Edward Norton Batman 3 Edward Norton Wants To Be Evil in Batman 3

Batman 3 news is hard to come by these days. Very little is known about the highly-anticipated film, besides who’s directing, writing, and starring—Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer and Jonathon Nolan, and Christian Bale, respectively. In fact, the last bit of official “news” regarding the sequel to The Dark Knight was less news and more a confirmation of what—or who—we wouldn’t be seeing in the film: The Joker.

Recently, Edward Norton was discussing his much ballyhooed departure from an altogether different superhero role and property (the Incredible Hulk in Marvel’s The Avengers), when the topic switched to Batman 3 – and Norton’s interest in the franchise.

About the Hulk, Norton said:

“It was a great privilege to do it, and I couldn’t be more appreciative of everybody’s support and positivity towards that because I love those films too. And I hate it when they miss. I hate it when they miss on one – it seems like such a wasted opportunity. But the truth is I’m probably more naturally interested in doing something that I haven’t done. I have only good thoughts towards that though.”

In the interest of avoiding another rehash of the  three-month-old controversy, allow me to briefly summarize what he’s saying: Bygones, thanks for all the support, peace, love, etc.

The more interesting tidbit, and the reason we’re all here – regarding Batman 3, Norton said:

“Chris Nolan’s making the best [comic book films] out there by far. I’d do one with him. He’s set a new bar for sure, and I think he’s done a great, great job. [Playing a villain] would be fun, I would not say no to that.”

When pushed about whether or not he’d be interested in playing the Riddler, Edward Norton indicated in the affirmative.

Rumors regarding the Riddler’s role as the big bad in Batman 3 have been popping-up for months now. In fact, those very rumors placed Joseph Gordon-Levitt, co-star of Christopher Nolan’s most recent film, Inception, at the top of the director’s list for the role previously portrayed by funnyman Jim Carrey (and Frank Gorshin in the Batman TV series). Then again, there were also rumors that Johnny Depp or Dane Cook would play the Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman or Bob Hoskins would play the Penguin, and Angelina Jolie or Sienna Miller would play Catwoman. The point being, never trust a rumor, especially when it comes to Nolan’s Batman movies.

What do you think? Would you rather see the Riddler played by Edward Norton or Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Or maybe you’d rather not see the Riddler in the film at all? Personally, I’d prefer Gordon-Levitt, as he’d have a much easier time disappearing in the role than the instantly recognizable Norton. But honestly, any choice is better than Dane Cook.

  1. I want David Tennant as the Riddler….

  2. I always liked the idea of Michael C. Hall portraying as Nolan’s Riddler.

    • When I first read that, I was like nahhhh.. But the more I think about it, I think I really would actually enjoy seeing Michael C. Hall up there. That could be really cool.

  3. Gotta be David Tennant!

    • Yay! Another one on the Tennant for The Riddler Bandwagon!

      • You can add me that list too.

    • Same, although in my eyes whoever Nolan picks will end up being perfect since he somehow knows who will be perfect for the role. Whoever thought that Robin Williams would make a scary serial killer in Insomnia?

      • Same here, add me to the list. but Norton would be cool too

  4. Levitt would be awesome.

  5. Norton would be the perfect fit to play the riddler

  6. To quote Ed Norton,

“Chris Nolan’s making the best [comic book films] out there by far. I’d do one with him. He’s set a new bar for sure, and I think he’s done a great, great job. [Playing a villain] would be fun, I would not say no to that.”

Ed hits the nail right on the head with that statement. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in any role Chris Nolan puts him in.

MARVEL’S stupid loss of such a pedigree actor is definitely DC’s gain.

  7. Levitt or Norton would be a fine either way to me. Just not Depp.

  8. no riddler please, penguin yes please.

    • No Penguin, Batman Returns scarred any hopes of me wanting to see the Penguin unless its Mark Hamill as a serial killer with a long nose and dresses in a Tux. That would be a cool penquin.

  9. Levitt or Norton would be grat in the role… I lean towards Levitt. BUT, I’m still holding out hope the the baddie in the next film will be Hush. I’d rather see him than either Penguin or Riddler. Too bad that Nolan’s real world take wouldn’t leave room for Solomon Grundy as well.

  10. David Tennant FTW he was great in HP4 im sure hell be the PERFECT Riddler!

  11. I don’t mind Norton throwing his hat into the ring. However, let’s not rule out other Bat-foes other than Riddler. After all, if Norton means what he head, and he’s not offered The Riddler but say, Maxie Zeus, Black Mask or Hush…well he say forget it?

    • don’t mind Norton throwing his hat into the ring. However, let’s not rule out other Bat-foes other than Riddler. After all, if Norton means what he said, and he’s not offered The Riddler but say, Maxie Zeus, Black Mask or Hush…well he say forget it?

There have been, in the last two films, more than one Bat-villain. There have been up to four, in fact, if you include Mob Bosses.

    • Yeah, he said he’d take a villain role if offered. He never indicated he’d ONLY take the role if it were the Riddler.

  12. I actually hopes it’s not The Riddler. I want it to be Black Mask. I really wanted Harley Quinn, but since The Joker isn’t coming, then I see no point in bringing her in.

    • totally agree with what you said about Harley.
at the very beginning i wanted a villain that hadn’t been seen in movie format before but the temptation of levitt, norton or tennant playing the riddler is just too interesting to pass up

  13. I think Ed Norton would be better as the Riddler. I have loved Joseph Gordon Levitt since his days in 3rd Rock from the Sun, but I just don’t know if he has that necessary craziness in him. Ed Norton, however, totally does.

  14. No to Norton in being in any movie. I want Poison Ivy!

  15. I think harley can continue jokers ways in batman 3….maybe she was inspired by the joker? IDK

    • NO ricky, sorry man

    • I don’t want Nolan to just have introduced as if she was hiding in the background during TDK, and just showed up to get revenge for The Joker. I want to see her get seduced by The Joker, and become a criminal. That would be great to see on screen.

      • i agree matt, it really would work any other way

        • To be honest, I’m starting to think it would just be a re-hash of The Joker bringing down Harvey Dent in TDK. The Joker basically seduced him to become a criminal in that scene.

  16. A different suggestion, since Nolan is one of those directors that uses the same actors he works with, how about Tom Hardy? He played a good villain in Star Trek Nemesis (even though the character itself could have used some work).

    • I could see Hardy making a credible and intimidating Hush.

    • He’s my pick for Hush.

  17. Norton as the riddler? I could see that… But yould know its him and yould have a hard time believing any of it…

That being said, I had a hard time believing that Heath Ledger would do a good Joker…

So finally… Anything that nolan does will probly be awesome…

  18. Anthony

Yes i know im just saying it IS possible harley can be villian but the possiblitys are low :(

    • not without the Joker

      • Harley CAN be the villian AND the axis of the storyline as Joker was in TDK and Ra’s was in BB: you never “see” the Joker–he is incarcerated in Arkham, where Harley works and is thus manipulated by him. You could get “glimpses” of him (JGL), through a window, in a straight-jacket and have a voice-over done by another voice-actor…

  19. Sam Rockwell still seems like a good choice for Riddler to me.

    • Oh man! Sam Rockwell as anything would be sweet!
But… he was in Iron Man 2… would that matter?

      • It wouldn’t to me. DC’s universe and Marvel’s universe aren’t gonna be joining, so there’s no real reason why it should be a problem.

      • Ryan Reynolds has played (3) different heroes. It shouldn’t matter. :)

    • Jason, im not too familiar with him, i think he was in The Green Mile?

  20. Lots of ambivalence for me here but I need Riddler to be an older character to be believable… no boyish sorts and when it comes to the stretchy pants… lets just not go there….

  21. The problem with Levitt is that he looks a lot like Ledger, who played the Joker. Norton would be a good choice. Either actor could do it and be great as the Riddler. BTW, Nolan has said there will be no Joker, Two-Face, or Penguin in the movie. I wish people would stop suggesting them because it’s not going to happen. Talia Al Ghul would be a great villain and they could use her to connect the movie to Batman Begins, instead of straying away from the original story.

    • I really have liked the Talia idea since it was being thrown around (even BEFORE TDK was released…)

I DO know one thing though:
Whatever Nolan pulls out, it’s going to be amazing.

  22. Personally im leaning towards BLACK MASK & HUSH…and now that Rachael Dawes got axed, an appearance by Selina Kyle is a must.

Plus, adding Norton to any DC film is like a big fat subliminal F-U to those morons at marvel, haha love it if it actually happens.

  23. I had rather the Riddler NOT be the focal point of the movie; the axis NEEDS to be HARLEY QUINN. Let me explain: Nolan said that Batman3 “…will end the story.” Then–1. use Harley as Joker’s pawn, with the roques of Arkham executing the anarchy dirty work; and 2. use Talia Al Ghul as the love interest and anti-hero for Batman assisting him as a fulfillment, in the proper method, to her (late) father. Black Mask, Riddler and whatever or how-many-ever villians you wish could be used make the story–Batman cleans up Gotham: BATMAN TRIUMPHANT.

  24. Norton for the Riddler is perfect. Nobody wants to see a David Tennant VS Christian Bale movie. If u ask me I think that’s just STUPID! I wanna see a Ed Norton and Christian Bale. Norton is sophisticated and that’s the Riddler’s personality. An intelligent individual.

Joseph Gordon Levitt is a very good actor, but that’s just not his role. He can’t fit the shoes like Norton. If there is a Riddler. Give it to Norton!
After what Marvel did to him, DC needs to give this guy a chance.

    • @” Nobody wants to see a David Tennant VS Christian Bale movie. If u ask me I think that’s just STUPID! I wanna see a Ed Norton and Christian Bale. Norton is sophisticated and that’s the Riddler’s personality. An intelligent individual.”

Nobody? Well, there’s four people (including me) on this thread that want to see that, and then there’s an entire fanbase out there too. If you don’t think Tennant isn’t “an intelligent individual”, then you obviously haven’t seen him in Doctor Who. Any actor came be play an intelligent character. That’s why it’s called “ACTING”.

      • @ Matt

David Tennant was brillant as Doctor Who. He’s my favorite Doctor Who.

I don’t think some people are overly familiar with David Tennant’s work before Doctor Who. He is a versatile actor.

        • David was also my favorite Doctor. He really made me believe he WAS the Doctor!! While Matt Smith was OK, he was a pale imitation of David Tennant.

    • Ed Norton doesn’t need for DC to give him a chance. He already is an established and highly distinguised actor regardless of whether he gets a movie role through MARVEL, DC/WB or any other major studio.

But you’re right in the sense that MARVEL stuffed up big time by not allowing him to reprise his role as the Hulk. It’s MARVEL’S loss.

      • The above reply is meant for E.A.R.T.H and not for Matt K.

Don’t know why it appeared it the wrong place. :-)

  25. Paul Giamotti as the Ventriloquist. You’re welcome.

  26. If he plays the Riddler than awesome. If Levitt gets the part than awesome. If Levitt gets the part and Norton gets Black Mask than also awesome. Black Mask would fit pretty well in the Nolan universe and since Robin may be brought in than he could be a villain robin can face (kinda like in Under the Red Hood).

    • Robin won’t be coming in Batman 3. Dick Grayson may cameo, but he won’t become Robin. Nolan has stated many times that he won’t include Robin in his films, and there’s no way WB would force it upon him either.

      • He may not become Robin, but whose to say that Dick Grayson doesn’t don a different pesona. Say the Red Hood. Just a theory. A theory that would look pretty epic onscreen. Plus with that Batman will finally have a person that can fight him face to face like Rahs Al Ghul. And they can place Black Mask and his men responsible for Grayson’s parent’s death. That would make the movie interesting.

Now how Riddler could fit into the film if that was included I can say later. I’m goin to bed.

  27. norton norton norton

  28. Joseph Gordon Levit for Riddler!

  29. I think Edward Norton would do a great job of playing the Riddler. He is a fantastic actor who has done some great films such as Fight Club.
