Word is still out as to whether or not the Judge Dredd reboot Dredd is going to be a worthwhile endeavor. The cast looks promising, led by up-and-coming actor Karl Urban (RED, Star Trek) as the titular Judge Dredd, who will battle it out against Game of Thrones star, Lena Headey as a ruthless gang leader. Also along for the fun is under-the-radar actress, Olivia Thirlby (Juno, No Strings Attached), who will play Dredd's young ward for a day of mayhem and bloodshed.

However, while the cast looks solid, director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) is a less encouraging sign for the film - and news that Travis walked from the project during post-production has been a big red flag on our radar.

Still, it can be said that in this rebooted version, Judge Dredd and the world of Mega City One he inhabits do look closer to the 2000 AD comic books that inspired the films. Safe to say: the 1995 Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone was something of a departure from the source material. For one thing: Dredd is not the type of guy to remove his helmet - not even to show off a million-dollar movie star face (which, we can probably assume, he wouldn't have in the first place). Thankfully, Urban has stated that he won't be breaking from character in that fashion.

Check out the new Dredd images and poster, which debuted over at JoBlo, followed by a recently-released synopsis for the film:

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute-turned-drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Dredd will be in theaters on September 21, 2012.
