DVD Blu ray Releases Janaury 18 2011 DVD/Blu ray Breakdown: January 18, 2011

This week’s DVDs and Blu-rays are thin in number, but varied in taste. No major blockbusters hit home video this week, but there is one movie and one television show that should easily make their way into collections everywhere.

Look for one of Ryan Reynolds’ most daring performances in the claustrophobic thriller Buried. Meanwhile, Timothy Olyphant starred as one of television’s best new characters, Raylan Givens, in the first season of Justified.

The following titles can now be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

NEW RELEASES

Buried DVD Blu ray box art DVD/Blu ray Breakdown: January 18, 2011

Buried – Ryan Reynolds starred in a film that took quite a risk by pinning the actor in a coffin for the entirety of the movie. The story is relentless and stays inside the coffin the entire time. Buried ended up as one of our Favorite Films of 2010. Our 4-star review was favorable as well, calling it “one of the most ambitious concept films of the year.”

Claustrophobia is put on full display with this thriller that grossed a mere $18 million, but it’s safe to assume the production budget was low as well. Either way, Buried was a success and definitely worth a rental.

Considering how much praise I gave Buried, you may be wondering why I only call it a rental. Well, the movie is great, but the home video is not. All that comes with it is a single 18-minute special feature documenting the making of Buried. Then again, what do you expect from a movie that takes place in a coffin?

Takers DVD Blu ray box art DVD/Blu ray Breakdown: January 18, 2011

Takers – Some movies come along and sweep you off your feet with non-stop action and engaging characters – Takers is not that movie. Instead, Takers is a generic movie whose only strength is its excessive use of color tones. We were unimpressed in our 2-star review of the action heist film.

Takers just missed our list of The 10 Worst Movies of 2010. While some fans think it deserved a spot on the list, it had some nice action sequences and certain scenes tried very hard to be good. It also found a way to double its production budget with a $68 million worldwide box office – chalk that up to the ensemble cast.

The special features are better than Buried, but lack enough of a behind-the-scenes punch to really make this home video worth your money.

  • Executing the Heist: The Making of Takers
  • Take Action!
  • Music Video: T.I., “Yeah Ya Know (Takers)”

Justified DVD Blu ray box art DVD/Blu ray Breakdown: January 18, 2011

Justified: The First Season – ‪After giving a drug lord 24 hours to get out of Miami, the television viewing audience was introduced to the best new character on television, Raylan Givens. As Givens makes his way to a sit-down with said drug-dealer, there are 30 seconds left in that 24-hr time-limit. With Givens’ promise to shoot him dead when time runs out, audiences were left in suspense as this U.S. Marshall readied his gun.‬

‪With a couple of quick-draw gun shots the promise was fulfilled and the character of Raylan Givens became engrained in the minds of all those watching. It is with Givens’ intriguing temperament, combined with the terrific storytelling, that brought this iconic Elmore Leonard character to life in Justified and, once again, continues FX’s status as one of the top cable networks.‬

The home video release of the complete first season includes all 13 episodes and a pile of extra features.

  • Commentaries: “Fire in the Hole” with executive producer Graham Yost, actor Nick Searcy, Elmore Leonard expert Gregg Sutter and director Michael Dinner… “Blowback” with Graham Yost and writer Ben Cavell… “Hatless” with actors Tim Olyphant and Natalie Zea, and writer Dave Andron… “Bulletville” with Graham Yost and writer/producer Fred Golan
  • What Would Elmore Do?
  • The Story of Justified
  • Justified: Meet the Characters
  • Shooting for Kentucky
  • The Marshals
  • Music video: “Long Hard Times to Come”
  • Season Two: A Look Ahead

Animal Kingdom DVD Blu ray box art DVD/Blu ray Breakdown: January 18, 2011

Animal Kingdom – This Australian film is making all kinds of noise this awards season. It got off to a fantastic start when it won the Award for World Cinema at The Sundance Film Festival. Star Jacki Weaver was recently nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress. In limited release few saw it, but the movie is filled with powerful performances.

If the Oscars come around and you still haven’t seen Animal Kingdom, you have only one person to blame – yourself. Give it a chance and rent it, or go for the blind buy. Either way, you might be thoroughly impressed by one of this year’s better foreign films.

The special features give a taste of the creation of Animal Kingdom, but save most of its secrets. The supplements are a quick look inside the movie.

  • Audio commentary with director David Michôd
  • Creating Animal Kingdom
  • Q&A with director David Michôd and actors Jacki Weaver and James Frecheville

  1. Watching takers at the moment. Its really good! :D

    • I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but… I agree with you. I really liked Takers as well.

      • DSB

        wow. :)

Im thinking of buying it actually. We rented it from Redbox lol.

        • I think I will wait a few months before getting it, then it will be half the price on Blu Ray anyway, plus I have just unlocked the region coding on my player so I can get Blu Ray’s from the states!

          • Youre right ill wait till I get it for $15 on blu ray ;)

          • DSB is your region unlock a software or hardware hack? I have over a thousand region 1 DVDs and quite a few BR (Being an American an England I have been looking for a region free player, but haven’t found any high quality brands)

            • It’s hardware, just a code hack, allows you to make the dvd region free and allows you to change the blu ray region code at will.

      • DSB you just made me cry.

  2. I could never really get into Justified, I tried, but the characters just didnt really grab me. I watched about 5 episodes and bowed out.

    • Same here DrSam

Strange because I love Timmothy O., FX, the dude from Shield and the “small town theme”…I love all those things but I just couldn’t connect with the characters. Still a good show and hope it doesn’t get canceled like Terriers.

    • Sam, sorry to hear that. Justified is really a terrific show!!! I’m gonna get Takers later this week, it’s one of two movies that I actually liked HC in.

      • What was the other?

I think I’m like the only fan HC actually has!

        • Jumper, really loved that movie.

          • Jumper is frickin brilliant!!! I really hope they get around to making a sequel one day. I’d pay good money to see that.

            • Same here, in fact I think i’ll watch that now. It’s been a while since I have seen it.

              • I watched it a few weeks ago. Have you read the book? It’s quite different but still very good

                • No, looks like I’ll be looking for it this weekend lol. Who is the author?

                  • Stephen Gould. There is a sequel as well called Reflex.

            • The book has a sequel…

        • I too like HC. I like that he’s been doing more stuff. I think I am the only person who liked Awake. I thought his acting in it was one of his best. Jumper was freakin’ cool! I think I’ll Netflix Takers before thinking about buying it though.

          • I liked Awake. It was a creepy concept but it was a bit much stretching it into a movie.
I like HC. He was really good in Episode III. I love Jumper.

            • I agree he was better in III than II. I thought Awake was a bit dragged out, but I thought they did enough with a simple concept to make it interesting and hold your attention. The ending made me :O

  3. hmm nothin i wanna get

  4. At least RED comes out next week…

  5. Respectfully disagree re: Buried. Sure, some of the sequences are intense, and the ending is both fitting and smart. But much of the material seems forced. The script exists to take a half hour concept and stretch it til its breaking point. The film is relentlessly dour in a way that doesn’t make Reynold’s character worth our time.

    • Agreed Christian

Very surprised this movie got such a positive response. I just don’t see it. And usually I can be objective and see why ppl would like it but not with this film. The ending was the proverbial nail in the coffin (see what I did there?) and I cannot recommend this film to anyone.

  6. im gonna hit up buried this week wanted to see it on the big screen but i never got around to it

  7. Finally got a HDTV…. My first Bluray was 5th Element. Justified may be the 2nd depending on cost. I really enjoy this show.

    • Glad to see you’re still lurking here Aknot, and yes Justified is a great well acted show!!

      • Glad to see someone cares… :D Trying to get a new job the holidays current job etc….. crap just decided to pile up in one steaming heap as it does sometimes.

I see Amazon appears to have the Bluray for 25$.

  8. I really enjoyed Buried, I would agree that it’s not a buy, but it’s worth a rental for most. I’m a huge Reynold’s fan though, so I will eventually pick it up.

Animal Kingdom is a must buy, that was a fantastic film, and everyone should watch it!

I got to see the first episode of Justified, didn’t get to watch it any further, I’d like to get into it, but need to finish Boardwalk Empires first.

  9. Dark Skies has finally been released on dvd.
6 disc set with lots of bonus material.

    • Whats that about?

  10. Dark Skies was a tv series that told the story of the top secret Majestic 12 group. The series started out with the Kennedy assination and went from there exposing the ufo conspriacies etc.

Came out in I wanna say 1995???

    • I loved that show did it actually end properly it just stopped in the UK hope it comes out over here

  11. We’ll the show was literally exposing parts of the truth. It was cancelled asap here as well.

  12. Justified for sure. Never got to see the first season, but the show looks fantastic and I love Walton Goggins. Have Season 2 ready to record and pre ordered Season 1 two weeks ago. Gonna plow through season 1 and then start watching my recorded season 2 episodes.

    • Daniel, Justified is a damn AWESOME show. You will dig it for sure.

      • Yea Im really looking forward to it anthony.

Especially since it was so cheap on Amazon picked up entire first season for 19.99

Great deal. The show looks good I just wish it was staring Walton rather than Timothy O. I’m a much bigger fan of Walton.

Answer this for me if you don’t mind. Is Waltons part pretty large? I get the feeling he is a reoccurring character rather than a full on cast member.

        • Recurring character Daniel, but he makes his mark in all his appearances, trust me. And he’ll be a recurring character in season 2 as well.

  13. Also Direct to dvd today,,,

    Death Race 2!

Starring Danny Tregio. (That guy from Machette.)

Its prob better then The Social Network.
    Lol,,,

    • How can it not be? I mean when you put guns on cars, the end product is pure awesome. And then they threw Danny Trejo into the mix!

      • It’s a slightly below average action flick. The fight scenes are lazy. The protagonist doesn’t really have enough charisma/likability. Sean Bean is in there and of course he’s amazing, but he’s only there for a short time. Danny Trejo is always ok in small parts. Robin Shou is underused. The car stunts are pretty good though and it moves at a good pace.

Worth a rental for sure but not much else.
