Nowadays it’s not enough to make plans for one film at a time, when you’re playing the superhero movie game. Marvel Studios has projects roughly planned out through to 2021, while Sony and 20th Century Fox have a tentative release schedule worked out for the studios’ respective Marvel film properties (Spider-Man for Sony, Fantastic Four and X-Men for Fox) on through to 2018.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros. and DC have Batman vs. Superman in 2016, but beyond that it’s just been rumor and speculation, as far as future DC releases are concerned. Cast members like the new Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) have reportedly been signed to multi-picture contracts (which include a potential Justice League movie). There’s also been discussion online about Warners/DC developing lower-budgeted superhero genre offerings in the years ahead, based on niche comic book properties like Suicide Squad and Booster Gold – again, though, nothing official has been announced (nor have any release dates been staked out).

Point is, since we don’t have a confirmed DC project beyond the Man of Steel sequel, whenever a big name star is linked to the DC movie universe of late, we tend to assume there’re being considered for a role in Batman vs. Superman – be it significant or an introduction to them having a larger presence in Justice League. That was certainly the case back just before 2013 drew to a close, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed that he was in talks with WB/DC about a role.

So what might that role be, then? Well, The Rock made the trip to Las Vegas this week for the 2014 CinemaCon, in order to promote his upcoming mythology/swords and sandal adventure Hercules (watch the trailer that dropped earlier today). No surprise, he didn’t offer reporters an explicit answer to their questions about his ongoing discussion with DC, though he did offer three hints about the comic book character he’s got his eye on right now (via Coming Soon):

“The first quality we were looking for is that he had to be extremely complex and have a lot going on and what that does for me as an actor and for the studio, just gives us space that we can explore his complexities. The other quality is that the character we were looking for had to be well known but never brought to life. That does, again as an actor, is that it gives me a little bit of space and it just gives me a chance to put an imprint into his personality with the set of tools that I can bring to the table and put a very unique twist on his personality but still pay homage to who he is. The third thing and most important is that he had to be a badass mother***ker and on a Superman level of power where he could throw down.

“In those three qualities, I’m happy we’ve found that character and right now we’re out to a lot of writers.”

It wasn’t long after Johnson dropped the bomb about his renewed DC talks in December 2013 that the rumor started him being eyed to play the John Stewart Green Lantern. Technically, that character fits those three qualifications that Johnson described – recall it was Hal Jordan, not Stewart, who was featured in the 2011 Green Lantern live-action movie – but earlier today, Johnson appeared to shoot that idea down:

Black Adam, for those unfamiliar, is a powerful super-villain who originated in 1945, before he became the primary nemesis for Shazam in the 1970s. However, since the start of the 21st-century, the character has evolved into more of a complex anti-hero and become an important fixture in the DC Comics’ New 52 universe. Johnson has been rumored to play the character before, though any chance of a Shazam live-action movie currently seems to be dead in the water – which doesn’t mean Johnson won’t play Black Adam in a different DC movie, of course.

So, what are some of the other popular choices, based on Johnson’s ground-rules? Well, to name two big ones:

  • Lobo, a character who Johnson has been approached to possibly play in the past (something that he confirmed back in the day), though a movie vehicle featuring the character has been on-again/off-again multiple times over the last half-decade.
  • Cyborg, who is rumored to be introduced in Batman vs. Superman before he appears in subsequent DC films. However, some of those same rumors indicate that the Cyborg in the Man of Steel sequel will be on the younger side (a la more traditional versions of the character) than Johnson would qualify for.

Johnson’s comment about his potential DC movie being “out to a lot of writers” seems to indicate that he is not circling Batman vs. Superman; rather, that he’s being groomed for a vehicle and superhero franchise that he can call his own, which makes sense given his current A-list status. Of course, it’s also possible that the next Superman film and/or Justice League would simply mark his debut in the DC-verse, before The Rock gets a solo feature.

And let’s not forget those pesky rumors from 2012, about WB/DC wanting to include Lobo in a Justice League movie down the line. Indeed, a star of Johnson’s stature would be a logical casting choice to play a potential Justice League member (ex. Martian Manhunter), and could feasibly help WB/DC keep up in the challenging business of superhero movie casting in Hollywood nowadays…

How about it – who do YOU think Johnson is being considered to play in the DC film universe? Better yet, who do you want to see him play in a DC superhero movie?

Batman vs. Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 6th, 2016.

  1. he confirmed its not green lantern.
i cannot see them doing lobo
it no character that has ever been in a movie

i cant decide if it black adam or darkseid
but it is probably darksied since black adam would need to have shazam
whoever he play marvel will probably be hoping it isnt a main hero
if it is dc will have the rock and that is a huge name
how many franchises has the rock brought back or made really awesome?
the guy is a legit money draw so this is great for dc

    • oh, imagine if it was aqua man.
i would love that and it would change the public perception of him
everyone that reads the comics know that aqua man was the best comic in the new 52
i think that he would be the draw an aqua man movie would need

      • I highly doubt that the Rock will play Aquaman.

  2. It’s Jason Todd as Robin. Calling it now.

    • Interesting choice. He does have experience wearing a speedo and fighting.

  3. I could see them casting him as Martian Manhunter. Not saying I agree with it, but after dropping the ball with the casting of Wonder Woman and Batman, I could see them casting The Rock as a “unique twist” on a characters personality who could throw down with Superman and has never been on the big screen before.

    • Lmao! I’m laughing at you because you say they dropped the ball without knowing what they’re doing with these characters.

      • You are right, I don’t know what they plan on doing, fortunately you must because you are laughing at me for not knowing, so enlighten me… What are they going to do with these characters?

        • Make an awesome film.

          • No one knows that, and judging by most of the casting choices this movie is going under.

I always wanted Batman and Superman on the big screen together (fighting each other is a big bonus) since I first read a comic book. I want this movie to be good, but after these casting choices? I’ll buy a ticket, and I will TRY to enjoy it, I hope I am wrong and I love it, but I don’t think that is going to happen.

  4. man he would be a great GL…but I can see him being the martian (although it would be tough) or even Aquaman. Aquaman is super complex and hard to pull off but Rock might

  5. Black Adam all the way.

    • I can see it. Black Adam is BA enough to face off vs Superman. D. Johnson could tear into that role.

  6. Its Cyborg. Guaranteed.

  7. First ones I thought of was John Stewart GL, Martian Manhunter, and Black Adam. I do not think he is right for the first one, don’t know much about the third one…but the fourth one—hhmmm….! (I want Hal Jordan GL for Justice League…way too early to bring Stewart in as the main Lantern, if ever. As a supplemental lantern, well, that might be something to think about down the line….).

An interesting bit of DC trivia regarding a Batman villain: I knew Penguin was named Oswald Cobblepot in “real life”, but I just read that Riddler was named Edward Nigma (E. Nigma). Did not know that until I read that today. I knew Catwoman was named Selina Kyle, and King Tut from the old TV series had a name that escapes me, although I think he was a college professor who taught Egyptology or something. Anyone out there know what Joker’s original name was?

    • Is that a trick question?

      • Uh, no, not meant to be a trick question. I was just wondering if Joker had an established name in the comics before he was The Joker? I really don’t know or don’t remember anyways. I also spotted the trivia in an article about Riddler’s name, and thought it was interesting.

    • I’m so confused by this whole post.

      • You are not the only one…

      • Now I’m con fused by your confusion. Did not know there was anything to be confused about. I just don’t think The Rock would make a good John Stewart. I could see him as Martian Manhunter, and possibly Black Adam, although I really don’t know very much about the Black Adam character, other than vaguely who he is.
I would also very much prefer that the JLA movie use Hal Jordan as their Green lantern, irregardless of who plays him, Reynolds (who I don’t think wants to) or someone else rebooted to the part.
As far as the Batman trivia goes, I just brought it up here since this article did mention Batman as a member of the JLA.
Sorry if I was unclear or confusing.

        • The confusion came from the fact that nothing in your post is a cohesive thought. It’s like just typed out stream of consciousness but with punctuation. You only named three possible options but then said, “but the fourth one—hhmmm….!” What fourth one? Then you just went on naming Batman villains. Most people familiar with Batman know the Riddler’s name and anyone who saw the ridiculousness that was Batman and Robin knew his name was a type of anagram for “enigma.”
In regards to your response, “irregardless” is not a word. The words are either “regardless” or “irrespective.” Also, of course the article mentioned Batman is a member of the JLA. He’s one of the main three. But what does that have to do with anything?

  8. Martian manhunter anyone??

    • I can`t imagine my favorite Wrestler of all time (The Rock) as Martian Manhunter and here is why, John Jones is a silent, intelligent, mystery character with a deep voice. Is it possible for DJ to play the part, yes they can turn it around and make him different

      • True, Dwayne Johnson would have to play the part of martian Manhunter, not the part of the rowdy Rock playing the part of Martian Manhunter. DJ’s regular persona would not fit unless he changed it to fit the part.

  9. PLEASE martian manhunter!!!

  10. I hope the Rock is part of the J L movie and gets his own character movie as well. I would love to see his character in DCCU. I think he’ll be either Lobo, Darkseid or Doomsday w/ a possibility of Cyborg , Hawk man and yes, John Stewart even thoughhe kinda alluded that G L has already been done.

    • Yes! Hawkman! I’ve had a hard time picturing Johnson in any of the rumoured roles, he’s sort of Mr. Personality and I just don’t see a big smiley Samoan playing John Stewart, or the stoic Martian Manhunter. Hawkman, however, I can picture that. I kind of liked the idea of The Rock playing Darkseid, he was a pretty nuts bad guy in Doom… and speaking of Doom, what would people think of Karl Urban and Aquaman?

  11. I’m surprised no on has brought up the possibility that it’s Captain Atom.

    IMO that’s who it is.

    those are my guesses

  13. Metallo?

  14. I think there are some outside the box options for him. He has the stature for Brainiac’s humanoid form, Dr. Ivo’s android AMAZO,a version of Metallo, or even Mongul. He could even be Solomon Grundy or Ultra Man. His favoritism toward Black Adam does give that theory some credit, but he could really be up for quite a number of roles.

  15. Oh god is reynolds still gl, noooooooooooooooo.

    • We need the Hal Jordan version of Green lantern for the movie, but I have a hunch Ryan Reynolds does not want the part.

  16. Hawkman! You heard it here first!

  17. Anyone else feel like Dwayne is a little déclassé for DC?

    • He has a higher social rank than you or I do.

  18. Maybe Bizarro?

  19. Black Adam, he’s a dead ringer for it, and it fits squarely in all his requirements.

  20. From the description i think black adam “extremely complex and have a lot going on and what that does for me as an actor and for the studio, just gives us space that we can explore his complexities.” Only problem is he isnt that well known.I really cant think of any others.I dont think Dc/WB will waste his potential on a pure villian he’s a likable guy so it will be a hero or a villian we feel bad for.

  21. It would be really badass to see the rock as black adam but with the whole “dark gritty and realistic” approach that dc is in love with, a magic character seems out of the question. Personally him as martian manhunter seems stupid. I’m most familiar with the justice league cartoon version of him and from what I remember was a smart outspoken character. And when I think the rock smart and outspoken do not come to mind.

    • If you look at The New 52 Martian Manhunter, he’s basically a combination of Batman and Superman. The mind and personality of Batman, the power and straight of Superman (Slightly more powerful than Superman). So if The Rock is going to play as the Martian Manhunter and it’s based of from The New 52, I’m ok with it. But whatever he’ll play, I’m fine with it.

  22. Vandal Savage anyone?

    • I haven’t heard that before, that is a good call.

    • Vandal Savage = Javier Bardem

  23. Lobo is all about the attitude, not just muscles.

I can imagine the Brahma Bull as : Black Adam, Cyborg, John Stewart, Martian Manhunter,
Can’t imagine him playing the villains role.

  24. I haven’t seen the Rock act in anything since Doom. Has he improved any? I can’t see him pulling off a “complex character”if he hasn’t.

  25. Maybe a giant Flash!

  26. This is the one time I am completely stumped on who I think he could be. I am NOT on the Aquaman boat and I don’t think they’d “waste” (I use that term lightly) him on a villain who is only in one or two of the movies.

  27. black atom would be one or if he wants to make a blockbuster entrance, DARKSEID would
be a heck of a choice. just watch justice league war. he would terrify the jla and civilians with his
menacing stature more so then jesse eisenberg pretending to be the facebook owner trying
    to act like the joker.

  28. I am calling it now. The Rock will be Aquaman!

    • Hmm… yeah, I am thinking he’d be the Rockquaman as well. He’s never really been brought to life in the movies. He’s a complex character. And he’s a badass motherf*cker (unless we’re referring to Super Friends… but that’s just wrong).

  29. The Spectre?
