Dwayne Johnson Protection Dwayne Johnson Getting Fast and Furious?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson appears to be on a serious mission to shrug off his kid-friendly Tooth Fairy wings in favor of some hardcore action boots.

In addition to the recent announcement that Johnson would be replacing Clive Owen in the Simon West film Protection, we are now hearing word that the former WWE star could be considered for a role in the next Fast and the Furious installment - 2 Fast 2 Furious, I mean Fast Five.

According to Deadline New York, Johnson’s role would be a starring role – placing him at the center of the film’s “heroes on the run” plot.

There aren’t too many details about Fast Five as of yet – aside from the fact the plot follows “fugitives Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) who are pursued by lawmen.”

Sounds like returning director, Justin Lin, is looking to inject some serious star-power in his “lawmen” lineup.

Deadline reports, at this point, nothing is set in stone but Johnson seems drawn to fast-paced action these days – he’ll also be starring in the upcoming film Faster (another “hero on the run” action flick).

Fast and Furious may have reenergized the series but it’s still difficult to imagine how much gas the franchise has left in the tank. However, adding Johnson into the mix will certainly give Fast Five a solid jolt of nitrous – not to mention, keep the actor on the action-thriller road that suits him best.

That said, I don’t mean to sound as though I think Johnson is merely a one-note action junkie – because that spot is reserved for Vin Diesel.

Johnson actually has some versatility but I think it’s a mistake for him to do too many kid-friendly films or indie projects at a time – not without giving fans a taste of his hard-hitting action roots.

Is Johnson enough to get audiences back into driver… I mean theatre seats?

Fast Five is scheduled for a June 10, 2011 release in theatres.

  1. I don’t know that I like the idea of Dewayne being in it. Its a weird idea. He should stick to his other action stuff and leave Fast and Furious to Paul and Vin.

  2. imho, Great move to freshin up franchise.

  3. Action scenes can always be made bigger and better. That’s pretty much what this entire franchise is living off of. That being said, I still love the films. If you can look past the mediocre writing and typical plots, they’re just fun movies.

  4. I’m not a fan of the franchise, but if there was a Vin Diesel vs. The Rock fight in it . . . I would have to see the film. That would be a pretty well-rounded match, and could be borderline on epic if done right.

  5. the rock is bigger.

  6. Awesome, that’s really the only new direction this franchise could take was to throw in a big star to chase our heroes. I’m glad they did it.

  7. Yeah the rock is one of the best action stars! Its time he does movies like this again

  8. I believe he signed a contracted with Disney as they promised to work the actor as Dwayne Johnson without (“The Rock”) as he is no longer a wrestler.

This is in no way a dig or a shot at you but could you please show some respect to the individual and remove (“The Rock”) from his name and just leave it as (“Dwayne Johnson”).

As far as the decision goes with Dwayne being cast in an established franchised, this could go one of to ways good/bad and with a “name” actor if the concept of the show continues along it’s path it may be bad, however with the injection the movie must revolve and a new structure and format… which means not more cops and robbers activity… if fact the best way this movie can move forward is to eliminate law officials altogether.

I think that’s enough for now.

  9. Can’t they stop using the old skyline? I mean , they should use newer cars like the the 2009 skyline version. and please no more civics
