One of the films of the last decade that holds up extremely well upon repeat viewings is David Cronenberg’s violent crime film, Eastern Promises, starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. I have to admit I didn’t absolutely love it the first time I watched it but upon watching it again on DVD I thought, “Wow.”

But as much as I’ve grown to like Eastern Promises, it isn’t the first film I’d think of to give a sequel to. However, we learned last year that Cronenberg and the rest of the key players were interested in and were moving forward with a sequel.

Now we have an update to story almost a year to the day later: Producer of the first Eastern Promises, Paul Webster, is a busy man right now and in a story over at Deadline it’s revealed that he is officially lining up Eastern Promises 2. Great news for fans of the first is that Viggo Mortensen reportedly will be reprising his role as the bad-ass Nikolai, the Russian gangster who [SPOILER ALERT!!!] turned out to be working undercover for the police.

Unsurprisingly since Mortensen will likely return, so will Cronenberg who will again be working from script written by Steven Knight. The whole gang is back… well, apart from Naomi Watts who we’re not sure is returning or not. It could go either way as far as Watts coming back to reprise her role as Anna – her story was wrapped up well in the first one so I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t return. But I also wouldn’t be surprised she came back and Knight has cooked up another storyline to involve her again with Mortensen’s Nikolai.

As the title of this article suggests, it’s looking like Eastern Promises 2 will start shooting this Fall. But first Cronenberg and Mortensen are scheduled to work together again by shooting the Sigmund Freud biopic, The Talking Cure, this summer (FYI, Mortensen replaced Christoph Waltz in that role). After the first Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, The Talking Cure and now Eastern Promises 2, the director-actor duo have really formed a great working relationship.

Are you glad to see things gearing up on the Eastern Promises 2 front? What sort of story would you like it to have?

As stated, Eastern Promises to will likely start shooting this Fall and you can expect a 2011 release.

  1. Hope it's as good as the first one!!!

  2. It should be interesting to see what turn the story takes. Will Nikolai concern himself with the complete dismantling of the vor v zakone, or possibly simply taking to establish or maintain his position? I am really looking forward to this film!

  3. AWESOME NEWS!! When “Eastern Promises” ended, all I wanted was to see what Nickolai would do now that he had “stars above his heart.” This is the best sequel idea in years.

  4. Can't wait.

  5. WOW awesome news, can’t wait already =)

    Greetings J

  6. Any updates on this????? cant wait

  7. In general, all sequels are a bad idea. In fact, the only sequel I can think of that works (and perhaps even surpasses) the original is Aliens.

That said, it does feel like there’s more story to tell here and if anyone can do it, it’s Cronenberg. The bath house knife fight is still the most intense fight scene ever committed to celluloid.

    • Aliens is the only one you can think of really? Empires Strikes Back, Godfather 2, Terminator 2, The Dark Knight, Wrath Of Khan, LoTR The Two Towers, Spider Man 2, X2. And those are just the mainstream ones.

I really don’t get the stigma sequels carry when there’s plenty of good ones.

  8. Its a damn good film and I enjoyed every minute…great storyline! I actually bought the 1st EP in a gas station in wisconsin years ago..lets get the show on the road gents! Im ready for EP 2!

  9. I think the only logical direction is to watch as Nikolai gets deeper into the Russian Mob. The stakes are higher there are people who know he’s not all bad and everyone is always a bit learn about a new boss.

  10. This movie has a dark theme, so lets keep that going in the sequel. Nikolai should get exposed in the end and should get killed in a horrible way. But before all that happens we need to see more activity involving the Russian Mob. Show how organized and secretive they are compared to the Italian mobs. More action gents!! Oh and for the love of God kill off the gay mobster.

    • Totally agree! More action. Not too sure about nokolai dying though.

    • I agree, if the writer/director can’t figure a way for Viggo Mortensen’s character “Nikolai” to redeem himself, in the sequel, to atone for all the bad things he has done… Well, than Nikolai will HAVE to die… It’s simply the nature of film plot; or so I’ve been told… Though, I’d rather see Nikolai live, and hook up with Naomi Watts’ character at the very end of the film; as if Nikolai had remained in contact with Naomi Watts’ character Anna. Now, how to weave this idea into EP2 without it wreaking of limburger. Personally, if this idea were executed just right I believe the hookup would make for a nice happy ending to a set of dark-ish films.
