Edward Norton Bourne Legacy Ed Norton in Negotiations to Play Villain in Bourne Legacy

It’s official: Hawkeye is taking on the Hulk -sort of.

It looks like Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers film) and Ed Norton (formerly The Incredible Hulk) will be squaring off soon in Tony Gilroy’s upcoming film, The Bourne Legacy. According to reports, Norton is currently in negotiations to join The Bourne Legacy as a villain.

It’s unclear what villainous role Norton will play in the latest addition to the Bourne movie franchise, but the previous films give us some clues. We know that Jeremy Renner is playing Martin, an agent similar to Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne, who is on the run from the government. Therefore, if he’s the hero, it’s likely that Norton will play a government agent or corrupt official chasing Martin – or perhaps a fellow operative sent to track him down (a la Clive Owen in The Bourne Identity).

This news, which comes via The Hollywood Reporter, should come as a pleasant surprise to the many fans of the Bourne franchise, as well as the critics who thought that taking the series in a new direction without Damon and director Paul Greengrass was a bad idea. While Norton has been criticized over the years for being somewhat difficult on set, there’s no denying the actor is extremely talented. Pairing him opposite another Academy Award nominee (Jeremy Renner) should definitely create some intense scenes and help Bourne Legacy distinguish itself from the other (all excellent) Bourne films.

Though it’s still in the early stages, The Bourne Legacy is shaping up to be a pretty exciting film. With Renner in the lead, Norton signing on as a bad guy, and the lovely and talented Rachel Weisz cast as the obligatory love interest, the film is certainly not hurting for talent. Likewise, while he may not have the action chops of Greengrass, Tony Gilroy has written all of the previous Bourne films and was nominated for an Academy Award for the excellent 2007 film Michael Clayton.

What do you think of Ed Norton joining The Bourne Identity? Even though it’s not an epic Marvel throwdown, do you think Norton vs. Renner will make for a compelling new addition to the Bourne franchise?

  1. Variety was the site that reported it and it’s unclear what role Rachel Weisz has other than the female lead.

  2. I’m interested to see how this one turns out, regardless if Norton ends up in the role or not. I’m curious to see if they can even really DO this movie without Damon. Can they really pull off the “bourne universe” and make tons of movie set within the world the writer (forget his name, don’t burn me) created? In my mind what made this series so interesting was the character bourne, his amnesia, his ability to do miraculous things without really knowing how he does them. Now… meh. It’s like the story is over, Ultimatum really wrapped things up nicely. I hope this film does well, but I won’t be miffed if it just simply doesn’t have that original quality about it that made the rest of the series so superb.

    • The previous films contained numerous ‘Jason Bournes’ but only 1 David Webb. Each asset that was activated to kill Bourne(Webb) came from the same program that produced carbon-copy assasins. Damon’s Bourne was a malfunctioning unit the moment he looked into the eyes of his target’s little girl (and the amnesia didn’t help either).

So the title ‘Bourne Legacy’ leaves room for more malfunctioning units with out the original Jason Bourne needed in the film. Not my personal preference but I can see what they’re trying to do.

In a few years, if Damon’s interested, he would be the right age for a book-based ‘Legacy’ film. That would be intriguing.

      • Only thing is, they never said exactly that the others were “Jason Bournes”; they were just other assassins from the Treadstone/Blackbriar project. David Webb was the only one that had the name “Jason Bourne”.

I think a better option would be to start off where the last movie ended and focus on the assassin that almost shoots him on the roof but hesitates when Bourne asks him if he knows why he was targeting Bourne.

        • Um, yeah. I knew that. Jason Bourne was an alias… all those guys had aliases and that’s what I meant by ” other ‘Jason Bournes’ “. ‘Brothers’ from the same ‘Mother’, as it were….

… never mind… Someone’s probably going to say, “Hold on! They weren’t related in any way whatsoever!!”

          • I gotcha. My bad.

  3. Ed Norton: shaved = good guy. bearded = bad guy.

  4. sorry but I’m still pissed off they couldn’t come to a meeting of the minds on having Norton reprise his role as Bruce banner!

    • yeah I like Ruffalo, but I don’t think he will do the role as much justice as Norton did.

I wonder if Hulk standalone films with Ruffalo in the lead are coming after Avengers.

  5. Ed as another bad guy….shocking

  6. Jsut a typo I believe “What do you think of Ed Norton joining The Bourne Identity?”

As for the film its a niche (not like Bond, more like Pirates) that when you see someone else in it (unless it is a reboot Batman, Spiderman) and as such it may have me thinking more how it would be if Damon was still in it and taint the over all expierence. (for me)

Will probably wait for the DVD/Netflix.

  7. I would like to know where edward norton got the time machine to do The Bourne Identity…unless they are remaking it? I’m confused.

I also like Aknot’s typo while complaining about a typo.

AKNOT JSUT wanted to fit in 😀

    • How can it be confusing? He isn’t in Bourne Identity. It’s the fourth movie called The Bourne Legacy. The book series was picked up after Ludlum’s death by Eric van Lustbader and Legacy was the first book he wrote which was a sequel to Ultimatum. Of course, though, it sounds like this movie will be the Bourne Legacy in name only.

      • @Frank yeah I saw that after I hit enter… 😀

@Tom if you read the write p it says at the end:

“What do you think of Ed Norton joining The Bourne Identity? Even though it’s not an epic Marvel throwdown, do you think Norton vs. Renner will make for a compelling new addition to the Bourne franchise?”

Jsut a typo I pointed out.

        • @Aknot Lol sorry. My bad. Didn’t see that part.

  8. Sweet! Edward Norton and Jeremy Renner could be in a movie together, that would be awesome!

  9. Edward Nortron is a great actor.

I wish he would had return as Bruce Banner in The Avengers because he was great in the role and contuity would had been good.

Besides, Norton up against Jeremy Renner, that would be a great fight in the Bourne Legacy movie and a great additon to the film.

  10. Man wtf. I want Matt Damon in this one!

  11. Don’t see the point of this film. But keeping Greengrass away from the franchise sounds like a good plan to me.

  12. How can you have a Bourne movie Without Jason Bourne??????????
