Summit Entertainment has unleashed a clip and two new images from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the latest chapter in the blockbuster film series based on the novels written by Stephanie Meyers.

Eclipse picks up shortly after the events of the previous Twilight flick – New Moon – and involves a series of grisly murders being committed in the city of Seattle.  These murders are but part of a larger plan that threatens not only the lives of Bella, Edward, and Jacob but also the tentative peace struck between the vampires and werewolves.

In the clip below, the head honchos of the vampires – the Volturi – arrive in Seattle to investigate the violent acts being committed there, concerned that they may draw unwanted attention to their blood-sucking clan.

Just have a look for yourselves:

Although this scene plays out less creepy and more hokey for me personally, I admit that Dakota Fanning (as the Volturi leader) does exude a certain, understated sense of menace fairly well.  This clip, in combination with the final Eclipse trailer, suggests that director David Slade (30 Days of Night) has crafted an overall darker Twilight film in terms of atmosphere and narrative.

Well, at least parts of 'Eclipse' should be darker.

Those concerned that the plot of Eclipse will be driven primarily by stylized action sequences instead of the quieter moments between characters (especially Bella and Jacob) need not fret.  As these latest images from the film illustrate, there will be plenty of scenes focusing on brooding teenagers and repressed desire – just like in the first two Twilight films.

So, are all you Twilight-lovers out there as excited for Eclipse as ever?

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be released in regular and IMAX theaters this summer on June 30.
