Today, thanks to NYPost and Filmstalker, we have two pretty significant pieces of news relating to the upcoming Spider-Man 4 for you. One relating to Kirsten Dunst’s involvement with the film, the other relating to the rumors of the vampire character Morbius being a villain within the fourth movie.

Firstly, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane…

The last we heard about Kirsten Dunst returning as Mary Jane in Spider-Man 4, director Sam Raimi had said he very much wants to see her return. Not long after, he revealed that he had met with her to talk about her possible return. So on the Mary Jane front, it was looking very likely that Dunst would reprise her role. Today, we have confirmation from producer Todd Black that Dunst is, “definitely on-board,” to return in Spider-Man 4 as Peter Parker’s love interest, Mary Jane.

Black revealed some tidbits about Spider-Man 4 while promoting the upcoming Denzel Washington/John Travolta thriller The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, one of which was the confirmation of Dunst returning to the successful superhero franchise. I think this news won’t come as a surprise to many, but at least after the months of speculation, we now have confirmation from one of the key filmmaking players.

On a related note to the character of Mary Jane, there were rumors going around that the Spider-Man 4 script featured a wedding between her and Peter Parker (which Spider-Man fans will know is a storyline published in the 1987 comic, The Wedding!). However, that appears to have been news to Black – he has no knowledge of such a marital subplot. So either he is being kept in the dark by Raimi and co. (which is very unlikely) or marriage is off the table for Peter and Mary Jane, at least for the fourth movie.

Now onto the much talked about issue of who the villain will (and will not) be in Spider-Man 4

Real speculation about Morbius possibly being one of the villains in Spider-Man 4 first surfaced when director Sam Raimi talked about his interest in the character from the comics. After that, Raimi also hinted very slyly at the possibility of Morbius being the villain, revealing how he thinks a vampire villain would be an interesting idea for the Spider-Man franchise.

Even if Raimi is the man behind the curtain, so to speak, it was all speculation and wishful thinking about Morbius appearing in Spider-Man 4. However, in addition to confirming Dunst will be back as Mary Jane, Black also spoke about Morbius being the villain. And guess what? – That rumor is totally untrue, according to Black. He squashed the Morbius rumor completely, and said the actual villain is still being worked on:

“We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York.”

So I’m guessing even with the success of the vampire franchise of Twilight, Sony Pictures Entertainment (the studio distributing the movie) aren’t taking that bait with Spider-Man 4. I actually think it would have been interesting to have Morbius as Spidey’s adversary, simply because it adds a much different and sinister tone to a franchise which has been fairly “light” up until this point… but that’s just me.

So the squashing of the Morbius villain rumor by Black logically leads us onto speculation about who the villain might be. The info about the villain being, “a big part of New York,” is a great hint that allows fan to discuss feverishly for the next few months (or until whenever the villain gets officially announced) on who Spider-Man’s foe might be this time around.

Speculation has already begun online as to who the Spider-Man 4 villain might be, with the likes of The Kingpin (last seen in live-action form in Daredevil, portrayed by Michael Clarke Duncan), Kraven the Hunter, and, of course, The Lizard, being thrown around. The latter, as Spider-Man fans will know, is actually Dr. Connors whom we’ve seen throughout the first three Spider-Man movies. Personally, I think it would make sense for it to be The Lizard, since he has been hinted at for years now within the live-action Spider-Man storyline.

Whoever Raimi and co. choose to be the villain in Spider-Man 4, I just hope they take their time with implementing them correctly, and not making the mistake of rushing and jamming them into an already created storyline just because the fans want to see a particular villain on the big-screen (hint: Venom). And, Mr. Raimi, please just limit the movie to one villain – the likes of Batman & Robin and, of course, Spider-Man 3 should provide fair warning that the multiple villain thing seldom works.

What do you think of Kirsten Dunst being back as Mary Jane, and Morbius not being the villain in Spider-Man 4? Who do you think should be the villain in the fourth installment?

Spider-Man 4 is slated for a release on May 6th, 2011.

  1. i jus figured theyed have kraven hunt lizard and spiderman fighting and protecting him but i think the stars are getting a bit too old and it shouldnt be done or recast or the actors should really focus this time and look great and in shape this time around

  2. i was kinda hoping for carnage

  3. They shouldn’t do Carnage until the get Venom RIGHT.

  4. matt is right,
actually not until raimi is done^^

they def should do lizard. then
they should do a shocker rhino mix i think..

  5. PLEASE MAKE THIS MOVIE HAVE SOME VIOLENCE IN IT, IT DOESN`T NEED TO BE TOO DARK, BUT WHERE`S THE DRAMA, WHERE`S THE SCI-FI. Spiderman can be all ages cuz he`s really not that powerful of a superhero. Just because it`s a little dark doesn`t mean it can`t be for kids, Spiderman is PG-13, which means their parents can watch it with them. It just needs to be a little more scary, you know. Or else no intensity will be received by the audiences heart rate. Just a few unimportant people should die and that`s it. It worked well in the first one, and that doesn`t mean there needs to be hitting or abusing or something like that. PLEASE DON`T TREAT IT TOO MUCH LIKE A KID`S FRANCHISE, ALSO PLEASE DON`T MAKE SPIDERMAN HAVE A KID.

  6. AND PLEASE SET CARNAGE UP FOR SM5 IN THE FINAL SHOT OF 4.

  7. PLEASE MAKE THESE NEXT 2 MOVIES JUST A LITTLE DARK, JUST MAKE A FEW PEOPLE DIE WITH MAYBE SOME EXTRA TYPE OF VIOLENCE SO THAT IT CAN BE MORE SCARY, IT WON`T MAKE IT A SAD FILM BUT PLEASE MAKE IT FOR ALL AGES PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE DON`T JUST MAKE IT COMLETELY LIGHT MAKE IT JUST A LITTLE DARK PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASSSSSSSEE!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. PLS JUST MAKE SOME PEOPLE DIE IN THESE NEXT 2, PLEASE PUT SOME VIOLENCE IN IT PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. They should use The Lizard and get his story over with. Id like to see Carnage, only if Venom is included in a bigger way with someone better to play the role. Does Shocker have a good origin? I think of Rhino as a 2nd villain knowing he’s just a heavyweight thug for hire.

  10. I CAN`T EXCEPT IT NOT BEING DARK, FILM MAKERS PLEASE DON`T TREAT IT COMPLETELY WEAK AND CHILDISH, JUST BECAUSE IT`S A SUPERHERO WITH SUPERPOWERS DOESN`T MEAN IT CAN`T BE DARK, PLEASE MAKE THESE NEXT 2 FILMS HAVE SOME VIOLENT KILLING AND INTENSITY IN IT, PLEASE DON`T MAKE IT UNDARK PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. i like spidrman 4 i like tobey magiure and kristen dunst i will see them on spider-man 4 on spiderman tobey as spiderman team up with venom played by topher grace vursus morbuis played by jeff hardy carnage played by jim carrey im so exciting i love you tobey magiure and kristen dunst i will see them on spiderman 4 in theatres may 6th 2011 see ya.

  12. I would love Morbius in the 4th!! He has a great story in what I saw the “Cartoons” of Spiderman. Hes really cool XP

  13. Also, if Morbius was in, then it’d sell more, because people are into the “twilight” craze, and a movie with a vampire I think people would be interested in. I mean, I really don’t like the thought of it advertising as a “twilight” type movie, because its not, I’m just saying it would sell big…..oh well…

  14. But you know what I want to see more than anything? Is a second Little Nicky! It wasn’t that bad! I thought it was funny just BECAUSE it was corny…a return of Adrian would have been awesome too =/

  15. @ Melissa
Morbius is a good villain and i liked the story arc in the 90′s Spider-Man animated series. I really hope Buena Vista will release that show on dvd volume sets just like the X-men animated series. But for the next film im hoping for The Lizard & Carnage so they can get them outta the way and save Morbius for Spidey 5 or 6. I wonder what role Bruce Campbell is gonna have. Is Tobey Maguire decides to quit after the 4th film, i liked someone’s idea of having Ryan Reynolds as Spider-Man. He’d be perfect as Spidey, and id think he would be perfect to play the Wally West version of the Flash if they make a film on him.

  16. If the do have morbeous they would have to bring blade into this which would be realy cool

  17. they need to find some way to incloud black cat into the movie becuase she is a twist in MJ and Peters Love thing
