Dwayne Johnson Lobo Hercules Movie Interviews Dwayne Johnson Says Lobo Movie is Dead; Talks Hercules

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a new movie called Snitch hitting theaters soon, and while doing his promotional tour for the film he dropped some new updates on Warner Bros.’ adaptation of DC Comics’ intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, as well as his upcoming stint as the titular Greek hero of Brett Ratner’s Hercules film adaptation of the Thracian Wars comic book series.

Lobo is a character who’s experienced a lot of starts and stops on his way to the big screen. Back in 2009 it was announced that Guy Ritchie would direct the movie – until Ritchie dropped out in order to helm Sherlock Holmes 2 instead. The project lay dormant until summer 2012, when Dwayne Johnson announced that he was indeed attached to the headlining role of a Lobo movie being developed by super-producer Joel Silver (The Matrix) and Journey 2 director Brad Peyton. That set off all kinds of fan buzz (including whether Johnson’s Lobo would appear in a Justice League movie) – but at the very least, the casting seemed like a great match.

Well, Johnson spoke with MTV recently, and let it be known that the window of opportunity for Lobo has passed:

“It was [there] for a minute, but then it kind of just went away. As things happen in Hollywood sometime. For a minute I was interested in it (Lobo), then it went away.”

This evaporation of potential superhero films is a growing trend for DC/WB: In the late 2000s, the Justice League movie by Mad Max director George Miller died in the stages of pre-production; it now seems that the Justice League movie by Gangster Squad writer Will Beall could be facing a similar fate. In 2006, Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns failed to relaunch that character in the new millenium – a challenge now resting on Zack Snyder’s Man of SteelGreen Lantern was a non-starter in 2011, while countless other potential character films - The Flash, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Aquaman, Deadman – have all sputtered along without gaining much traction.

In short: if you aren’t talking about Batman and/or Chris Nolan, DC superheroes have not had any strong movie franchises since this century began. We can now add Lobo to that pile of bodies. Will the film get another look? For the foreseeable future it seems like Batman and Superman are the two heroes we’ll be seeing.

  1. Bah, video unavailable in my area.

Anyway, seems like Rock’s still extremely busy even without Lobo becoming a reality. It’s a shame it’s canned but hey, what can you do? Always another opportunity once DC and WB figure out their movie universe together and have a few successes.

    • Very disappointing that there not planning on making a movie about Lobo! I had this comic book series and I loved it I still have it to this day! But you Hollywood you suck with your long stupid delays over and over again! Holy buckets get with the picture already!! I’m worried about the future of TV and movies now suckers!

  2. Concerning DCs film track record and this Lobo news, I guess its safe to assume that films like Suicide Squad, Metal Men and Justice League Dark are pretty much done with too. WB/DC seriously need to get their crap together. But I’m afraid by the time that happens, comic book movies might not be as big to the public as they are now.

  3. YES!! YES!! YES!!

This is Great news! I’m glad the Lobo movie is no more. Rock would be a good choice for the role but the character and story IMHO wouldn’t be well represented. The story they had so far was trashy and generic. Worst of all there were talks about it being PG13? Yeah…I hope this never sees the light of day…

  4. WB should just sell the movie rights to their DC characters. At least then movies other than Batman and Superman would get made. F*ck WB.

    • Thing is, Batman and Superman are the most well known of DC’s characters and the most likely to become hits and generate more money for the studio. That’s why they’re waiting on Man Of Steel’s potential success or failure before committing to less known characters in future.

  5. Lobo? He HAS to be Luke Cage!!!!

    • Agreed a I think that would work pretty well

  6. Batman, superman, batman, superman! Gosh WB likes playing it safe don’t they? The fact is that until another studio buys all the rights to the DC Characters all we will see is Batman, superman, batman, superman

  7. Jason Momoa would have been a great Lobo. Guyliner and everything!

    • Indeed. Give him the makeup of Mr. Boogie from Sinister, and we’re good :)

    • He’s gonna be DRAX in GOTG. DC lost their chance. lol..

  8. “Most people would agree that Johnson is a fine pick to play the mythical Greek hero”

Wait, what?! The last article on this subject had a good percentage thinking it was a horrible match considering The Rock doesn’t look Greek (or Roman for that matter).

So in case you couldn’t decipher that, I think it’s a poor choice.

  9. The Rock would be PERFECT for a Sub-Mariner movie! Look at the old Gene Colan drawings and see if you don’t think he’s a dead ringer!

  10. I think this Hercules movie will be realy cool I’m a big Hercules fan myself I can understand the rocks interest in the character good luck mr. Johnson

  11. Get The Flash going, as well as Green Lantern 2. Then talk to me about other plans after that.

  12. I would like to see a Lobo movie. He’s badass. I named one of my dogs Lobo lol. But I don’t think it makes sense for him to get a movie before other names that could be much larger. Especially if JL does get the light of day.

  13. The WB is a cancer for DC. I hate how they only rely on Superman & Batman. Just give me anything else. I mean they pull the same garbage with their animated stuff. I wish another film company would buy the rights away from Warner Bros cause they really suck!

  14. Too bad. I was hoping Lobo would take off and be in the same universe as Man of Steel/JL.

  15. im starting to think WB hates its Characters lol..i love dc.. And wb just needs to give up those rights to somebody already…………………………………………disney? ;)

  16. I think lemmy kilmister would be awsome to bad he is to small.

  17. “In short: if you aren’t talking about Batman and/or Chris Nolan, DC superheroes have not had any strong movie franchises since this century began.”

And you know what, they never will.

WB/DC is flat out, unquestionable a joke.
Hey WB, if you don’t want to make superhero movies that the fans want, sell the properties.

    Again, what a joke.
