The Five Year Engagement Emily Blunt Jason Segel Why Emily Blunt Said No To Captain America

While the casting process for the role of Peggy Carter in The First Avenger: Captain America wasn’t as confusing or rumor-infused as it was for  Marvel Studios making the choice of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, there were still a few names in the running for the leading actress.

When it came down to it, director Joe Johnston and Marvel chose Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter in Captain America, but she wasn’t their first choice. Rumors hit the web a few weeks back that Emily Blunt, who worked with Johnston on The Wolfman, was offered the part but turned it down. Why? The speculation pointed towards the possibility of her gunning for the role of Catwoman in Batman 3. Now we have confirmation that she did in fact, turn the role down and some of the reasons why…

MTV had the chance to talk with Emily Blunt about her turning down the part and how close her husband, John Krasinski, came to playing the title character. The first thing she made sure to point out is that her refusing the part was in no part due to her relationship with director, who she has positive words for.

“I’m a big supporter of [director] Joe Johnston and I think that ‘Captain America’ is going to be really fun and I gather that the story is really interesting… It just wasn’t what I wanted to do next, to be honest.”

The role of Peggy Carter came with a multi-picture contract and this was something Blunt wasn’t interested in and/or ready for. Blunt is known for doing indie pictures and taking on Captain America would mean she’d be obligated for sequels and a possible appearance in The Avengers. He current interest was to shoot a comedy as her next picture.

“There’s definitely a high commitment level and I’m not someone who likes to plan too much ahead… That would also be an issue for me as well.”

What is it going to take to get this girl in a Marvel movie? She had the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2 but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts and now she turns down this part. Third time’s a charm? Nope. We wouldn’t be talking about this if her hubby got the gig of the star-spangled Avenger I’m sure.

With Blunt out, HayleyAtwell still beat out the likes of Keira Knightley and Alice Eve. Atwell joins Chris Evans is Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes and Hugo Weaving is the villainous Red Skull. Are you happy with Hayley Atwell playing Peggy Carter?

Still think Blunt has a shot at Catwoman if she turns out to be a character in Batman 3? Any other Marvel movie roles you can think of for Blunt to turn down in the future?

  1. no.they are not. they know how some these actors think and are trying to lock them in when they are young..at least with a contract, especially for more than one flick-its guaranteed work regardless..work in hollywood is pretty tight nowadays-just ask John Malkovich…To turn down a 4 picture deal is just stupid-not many actresses get that deal..

  2. if you look at Chris Evans career up to this point-ehh..even “the Losers” is losing and he was the best part of that..Evans prolly has made the best decision of his career-also he can still do other films in between…its called steady work..

  3. there is also money fom the dvds and tv as well..Evans is set for life nuff said..Blunt just did the ultimate fail by refusing…its not even a headlining role so wtf was she thinking..

  4. Blunt has every studio offering her roles. She doesn't need Captain America at all. And she has already worked with Joe Johnston so she knows what to expect of the movie.

  5. what i get from her comments is ” I'm too lazy and unprofessional to want to commit to a franchise that would consistently pay me for consistent work”..she's either throwing b.s. or she's actually planning ahead-something she said she can't do.

  6. Blogging on a website and acting in a film are TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS.
only one keeps paying you when your done, because of the contract.
Do you think Johnny Depp goes ” oh I'm going to do a sequel to this flick because they like me”..no man, he did two sequels to 1 film because the first pirate flick made a SHITLOAD TON OF MONEY not including DVD,TV,INTERNET,STORES etc..So to turn down Marvel who has got booku backing of DISNEY-is stupid. its that simple. Marvel has made quality product thus far-and will make more quality product in the future..to think that they would want to fail is stupid as well..

  7. its also about how she is as an actress as well as atitude..she could be a c***..its that simple. If i run a billion dollar business and i offer you an amount of “guaranteed money” per film in a 4-5 film deal-not including amounts that you will get with the distribution etc..and you turn it down-well it just proves that you aren't the quality material that i wanted and move on to the next one…Marvel hasn't screwed up anything-they just know what they want when they want it.

    • Eh, okay. Seems you are disappointed or annoyed that she didn’t sign up? What if the answer is that she just doesn’t feel like it is the right choice for her at this time? She has plenty of options, obviously. Everyone always have the option to do what feels right, though some might be drawn to what earns a lot of money and/or what feels safe. Dunno, just saying.

  8. I never said they want to fail.

  9. Scarlett Witch, X-Verse reboot. Or at least a continuation in a timeline where X-3 never happened…. oh, how we dream…

  10. It seems like this little thread is missing the clear fact that Emily Blunt is not appearing in Captain America, because her husband missed out on the lead.

Of course, she is going to state some “PC” reasons, but let's not kid ourselves. If Krasinski was Captain America, she'd be in. He's not, and neither is she.

More on point, how many bad casting decisions has Marvel made thus far? Apart from Emily Blunt, when have they had to settle for their 2nd choice, due to the 9 picture contract?

  11. Precisely my good fellow!

And to your point about Blunt, also true – I allude to that in the article :)

  12. Yeappers.

The only thing I'll add is that I think the contract was for more than 2 movies. It allowed for sequels as well.

  13. I thought that Emily Blunt would make a great Wasp back when I first read the news that she'd turned down the role of Peggy Carter. Maybe that will still happen?

  14. Scarlet Witch. Avengers or X-Men.

  15. Wow, this is a long thread. At least it's more civil than the one about the third The Last Airbender trailer.

I'm with you on what is probably Blunt's ACTUAL reasons for turning it down. Then again, I partly wonder if she was only considering it because Krasinski was auditioning for Cap.

Either way, you're right: casting has been relatively sold thus far with the films. I think Thor and Cap are going to be the big tests, though, since the leads–while somewhat recognizable–aren't yet established names.

  16. who cares about her, I dont see why this is such a big deal. Shes a nobody and she is also a fool for not taking on the roles imo

  17. I´m not familiar with the comic books. Who´s Peggy Carter? Is she somehow related to that SHIELD agent Sharen Carter?

  18. Compare the image at the top of the page to this one:

Anyone else think she'd be a good fit?

  19. Yeah there is a lot of similarities there. I could see it.

  20. what the hell are you talking about hah?

  21. I think emily blunt made a mistake turning down the role in the first avenger: captain america.

  22. I really think emily blunt made a terrible mistake. Why would se do that to herself. The first avenger: captain america could have gave her more fame, than she already has. Well, she still has the wolfman. Lets hope she doesn’t turn down a role in the wolfman sequels.
