‘Dumb and Dumber To’ Dropped By Warner Bros.; Sequel May Find New Home

Carrey and Daniels in Dumb and Dumber Dumb and Dumber To Dropped By Warner Bros.; Sequel May Find New Home

Reports of a Dumb & Dumber sequel – to be directed by the original’s creators, Bobby and Peter Farrelly (who had nothing to do with the now-forgotten prequel, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd) – have routinely surfaced over the years, with the most recent information confirming the title of Dumb and Dumber To while adding some plot details. Now it’s being reported that New Line Cinema’s parent company Warner Bros. is not moving forward with the sequel any longer.

It appears that the studio has shied away from the project despite a proposed budget in the low $30 million range, due to the poor commercial reception of the Steve Carell-starring The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which had a similar budget but only grossed around $22 million domestically. Carrey played a rival magician to Carell’s title character, and while his performance garnered favorable reviews, the movie in general was poorly received.

All may not be lost for fans who want to see Carrey re-team with Dumb and Dumber co-star Jeff Daniels:  Deadline reports that Red Granite, financier for the upcoming Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio reunion The Wolf of Wall Street, is in the first position to pick up the sequel. There are apparently five distributors eyeing this deal, with special emphasis placed on Universal (for no apparent reason, so take that detail with some salt).

Red Granite would have to act fast to wrap up both actors, though, since Daniels is set to return to his HBO series The Newsroom, and Carrey is starring in Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess’ Loomis Fargo, an action-comedy set around a night guard at an armored car company who organizes a huge heist.

Logistics aside, will this project happen? Given the spotty decade experienced by the Farrelly brothers and Jim Carrey, the answer is: probably, if everyone can agree on a deal. While it’s been in development limbo for so long that we have to be continually reminded that it’s still happening, since the usually sequel-averse Carrey is apparently on board, it’s a good bet that we’ll be seeing this eventually. But do we want to?

The last time Bobby and Peter Farrelly teamed up with Jim Carrey, they gave the world Me, Myself & Irene, with everyone involved at the peak of their hilarious, gross-out form. Carrey has fared marginally better than the Farrellys since then (excluding some recent political controversy), and while his upcoming turn as Col. Stars and Stripes in Kick-Ass 2 looks like one of that sequel’s highlights, the Farrelly brothers should definitely be looking to redeem themselves after their disastrous Three Stooges movie.

In an era of R-rated comedies which up the sex and raunch quota (even when compared to the Farrellys at their peak), Dumb and Dumber To could prove a throwback to a time when gross comedies were actually fun. Lloyd and Harry’s idiocy brought a distinct innocence to the whole thing, a trait sorely lacking in mainstream comedies today. (Re: the cynicism of The Internship.)

Expect more details on the long-running saga of Dumb and Dumber To as they surface.

  1. Hmmm…..I guess WB likes Archie better.

  2. Burt Wondertone didnt fail because of Carrey though. It failed due to just a bad story. I thought carrey was hilarious in it for what he had to work with.

    • Agree !

    • Also agree!

  3. Funnily enough, I tried to think of the last time a gross out movie was actually funny and the conclusion was that after Dumb And Dumber, writers and studios stopped bothering to make things funny and just went with the “hey, that Tom Green guy was pretty popular, lets copy his style but take things even further and gross people out without the jokes or any coherent reason for these things to be happening” approach.

  4. All of Jim Careys early movies were hilarious, I never really liked Cable Guy until I watched it again recently and couldn’t stop laughing, I think it’s tough to make a genuinely funny movie these days without showing scenarios and telling jokes we have already seen before, for every American Pie or Hangover we get numerous sequels that just never compare!

  5. I can’t stand Jim Carrey. He was not funny at all. I will skip it.

  6. I would really be surprised if someone does not finance this, as for a budget of 30 million, it could easily make at least four times that much, especially in a worldwide market.

  7. Just let this project die already! We don’t need a Dumb & Dumber To, the first one was funny enough!

    • Yes, let’s not have any sequels to anything at all, especially for those of us who appreciate and enjoy the continuation of a story!

Let Batman die. Let Spiderman die. Let The Hobbit die. Let Fast and Furious die. Let James Bond die. Let Star Trek and Star Wars die.

      Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it?

      • really ?
did dumb and dumber end on a cliff hanger ?

        • So, then, you are claiming that all sequels have stemmed from cliff hangers? Really?

          • I agree with Fast and Furious, they should have let it die after Tokyo Drift!! :)

  8. Yes. We need another Dumb and Dumber. That was my generation’s Caddyshack. THere has been NOTHING in the past 20 years that comes that close to perfect in terms of comedy. Today’s kids have nothing but fast cars and D-bags. popped-collar stupidity, ya know what I’m talking about? The Dumb and Dumber MUST come back!

    • What??? … your missing a few classic comedies after Dumb & Dumber I guess you haven’t seen them yet. American Pie; 40 Year Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, Anchorman: Ron Jeremy; Step Brothers; Knocked Up; Drillbit Taylor;
Superbad and I`m sure there’s more to come

    • I actually agree with Batboy999. I’m in my 40’s, and I know myself and a number of my friends hold Dumb and Dumber as one of the funniest comedies of all time (ranking right up there with Airplane). We still allude to and quote lines from it. Although there have been some decent comedies since, nothing, in our opinion, that has been so thoroughly funny, through and through.

  9. I thought that The Three Stooges was a pretty funny movie and a good tribute to the original Stooges. Not sure where the author got that it was disastrous.

    • I agree that it was a funny movie and I don’t get where the hate for it is coming from.

Perhaps it was called a disaster it didn’t do as well as it could have financially (since it made $54 Million world wide)?

  10. Burt Wonderstone was just a bad film.

Unfortunately there were a handful of very funny lines that would be worth remembering except I don’t and no way would I sit through the film again to to remember them.

Anyone going to see it might want to take a pen and jot down the few worthwhile jokes. I remember at the time thinking I should remember that one but then of course did not.

    • It appears most of us agree here, but what we are saying is that Carrey was good in it, with what he had to work with. If he doesn’t do Dumb and Dumber To, it would be nice if he did another Ace Ventura – Pet Detective.

      • Hi Jeff, did you ever see the second Ace Ventura?? It was one of the worst movies ever made and the first was fantastic! Perhaps Jim Carrey has lost his appeal nowadays and is now a spent force, that penguin film was not great, that train one was not all that good and I’ve not seen the Wonderstone movie yet, friends have said its poor – Waiting to rent that one. Dumb and Dumber was a ‘one off’ classic in my opinion – I would be interested to see how a sequel turned out but this news has not ruined my day.

  11. DO IT!!
