Philip K. Dick’s Amazon anthology series Electric Dreams has just found itself two more leading ladies to join the production. Janelle Monae and Juno Temple will both star in one episode of the show’s upcoming premiere season, which is scheduled to air sometime later this year.

Focussing on several of Dick’s short stories, Electric Dreams is expected to continue the acclaimed author’s sci-fi legacy with a seemingly Black Mirror vibe and each episode being its own story. Streaming on Amazon and also airing on Channel 4 in the UK, Monae and Temple join other announced castmembers like Greg Kinnear and Steve Buscemi, while Vera Farmiga and Anna Paquin now have some more company from the fairer sex.  This is by no means the first adaptation of Dick’s work from page to screen, while films like Minority Report, Total Recall, and the two Blade Runner films are some of sci-fi’s best-known outings.

The Wrap reports that both actresses will appear in the episode “Autofac,” which follows a world where the human race lies in tatters. First written in 1955, the short story Autofac was featured in Dick’s collection Robots, Androids, and Mechanical Oddities from 1984. Following a great war, the remnants of society are oppressed by a network of robots known as autofacs, while a band of rebels plans an uprising. As the robots consume the planet’s resources, it is up to the humans to bring the power back to them and return to the world they once had.

Monae will play Alexis, an Autofac representative, while Temple will play a rebel known as Emily. It is revealed that Mad Men‘s Jay Paulson and Revolution‘s David Lyons will also star, but failed to disclose their parts. Little else is known, other than Pacific Rim‘s co-writer Travis Beacham will pen the script and it will be directed by Grey’s Anatomy‘s Travis Beacham.

Given the already superstar credentials of the cast, Monae and Temple will fit right in with the feel of the series. Best-known for starting her career as a singer, Monae is still relatively new to the screen; however, that being said, she has starred in Stargate Universe, Moonlight, and Hidden Figures. Temple’s acting credentials are a little broader, starting in the likes of St. Trinians and moving onto blockbusters like The Dark Knight Rises and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Production is well underway for Electric Dreams, and we already know that the first episode will star Timothy Spall and Anne Reid. Although it isn’t the first (or last) we have heard of Dick’s work, to lovingly give it an anthology show on TV promises to be something spectacular. Given the source material, the attached crew behind the scenes, and the A-list cast, it could be one of the most exciting televisual events of the 21st Century.
