We couldn’t close out 2013 without at least one more big DC movie rumor – and it is sure to be a doozy. It’s been a year that brought us a new Superman in Man of Steel; a new Batman in Ben Affleck; a big-screen Wonder Woman in Gal Gadot – and rumors of so much more to come on both movie and TV screens. And, as of late, rumors of some huge stars possibly joining the DC movie team.

Now Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s name is being attached to the DC Entertainment/Warner Bros. camp – which is not anything new, really, as Johnson has long been rumored for a DC movie role (including Black Adam in  Shazam and the anti-hero Lobo). Except now there’s one difference: This time it isn’t rumor. This time it’s actually happening.

…Only we don’t exactly know WHAT’S happening. Here’s the Tweet from Johnson that’s gotten fans in an uproar:

So what does that mean, exactly? Since Johnson has already been fan-casted in every role from Lex Luthor, to Bizarro, to Black Adam to Lobo, it could literally be anyone that he is playing – either in Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman movie or in an entirely separate DC intellectual property set to go into production soon.

It is curious that his meeting announcement comes on the heels of recent rumors stating that Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa was testing for Batman vs. Superman, not to mention rumors that iconic villain Doomsday could be in the film as well. It would make sense for either Momoa or Johnson to provide motion-capture work for a character like Doomsday – especially Johnson, who is looking extra-jacked following his role in Brett Ratner’s Hercules movie:

Of course Bizarro would be a viable mo-cap or heavy-makeup performance character as well – and if we’re going by the Superman: The Animated Series version of things, Johnson is not too far away in stature (or skin tone) from that show’s Lex Luthor. The man DID say they were going to “create the cool BAD assery…” Not getting too literal, but that would implicate some kind of villain.

Does this Lex Luthor resemble The Rock?

But Lobo is badass, that’s for sure – and there are plenty of other DC heroes that are a badass fit for Johnson (hell, he could be Hawkman for all we know…). For now, all we know for sure is that The Rock is headed to the DC movie camp – and that’s plenty exciting enough to end the year on.

  1. Always saw Dwayne as a potential Bane for the rebooted Batman somewhere down the line – regardless, I’m glad to see that he’s getting involved. An underrated actor I think, simply because of the material he chooses.

  2. Lobo…or..maybe doomsday…?

  3. I’m still assuming Momoa will be Lobo.

Rock….doesn’t have to be a villain. Sure, he separated the word “badassery” into two parts but that doesn’t mean villain.

Either way, always liked the guy so I’m excited regardless what it’ll be.

Maybe he’ll end up being John Stewart?

    • Sometimes Lobo has been an anti hero, and sometimes a little comedic. I could totally see the Rock playing him.

  4. Well this is interesting. Some definite DC/ Superman vs Batman news that isn’t a “rumour.”

    Something to speculate about….

  5. He’d be an asset to whichever franchise he ends up being attached. This is good news.

  6. Martian Manhunter?

  7. Perfect for Cyborg….

    • I thought that too but then changed my mind and went with Stewart.

  8. i see Cyborg

  9. as long as phoenix is not in the movie i am ok with anythinf…joaquin doesnt need superhero movies he is way better than that

  10. cyborg or captian atom

    • WOW! I didn’t even think of Captain Atom

  11. Man his biceps are scary! I’m interested to see where this goes.

  12. Luther would be good.

    But how about Martian Manhunter?

    • Also a good bet.

This could have absolutely nothing to do with Batman vs Superman too… keep in mind.

The new WB CEO whats-his-face did promise to center the company around the DC property stuff going forward.

  13. Amazo. Its clearly Amazo. Every time the subject of the Rock playing a DC character rises, its always either Black Adam or Lobo or somebody. Amazo. Just you wait and see.

    • I know they said they arent crossing the universes (TV to film) but Ivo is in Arrow so they could cross streams and use Amazo.

    • I’ve always loved the JLU episode with Amazo and he is a formidable opponent of Batman and Superman because you know when he gets your powers he also gets your weakness.

  14. I could see him as John Stewart. Or any huge villain. The man is a monster, and a good actor. Being as big a DC and Wrestling fan as I am I could not be happier that The Rock Is going to join the Universe.

  15. Captain Atom would be good, but I heard he was playin Lobo a long time ago

    • Yeah, Rock wanted to play Lobo (it’s his fave character apparently) but with Momoa’s involvement, I’d think it’s more likely that he’ll be Lobo instead.

      • I dunno… if I were casting Lobo I would definitely choose the actor with the better swagger… and that’s the Rock by a landslide.

        • I totally agree.

        • I disagree for Lobo i was thinking Mickey Rourke or Javier Bardem. I don’t really like the rock as an actor and he doesn’t truly fit the role in my opinion.

          • Maybe even Jon Bernthal as Lobo

  16. he could make Cyborg into a Iron Man popularity wise with his personality

    • as popular as IM

  17. Ladies and Gentleman:

    BLACK F’N ADAM!!!!

  18. Aquaman

  19. If he’s Luthor, then I can finally say I’m excited for this ensemble of a movie.

    • Nope. Sorry. No way.

Warner Brothers is NOT going to cast Dwayne Johnson as Lex Luthor.

WB and DC are going to cast Lex with the biggest name they can. Whether it’s Denzel Washington, Bryan Cranston, Joachin Phoenix, or……….

      • Even with that statement, The Rock has a horse in this race. Wasn’t he the highest-grossing actor of 2013? Obviously, he’s going to carry some weight when his name is attached to anything.

        • Right. I might have rushed to judgement.

To be honest, I really haven’t seen many Dwayne Johnson movies. No offense to him. It’s just that he’s not on my radar when it comes to acting.

I understand he’s got talent and has a huge following.

He WOULD make an interesting Lex Luthor. Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson in the same frame, up on the screen , could be a fascinating sight.

      • Yeah the Rock is far more plausible for Lex Luthor than Bryan Cranston or Denzel. Besides, look at the pic in the article. The resemblance? Huh? Huh?

        • @ Tay1

Hmmmmm…. okay. I’ve been thinking about this and, yeah, it WOULD be interesting casting to have “The Rock” play Lex Luthor.

          Hmmmm……

I can envision Henry Cavill going up against Dwayne Johnson.

          Sure, why not?

  20. I used to think the rock was just a built guy who was wooden eye candy for ladies on screen. Than i saw Southland Tales and the rock(and sean scott as well) blew me away with hia performance. I think whatever role this guy lands hes going to kick major ass in it regardless. This movie is shaping up to be either epic as hell or spiderman 3 part 2.

    • “This movie is shaping up to be either epic as hell or spiderman 3 part 2.”

I’ll go with “EPIC AS HELL” FTW.

  21. Is Lex doing the People’s Eyebrow in that pic?

    • @Prof:

      +1

      Exactly what I was thinking.

“Finally, Lex Luthor has come BACK to Metropolis!”

Or he can be a corny Mr. Freeze like Aaaahnnold.

      • @ Proff @ Big Nerd

        SO. MUCH. WIN.

…ready to lay the smacketh down on Kal-El, on the corner of Know Your Role Blvd and Candy Ass Lane!!! :D :D :D

        • Superman, that roody poo candy ass. He will smell what Lex is cooking.

        • @BigNerd and Dr Mindbender – LOL! I can see him calling Supes a jabroni.

        • He’s gonna take a chunk of kryptonite, shine it up real nice, turn that sum’b**** sideways, and stick it straight up Superman’s candy-ass!

          • …and before he’s done, he’ll hit up Lois Lane for a piece of that Poon-tang Pie!

  22. rock as cyborg, and momoa as doomsday.

  23. Mmmm as much as I think he would be good as cyborg or lex I think he could only ever be doomsday or darksied because they are the only characters that can be bigger than superman on screen

  24. I’d say either Black Adam or Lobo, though Lex is also plausible.

  25. I remember just like it was yesterday that we were getting a Man of Steel 2…..I am going to have assume that this will be the equivalent of a 12 issue DC Maxi series in screen form?

I think the only actors we are missing at this point is Kathy Bates as Granny Goodness and Adrien Brody as Kanto.

    • No, Betty White for Granny Goodness.

  26. I don’t know about Luthor or Cyborg. I can’t see The Rock playing a more political character like Luthor (although, that’s just the interpretation I want to see, so maybe they’ll do something a little different. I’ll be open minded). As for Cyborg, I think Cyborg should stay as the young member of the League, the heart and soul, that dynamic is working really working in the comics. I think Michael B. Jordan would be good for the role.

That being said, there are other characters I think The Rock would be great for, specifically Lobo, Bizarro, or Doomsday. Although, I do like the suggestion of Martian Manhunter, that would be interesting. Either way, I think he’s a good actor with a lot of charisma, he’s usually the best thing in his movies (pain and gain, for example, being a movie I thought was pretty mediocre but he was great in).

    • Oh, I also agree the Rock would be a great Black Adam. I just don’t know about Lex or Cyborg.

  27. He would make an awesome Black Adam. And he would look awesome as Martian Manhunter but I think Jon Jonzz needs a specific personality. Joaquin Phoenix could pull off an amazingly complex, creepy, brilliant Lex.

  28. Lobo is by far the best match for Dwayne. If they go any other direction with him they’ll have completely wasted the best opportunity they have with Dwayne. Maybe the WB and DC will finally grace us with an R-rated movie IF we’re lucky enough?!?!?!?!?!

    • We got Watchmen, which ironically enough got a lot of criticism for it’s R rating.

  29. I can’t see WB/DC paying $$$ to either Denzel or Johnson to play a bit part. Too much money for either actor. Denzel is freaking Denzel and Johnson did have the biggest box office of any actor in 2013. So yeah count on either they are THE main villain – so Darkseid (unlikely, because if you pay DJ money – you bring him back in the next movie). So not a bit part, not a shared villain, so no to Lobo unless its a Lobo starring role. I could see him as John Stewart in another Green Lantern Corps movie – but still struggle with that. My bet is on WB promise to mine DC comics for properties in the future.

My bet is Sgt Rock or John Stewart.

    • This just has me thinking it’s gotta be Luthor. He’s almost assured to be the main villain in Superman vs. Batman (at least from behind the scenes.)
