In case it hasn’t sunk in yet: yes, Dumb and Dumber To – Bobby and Peter Farelly’s aptly-named sequel to their popular 1990s lowbrow comedy hit Dumb and Dumber – has, in fact, begun production, with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, respectively.

This news arrives following a year of speculation as to the belated project’s fate, teetering between falling into the abyss of development hell for comedy sequels (where it would’ve joined Ghostbusters 3) and finally becoming a reality. (That Dumb and Dumber 2 began production right after Daniels became an Emmy-winner for his role as Will McAvoy on Aaron Sorkin’s self-important TV series The Newsroom – that’s just icing on the cake.)

Hence, there’s been a surge in casting announcements for the project in recent weeks. 1980s icon/Oscar-nominee Kathleen Turner (more recently seen as Sue Collini on Californication) was one of the first new additions confirmed for Dumb and Dumber To, followed not too long thereafter by such recognizable faces and small screen actors/actress as The Walking Dead alum Laurie Holden (who plays Andrea on AMC’s successful zombie/survival drama TV series).

THR, following the start of production, has since confirmed that comedic type Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street) is onboard for the Farrelly’s long-awaited sequel, which picks up in real-time after the first movie and is reported to revolve around Harry and Lloyd’s efforts to locate Harry’s (presumed…) long-lost daughter – as featured in the script written by the filmmaking siblings, partly drawing from an earlier draft written by Sean Anders and John Morris (We’re the Millers).

In addition, it’s been revealed that a certain Oscar-winning actress will make a cameo in the film. If you don’t want to be spoiled ahead of sitting down to watch Dumb and Dumber To in theaters, then STOP READING NOW.

Still here? The actress in question happens to be a confessed hardcore fan of the original Dumb and Dumber – and yes, of course we mean Meryl Streep Jennifer Lawrence. Unfortunately, Lawrence won’t be playing the (purported) offspring of Harry; rather, she is reported to be playing the young version of Turner’s character via a flashback sequence.

Turner, as it were, is reported to be playing Harry’s former flame and baby mama, who sends him and Lloyd a letter revealing that the former’s child needs a kidney transplant. Meanwhile, Riggle is supposed to make a double-appearance, as a pair of twins: handyman Travis and his unstable brother, Captain Lippencott (“Captain” of what, is anyone’s guess right now).

Intriguing casting announcements aside, many a person is just waiting on the trailer for Dumb and Dumber To, in order to better gauge whether this sequel looks to be a good idea finally realized… or a bad idea that never should’ve happened in the first place. Daniels, for his part, has promised that the sequel will outdo the original Dumb and Dumber in terms of (dis)tasteful gags and outrageous humor. Thing is, not having enough lewd humor is generally not something that the Farrellys’ output from the past 10-15 years (see: Me, Myself & Irene, Shallow Hall, Three Stooges, etc.) has been criticized for.

Do you think the casting and premise for Dumb and Dumber To is crazy enough to work – or just crazy?

Dumb and Dumber To doesn’t have an official release date yet, but is expected to open in theaters in 2014 (i.e. in time for the original movie’s 20th anniversary).

  1. I wonder if Rob Riggle is going to play the part where he thinks he’s better than everyone else and will overact his anger. – Pee Wee Herman has more of a character range than this goof.

    • Rob Riggle’s far funnier than you.

      • That’s the difference, I wasn’t trying to be funny. – are you Rob Riggle? If so, that would make sense – you think you’re better than me and you’re over the top angry. Nice try Rob.

        • I only know Riggle from Step Brothers and he wasn’t funny in that either so if that’s his schtick then damn, American audiences really don’t know what actual comedy is, do they?

Then again, I think Bill Hicks was just an annoying guy that ranted and didn’t attempt to make any of his material funny. Jim Jeffries and Brendon Burns do that too but they are actually funny.

          • I dont prefer american comedies very often, i lean much more into edgar wright films or for television The IT crowd. I am from the u.s so it may mot suprise you dazz but i found the u.k version of the office far worse than the american version. Not to say gervais isnt funny cause i love extras.

            • Jim Jeffries is highly overrated. I’ve never found any of his “comedy” even remotely funny.

          • Hey Dazz. I’m calling you out. Why are you so often inclined to belittle American audiences? Who/what makes you the “authority” on them? What country are you from? Your arrogance/ignorance is really getting tiresome.

            • I just think dazz needs to realize that people have diffrent opinion. America didnt make rob riggle join this film, we didnt even give him a role in the film. The directors did, and to group all americans with these directors is wrong. Much like why pacific rim underperformed in america, not everyone likes monster movies and the marketing campaign was horid. Movies follow trends and pacific rim followed the underperforming del torro movies or monster movies. Either way i respect dazz he has good taste and good opinions

              • I respect his opinion as well, although I don’t always agree with it, but the constant belittling of American audiences is getting old. I’ve seen it under multiple discussions.

Dazz, perhaps you aren’t aware how it conveys, but it does get offensive and tiresome. Hopefully, you take that as constructive feedback.

  2. I think Screen Rant is the only site that bothered to label the secret cameo as a spoiler and not give it away in the headline. Other sites should take note.

  3. This film has its original leads. That’s all I care about. Can’t wait!!

  4. The film title is wrong in the article title. You forgot the “er” in “Dumb and Dumb To”.

    • Well, I suppose if ever such an article title mistake was fitting, it’d be for this movie. ;-)

Anyway, thanks for the catch, it’s been corrected.

  5. If that’s your impression of Hicks, then you don’t know his material very well. I wish he were still alive. Probably the greatest stand up of all time. Endlessly quotable.

  6. Not surprising. I think on Conan she said she was a huge fan of the original.

  7. I don’t know about this movie, as beyond the title I am not familiar with it, but I saw the reboot of Three Stooges by these F-Bros., and it was actually pretty good!

    • You never saw Dumb and Dumber? It is among my favorite comedies. Friends and I quote lines from it all the time. Don’t know your taste in humor, but if you saw and liked Airplane, Ace Ventura – Pet Detective, Austin Powers, Liar Liar, and the like, you would probably quite enjoy it.

  8. Goof Balls …lol

  9. All I see is Will MacAvoy now when I see pictures of Jeff Daniels. Really disconcerting lol.
