DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: December 13, 2011

Published 2 years ago by , Updated August 8th, 2012 at 7:01 am,

There are 26 new releases out on Blu-ray this week and of those we have picked 10 we think are worth talking about. It is an interesting mix of films: a classic black and white comedy – Seven Chances starring Buster Keaton – a summer blockbuster – Rise of the Planet of the Apes – an award winning drama – Heavenly Creatures – an animated martial arts bear – Kung Fu Panda 2 – a family friendly action film – The Rocketeer –  a neighbor who is a vampire – Fright Night – and a high-kicking, limb-severing, face-punching ninja movie from the ’80s – Five Elemental Ninjas.

Let’s see which are worth owning, which are worth renting and which ones to avoid altogether.

Transformers Trilogy Box Set

transformers trilogy box set blu ray cover DVD/Blu ray Breakdown: December 13, 2011

Click the Image to buy it on Amazon.com

Pulling in a staggering $2.6 billion dollars worldwide Hasbro’s toy line turned movie directed by Michael Bay has become a wildly successful film franchise. So successful in fact that Bay is in talks to direct Transformers 4 next year. The story may be weak, the acting sub-par and the dialog eye-rolling bad at times but no one can ever say the visual effects and action from the Transformers films isn’t absolutely top notch. This newly released box set doesn’t offer anything new or spectacular in the way of special features but it is a good opportunity for a person to own all three for a decent price if they haven’t already done so.

Special Features:

Transformers

  • Commentary by Director Michael Bay
  • Heads Up Display
  • BD-Live

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

  • No advance listing of the special features was released

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

  • No advance listing of the special features was released

VERDICT: Own It (Unless you already own all three films on Blu-ray, then Skip It)

  1. expendable and apes are looking good.
the transformers case looks like crap!!! looks like it took 5 minutes in photoshop to put the pictures together and then slap a big tf sign on there, and this is coming from a fan of the franchise. ill hold off until the transforming case come out.

    • lol they put so much money and time into making the films, u think they could design a decent box cover, it looks like crap

      • do you watch the movies or the case? Who cares what the case looks like. I buy a film for the movie, not the case.

  2. There is a whole lot of “own it”s up there. lol

And I love how loyal this site is to it’s fans. Even though there has been “Fright Night” ads on this site for the past week or two… your recommendation is still “rent it”. Good form

    • @Raven – I didn’t even think of that lol. The movie was Meh at best. The original is much better.

    • Well that’s just funny. Haha

    • Raven,

We’re not influenced by the advertisers/ads running on the site when it comes to our opinions/reviews (believe it or not).

      Vic

  3. I own the oringinal Blu-Ray of The Expendables but now I have to get the new one since you mentioned that Sully Erna has a new video. Damn you Paul, jk.

  4. Looks like a good week in DVDs.
Will definitely get Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
and saving up for Midnight in Paris next week.

  5. I didn’t even know the original Fright Night was on Blu-ray..That is a must own..The new one was Meh

  6. Woohoo. I was waiting for the Transformers trilogy before collecting these movies on blu-ray – glad to see I can get it all in one package now.

  7. Hmm, I actually haven’t tried The Expendables yet. I guess I’ll rent first just in case, though.

  8. I miss the way the dvd reviews were done before just saying.

  9. To anyone interested in the ORIGINAL Fright Night on BLURAY… This has a limited run of ONLY 3000 copies. You can order it from Amazon or on Screen Archives Entertainment’s website ONLY. You cannot pick it up at Walmart or Best Buy etc. If you are a fan I would suggest snagging one ASAP. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up!

    • Holy hell, I just looked it up… You’re right. That is crazy. And it’s like $30 – $40 for the Blu-Ray… I love ‘Fright Night’, but it’s not worth that much lmfao.

  10. I know, right? It was $34.30 shipped from SAE. FN is one of my favorite movies though, so I had to pull the trigger.
