In a recent interview with Box Office Magazine, fan-favorite director Edgar Wright talked about his progress on the script for Marvel’s Ant-Man and his overall goal for the film.

Wright explained that he hasn’t written a second draft of the script yet, but that he’ll get started on it after his current film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World comes out. Wright then went on to explain that the Ant-Man will be a “high-concept” but funny genre film.

“What we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.”

Wright also touched on Scott Pilgrim and why he opted not to include cameos for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (his close friends and the stars of his popular films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.) To learn more, check out the full interview when it comes out in Box Office Magazine.

I appreciate that Wright is focused on Scott Pilgrim right now, but I can’t wait for him to get back to Ant-Man. Of all the upcoming Marvel movies, I think that Ant-Man has the best chance to do something new and exciting. For my money, there isn’t a better director in Hollywood to handle the material, and when you factor in the rumor that Nathan Fillion is “locked” for the role of Hank Pym, things just get better. (Of course, Fillion is still just a rumor.)

The thing I like the best about Wright’s movies is that they’re funny, but it’s not cheap humor. The comedy comes from smart writing, likable characters, and legitimately clever sight gags. Comparing Ant-Man‘s humor to Iron Man is a good sign and reflects an awareness on Wright’s part of Ant-Man‘s place within the greater Marvel film universe.

A couple of months ago, we speculated that Ant-Man could go into pre-production early next year with a likely release date after The Avengers. This meshes with the theory that Ant-Man will make his first appearance alongside Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor in The Avengers. It would also explain why Avengers director Joss Whedon and Edgar Wright met up in L.A. in April.

What do you think of Edgar Wright’s comments? Does his approach to the script sound like something you want to see in your Ant-Man movie?

  1. Great article. I love Edgar Wright. One of my favorite directors. Loved Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and I am super super excited for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Word. He would definitely do a good job on Ant-Man.

  2. If fillion gets official I’m in other wise I’ll wait for the trailers.

  3. I too am a fan of his works. And Fillion is a big plus, I hope it’s true. Would like a small cameo by Pegg and Frost in Ant-Man that would help with the humor of the film. Having them in it would be a hoot.

  4. I am such a huge fan of Wright’s work and Fillion’s. Edgar’s approach to this film is something I’m really excited about. He’s such a clever writer, and he’s been working with Stan Lee on this as well, so you know the in depth research is there. Adding Humor to a Super Hero story makes it more compelling and acceptable by the masses. I he writes Hank Pym as eccentric as the character was in the comic books. It’s definitely one that I will be sure to see regardless of how far after the Avengers it comes out. You just know it’s gonna be a great script once it get’s it’s final touches to it. I’m sure it’s gold now as is.

  5. What I dont understand is why he mentions this:

“His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world.”

Most of Marvel U takes place in the real world, unlike say DC. What is he saying he fashions it after the comic?? Which is a good thing… or is he saying something different?

Within reason IM has stayed true to the comics. Yes they took a few liberties hee and there but for the most part it was an updated version of the “same” story.

Why cant they all do/say this as the IM crew did? (which he may be)

  6. Nathan Fillion would be great as “Ant Man” and Stana Katic should play “The Wasp” :-)

  7. “Stana Katic should play “The Wasp”

I approve and agree with this message. :)

  8. Megan Fox for Wasp!!!!!

    im kidding…

    • haha! NOOOOOOOOO!!!

  9. Great! I hope he does a phenomenal job and I actually hope that it turns out to be better than Iron Man. Lets be honest here, not only is it that Ant-Man is a B-C character amongst comic book readers, but he is mostly unknown amongst non comic book readers or fan boys and also mostly disliked by most who DO know of him. Only certain fans have a certain respect and love of this character Hank Pym aka Ant-Man aka Giant-Man aka Yellow Jacket etc. etc., Most people when they here of this idea they’re like meh, or super hero that shrinks! Comon’! So he’s sort of doomed from the start. Edgar Wright has to make this a phenomenal movie. Not only cleverly funny but also play on Hank Pym’s flawed personality and low self esteem and make him redeemable, but loved even though he’s flawed and to love that fact that he’s flawed, grounded and realistic. There’s no room for Scott Lang just yet and that first draft about Hank Pym in the 60′s needs to be thrown away though.

    • @ ulik

You hit the nail right on the head. I’ve always liked Hank Pym aka Ant-Man aka Giant-Man aka Goliath aka Yellow Jacket.

      • Dont forget to add Spouse Abuser, traitor and (i think) substance abuser to that list… :D

Is it confirmed it is Pym? Sorry I dont see Pym being an outright “funny” guy.

Scott Lang and Eric O’Grady fit that bill IMO a little better.

  10. Just a few things about the misunderstanding or cheesyness people think of Ant-Man. 1)There are literally over 10 quintrillion(real number)different species of insects in the world not including those that haven’t been discovered yet. If one day insects decided to take over, it would be over. To be able to control all insects not just ants is one of the most powerful abilities that get slept on. 2) Hank Pym is the second most intelligent superhero/scientist in the Marvel U just below Reed Richards but Hank Pym isn’t all squeaky clean and square & nerdy like Reed. 3) Through Pym’s discovery of sub-atomic particles that he calls Pym particles,he is able to decrease his size to that of a fraction of a centimeter or smaller, easily going undetected for stealth reasons and being able to intrude and enter orifices that would seem impenetrable.4) While Ant-Man decreases his over all mass, he increases his density making him incredibly more durable while also maintaining the same strength of his normal size not unlike ants that can lift objects from 3-10 times their size and weight. 5)Ant-Man’ suit also allows him to move at speeds equivalent to that of some of the fastest insects. As I’ve said in other posts, Ant-Man still needs an upgrade. If they make him “A.N.T-Man”. “A.N.T-Man”(Animated.Nano.Technology) then the possibilities are endless such as creating artificial nano-ants or bugs that are impervious to fire and have different abilities. I’m looking forward to seeing Hank Pym as Ant-Man the movie with Wasp and I’m looking forward to seeing Hank Pym as G.I.A.N.T-Man(Growth.Increasing.Anatomical.Neo.Technology) in The Avengers.

  11. Never even heard of Ant Man!

    • You may know him better as Yellow Jacket or Giantman?

  12. I think Emily Blunt would make a good Wasp, but there are plenty of actresses that could fill that role.

There is only one actor that can play Ant-Man, and we all know who that is…

  13. Wow Rogue you really are perhapse the most crude poster I have ever seen. Your like an over grown rebel teen. Be as crude as you can to fight the power.
