Travels movie. They had on option because of the Devil Wears Prada. It was in her contract. They pulled her basically from Iron Man.

  9. Alex B and Homer are right, its not that she chose it over Iron Man 2, its that shes under contract with Fox.

  10. with aheavy heart, i must say i’d almost boycott this one, rather than suffer the stifling, smarmy-hipster-sleepwalk that is johannsen’s current stock in trade.. maybe she can start to cultivate a solid crystal meth habit (and some acting lessons) before rehearsals. darn!! and i had such blazing high hopes for this sequel!!! its a typical case of the industry suits, all high five-ing each other in a hermetically sealed environment (like, Watchmen, anyone?)

  11. Ross, like others have said – she did not choose it. She badly wanted to do IM2 but Fox exercised the clause in her contract from ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and she was left with no choice. Now that it’s all over, I look forward to SJ as BW.

  12. this one hurts.. Not only because Emily was perfect for the black widow *sobs* but because now we are stuck with scarlett *gags* who intead of playing as a threat for pepper (if they go that way, which I’m sure they will) will look like just another bimbo … And think I have to stand her all the way through the avengers *cries*

    Why Emily, Why!!!
