Last month at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard made an appearance on a panel to promote their upcoming revenge thriller Drive Angry 3D. They brought along some footage and it appears some of that footage has found its way online in the form of a teaser trailer.
Drive Angry 3D isn’t your typical revenge tale, as it brings in a supernatural element. It follows a father who’s escaped from hell (seriously!) to get revenge on the people who murdered his daughter and stole (and presumably still have) her baby. Do you really need anymore of the plot explained? I don’t – in fact the film had me with its blunt title.
As you’ll see from the teaser trailer, the film stick its tongue very far into its cheek, featuring the kind of hammy dialogue, over-the-top action and cliched “guy walking away from an explosion” shot that you’d expect find in one of those ’80s action movies starring Jean-Claude Van Damme or Dolph Lundgren, combined with a 70s stunt driving flick.
Take a look at the short teaser below:
-
As I said, even if it does have all the cliches of other action movies, I have a feeling that’s part of the point – the in-joke, if you will. Besides, Sylvester Stallone and his Expendables are doing something similar with their throwback macho-fest (which opens this Friday) and people are completely embracing the idea. Shouldn’t we give Drive Angry the same chance?
Word from our own Rob Frappier at the Comic-Con panel was that the 3D is pretty good (as the teaser boasts, it’s shot in 3D instead of being converted in post-production) although, like most 3D movies, it’s not exactly subtle. I can see it now – lots of cars driving (angrily) towards the camera and explosions spraying debris at you. That may be fun initially, but it gets old quickly.
Here’s hoping Drive Angry doesn’t rely too heavily on the 3D aspect… but I’m not holding my breath.
Drive Angry 3D speeds into theaters on February 11th, 2011.

Now thats the kind of crazy ass film I want to see!
Sounds like my drive home from work everyday.
awww yea cage back in action kickin ass
Cage is so much better than that. He can actually act. When he’s trying to be a bad ass is when it gets kind of funky. To me, he’s the kind of guy you just know, isn’t a bad ass
Im just waiting for him to say “Put the bunny back in the box..”
“Make a move and the bunny gets it” -Cyrus the Virus
Nicolas Cage is the man!
bahaha “lots of cars driving (angrily)”. a subtle additive that made the entire article awesome. love it.
Ah yes, the walking-away-while-something-blows-up shot. Cheesy indeed, but Nicolas Cage is great at that. Con Air and Face Off quickly come to mind.
