Much like Harry and Lloyd's spontaneous road trip from Providence to Aspen, the journey to a Dumb and Dumber sequel (we don't include the lackluster prequel) was prolonged by setbacks and filled with uncertainty. However, with the film's production finally underway and much of its cast secured, we can assure fans of the 1994 comedy hit that the Farrelly Brothers' followup, titled Dumb and Dumber To, is really happening, and this week we learned that it will be hitting theaters almost exactly 20 years after its hilarious predecessor.

Universal Pictures announced this week that the film will release on November 14, 2014. While it's the only major comedy opening that month (that we know of so far), competition will be stiff for the long-awaited sequel, as Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 are set to open the week prior.

However, even with some major tentpoles hitting multiplexes around the same time, Dumb and Dumber To should find an audience - one that has been looking forward to more of Harry and Lloyd's misadventures for nearly two decades. Add in returning stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and the original's helmers, the Farrelly Brothers, and Universal could have the formula for repeat success.

The main ingredients are certainly there, but several notable developments in recent months have added even more interest to the already anticipated project. Two months back, we learned that Oscar-nominee Kathleen Turner had joined the cast as Harry Dunne's (Daniels) former flame and the mother of his long-lost daughter, while Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence - who is reportedly a huge fan of the original film - was confirmed to cameo as a younger version of Turner's character. Also added to the ensemble around the same time were comic actor Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street), who is signed on to play twin characters, and TV actress Laurie Holden (The Walking Dead), who will portray the film's main antagonist.

Unfortunately, we don't have any updates on the script or the plot, but as we last heard, it will center on Harry and Lloyd's quest to track down Harry's daughter, who is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Once again, the two will embark on what is sure to be another memorable road trip and we can safely assume there will be plenty of (hopefully hilarious) speed bumps along the way.

Carrey and Daniels in Dumb and Dumber

Of course, we won't know if the returning creative team has struck lowbrow comedy gold again until we get a peek at a trailer, but Daniels has already teased that the sequel will top the funniest and raunchiest scenes from the first film. Considering he's the one holding a script, we'll have to take his word for the time being.
