Dwayne Johnson has been keeping himself busy as of late. After revitalizing both the G.I. Joe and Fast & Furious franchises in short order, the former wrestler has recently wrapped production on Brett Ratner’s sword and sandal epic Hercules, and is currently filming James Wan’s Fast & Furious 7.

Clearly not one to rest on his laurels, it’s being reported that the veteran action star has signed on to headline and produce MGM’s SEAL Team 666. Based on the book by Westen Ochse and penned by Hercules scribe Evan Spiliotopoulos, the film will follow a team of highly trained Navy Seals who specialize in hunting and eliminating supernatural forces. Johnson’s former assistant Hiram Garcia is confirmed to produce the pic alongside alongside Brendan Deneen, Dany Garcia and Peter Joseph, but no director has been attached yet. Check out the synopsis for the 2012 novel below:

Halfway through SEAL training, Cadet Jack Walker, still green but showing incredible promise, is whisked away to join four SEALs and their dog for a special ops mission. Walker soon finds himself in a whirlwind of otherworldly creatures and events as he discovers the true nature of SEAL Team 666. Battling demons, possessed humans, mass-murdering cults, and evil in its darkest and most and ancient form, the members of SEAL Team 666 have their work cut out for them. And it’s not long before they realize that the threat isn’t directed against the US alone — an ancient and deadly cult has far bigger plans, and Walker is at the center of a supernatural conflict in which the entire world is at stake.

This year more than ever, Johnson has taken it upon himself to develop his acting repertoire; Snitch saw him give a surprisingly understated performance, and he was the most likable thing in Michael Bay’s divisive film, Pain & Gain. Seal Team 666 is more in keeping with the actor’s natural abilities – he’s played a convincing military man a few times in his career – and it’s easy to see him excelling here.

An action star of Johnson’s caliber will no doubt receive numerous testosterone-fuelled scripts, so the fact that Johnson has chosen this project as his next action flick is suggests that there is something sufficiently different at play here. If nothing else, the supernatural represents a new enemy type for the actor. We’ll have to wait a while to find out whether or not that element of the story will be enough to distinguish it from similar fare – namely R.I.P.D., a film which tried to mix the world of police procedurals with the supernatural, to disastrous results.

  1. At first I thought it was a Hollywood biopic until I saw the extra 6′s and now I think this project is just silly..it could be worse or better than R.I.P.D. but I have low expectations.

    • Surely it cant be worse than R.I.P.D? that film was so bad, CGI, script, characters, they just screwed up lock stock the fu*king lot!

      • when the rock rockbottoms the devil then the devil just lays their for the peoples elbow you will change your mind

        • Very well said A+

        • Know Your Role Blvd. and Jabroni Dr.

          • Sounds like a decent movie, not for only roodie-poo viewers!

      • I thought the R.I.P.D trailer was alright ..despite its crappy CGI ..because it was made on a modest budget..however I fooled myself thinking that it had a chance this year .. and I will say again ..Ryan Reynolds (check his track record for comic book movies)
However ur right it could be better than R.I.P.D but I have low expectations

        • I would argue $130 isn’t a modest budget.

          • ditto.

  2. Seems like a good idea to me, Super Hero and fantasy themed movies projects will cannibalize the market in the next three to four years. Supernatural themed properties tend to have lower budgets and hereditarily are lower risk projects.

The major studios are playing with fire, there seems to be 20-25 extremely high budget properties due for release in the next 18 – 24 months.

  3. Is he the only g****** actor out there on steroids?! Get somebody new..tired of the same roid bald freaks in the same type of movie.

    • Although you could have said it better, I agree with you. Rock is like the B version of Arnold…about as good an actor, but not as big, nor as charismatic, as Arnold was in his glory days. He’ll never have films as popular or lasting Conan, Predator, and Terminator. I’m getting tired of seeing him try, over and over again.

      • Wait, wait.

First, you laughably claim Rock is on steroids, despite the fact that he’s explained why he’s been steroid free since his teen days when he thought it would help his chances of getting into football and posts videos and images of him working out like a beast fairly regularly (25 miles of squat thrusts in one session last summer while he was in England).

Then, the hilarious claim that he isn’t charismatic. Have you never seen the guy on TV or in movies before? Rock is easily one of the most charismatic people in the world of entertainment, not just on screen but off it too.

I’m an Arnold fan myself but can’t think of a movie where he’s been charismatic whatsoever. Not like Rock has.

Besides, I’d rather see Rock in movies than The Monotonous Mumbling Man himself, Vin Diesel.

        • I can’t stand Vin diesels arrogant monotone acting in every movie hes done.

  4. wtf

  5. New enemy type? He was in doom….

  6. Gerald butler for the punisher

  7. This sounds a LOT like the military team in the book ‘Age of Voodoo’ by James Lovegrove..(minus the dog.)

  8. Yeah. Also a lot similar to the Meeran’s Wall ( James Corucchio penned )ghost-fantasy graphic novel. There were military types in that team.

  9. The movie “Doom” comes to mind. Lets hope its not that lol.

    • Haha, yeah, the only decent things about that movie were Karl Urban, The Rock, Dexter Fletcher and that first person sequence.

    • i thought doom was great!

  10. Hope the rock joins my guild lol :D

  11. I with Kevin Smith on that one: take my money!

If they play it straight this could be really awesome.

  12. Make this like Aliens and I’ll throw money on them!

  13. As for action movies Blonde Squad scheduled for 2014 release looks pretty action packed. I’m looking forward to it.
