Several new images from the DuckTales reboot have arrived, ahead of the show’s premiere this summer on Disney XD. While Disney produced many popular cartoon series in the 1980s and ’90s, perhaps none have proven to have as much enduring popularity as DuckTales. Premiering in 1987 and signing off in 1990, DuckTales produced 100 total episodes over the course of four seasons, and even proved to be a big enough hit that it spawned a theatrical spinoff film called DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp shortly before the end of its broadcast run. DuckTales also became a merchandising juggernaut, receiving multiple tie-in video games and comic book series.
In the current age of TV revivals, it’s not surprising that that trend has extended to animation, with a DuckTales reboot getting picked up by Disney XD back in 2015. The level of hype around the project was instant, even though the new art style was shown to be drastically different than the original, and the show’s premiere wasn’t set to happen until 2017.
With 2017 now upon the world – and a previous confirmation that the new DuckTales would premiere in the summer – a new report by EW confirms that DuckTales’ much anticipated reboot will finally hit screens in August, although an exact premiere date remains elusive. That same EW piece also contains a batch of new high-res preview images for the series, including both character photos and action shots. Check them all out in the gallery below.
Boosting the pop culture profile of the DuckTales reboot even more – season 1 of which will consist of 21 half-hour episodes and 2 hour-long specials – is a voice cast full of big Hollywood names. Leading the cast is former Doctor Who – as well as Jessica Jones’ nemesis Kilgrave – David Tennant, playing Scrooge McDuck. Also included are Danny Pudi (Community) as Huey, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Dewey, SNL’s Bobby Moynihan as Louie, noted comedian and voice actor Kate Miccuci as Webby, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as Gizmoduck. Also now confirmed (thanks to EW) are Jim Rash (Community) as Gyro Gearloose, Margo Martindale (The Americans) as Ma Beagle and Allison Janney (Mom) as Goldie O’Gilt, among others.
As anticipated as DuckTales (2017) is by fans, Disney XD seems to be just as confident in the series’ prospects to become a hit, having already renewed it for season 2 back in March. With the reboot set to retain the original’s classic theme song, here’s hoping that this new take on DuckTales proves just as resonant with today’s viewers.
DuckTales premieres in August 2017 on Disney XD.
