dragonball evolution New Dragonball Movie Footage Leads To Slight Optimism

There’s all sorts of news buzzing about Dragonball Evolution.  First, there’s the release of clips of the dragon that appears to be Shenron.  Although there is no indication in the clip that the dragon is in fact Shenron, if you followed the cartoon Shenron was the dragon that was summoned once all the dragonballs were collected on Earth and can grant one wish to the summoner.

Until I saw these clips of from the movie I was pretty sure it was going to look like something a bored high school student did for their art school application project.  It goes without saying that all the footage released until now left me anticipating something worse than the love child of Speed Racer and The Goonies sequel.

To see the dragon clip, head over to io9.com.

In addition, the French trailer for the film was also released.  I suppose the PR people should have put this one out first because it also makes the film seem less terrible.  Perhaps it’s because the French language makes things seem infinitely sexier and more sophisticated, but it just might be because the film isn’t a total piece of crap.  Amazing.

io9 also reports a more detailed story line for the film via the film’s press book:

Goku’s quest – with nothing less than the fate of our world at stake – begins innocently enough in the backyard of his grandfather’s home, where Gohan is training the young man in some exotic martial arts moves. It is Goku’s 18th birthday, and Gohan’s gift to his grandson is a Dragonball, a small, round ball whose surface is smooth and pearl-like, but with a milky translucence that gives it depth. Four stars float inside the ball. There are only six others like it in the world, and it is said the seven Dragonballs together will grant the holder one perfect wish.Connected to the legend of the Dragonballs is Goku’s own mysterious past – he never knew his parents – as well as the coming solar eclipse, which superstitions mark as a sign of a coming apocalypse. Gohan promises to reveal all to Goku at the special birthday dinner Gohan is preparing for his grandson.

But Goku skips out on Gohan’s feast, to attend a party hosted by Chi Chi, a fellow student to whom Goku is drawn. As the two teens get to know one another, a tragedy at home is triggered by the arrival of a dark force – propelling Goku, Roshi, Bulma, Yamcha and Chi Chi into a race to collect all seven Dragonballs. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Goku will face the deadliest enemies on Earth, master a powerful force called Ki, which marshals the energy of the universe – and learn the truth of his incredible past…and of a potentially unthinkable future….

One of the first steps in Goku’s journey is to seek out Roshi, an elderly Master who completes Goku’s training, helps him unlock the secret of his past – and joins him in a quest to save the world. Roshi is unlike any Eastern Master you’ve seen before; he has an eye for the ladies and favors Hawaiian shirts….

The burgeoning relationship between Chi Chi and Goku comes from, in part, them being kindred spirits. “Chi Chi is drawn to Goku’s secret ability to fight,” says Chung. “She feels there’s something really special about Goku, and she’s able to bring that out in him.”

Another beautiful young woman joining Goku in his quest is Bulma, a scientist described in the manga as the “smartest girl in the world.” The film retains the manga character’s confidence, intensity and intelligence – and the fact that she knows exactly what she wants. And what Bulma wants is the Dragonball stolen from her father’s company. Wielding a laser-guided, high-tech magnum pistol and a Dragonball-tracker, Bulma will do anything to retrieve the five-starred Dragonball, which she thinks will supply an unlimited source of energy – and immense financial rewards.

In their search for the Dragonballs, Goku, Roshi and Bulma face their adversary, Lord Piccolo… Working with Piccolo is Mai, an exotic beauty tainted by malevolence. Her weapons of choice are throwing knives known as shiruken.

Finally, here’s the latest U.S. trailer for the film, which looks almost identical to the French version:

After reading all that and seeing the new clips I am less apprehensive about the fact that this movie might be a total disaster.  It’s really starting to take shape and look like it has the ability to be a Hollywood blockbuster instead of a total dud.

  1. I am looking forward to it. Been a DB fan since the early 90′s.

If a person goes to this movie and just expects to have some childish fun with some good action I don’t think it will disappoint.

  2. maybe its just like every other DB episode where they talk and do dumb S@#$, for 5 movies then they finally get to the fight. lol

  3. Look a lot better in this trailer. I’ll check it out.

  4. The 2nd video says it’s no longer available. I’ve always said that the movie doesn’t look as bad as everyone thinks. I’ve always been a DBZ fan, not DB, but I will go to see this. The main actor does give me pause, though.

  5. I think the movie actually looks pretty good. At first FOX wasn’t exactly complying with a lot of the factors that makes Dragonball, well, Dragonball. I believe FOX got an earful from fans in terms of the factors that were either missing or erroneous. Example: The Oozaru was supposed to be a reptilian looking character, but they made it into a giant ape; Picollo was supposed to be a pale green but was changed to the bright green tint he is known for. All in all, this movie shouldn’t disappoint. I;’m sure that it will bring the cheesy charm and action that Dragonball is known for.

Another thing, why would you assume “if” the dragon that was shown in the trailer might not be Shenron? What other dragonb in the series could possibly as important enough to earn a spot in the trailer, unless it was Shenron.

Anyway, looking forward to the film, I’m a huge fan :)

  6. @brick
its not that fox wasn’t listening, it was the fact that because this movie was highly anticipated, that every thing that was done on set, was released on the net. example: that early shot of ozaru goku, it was just a test, but it got released and a lot of idiots actually believed that was the final product. what I’m trying to say is if justin chatwin was taking a dump and it got photo shot and it would probably be all over the net. or any still shot of anything( pre production) it would probably be considered a final product by a bunch of idiots who don’t know how a movie gets made.

  7. I knew it, people are quick to judge. Sometimes i think its a good thing, and im pretty sure Fox listens to the fans, alot of things have changed because people have complained. Good for you Fox :)

  8. crap

  9. Care to explain why?

  10. taylor wants to b1tch for the sake of b1tching he´s a hater and he doesnt want to get in his head that this movie will be an AMAZING popcorn flick.

  11. This movie looks better and better everytime a new trailer is released.

It will definitively be a hit!

  12. @me
I wasn’t complaining. Oh, you mean the other Taylor. Sorry. 8-)

    @JoseMP
I don’t know if it will be a hit but it doesn’t look like a total bomb to me.

  13. I liked the latest trailer. Confirmed Oozaru or Great Ape, and Shenron. One of my top 5 anticipated 09 movies along with Watchmen, T4, Wolverine, and Star Trek.

  14. I liked the latest trailer. Confirmed Oozaru or Great Ape, and Shenron. One of my top 5 anticipated 09 movies along with Watchmen, T4, Wolverine, and Star Trek.

  15. I am A big fan of the shows and like all the fans that have been waitng to see a live action movie of the dragonball franchise and is a dream come true…But after seeing the pictures and trailers of the dragonball movie i have to say
IT BLOWS BIG MONKEY BALLS I wont waste my time and good hard earn money to see it and i would like to say thank you for ruining the best anime cartoon EVER

  16. Ok im sorry that was harsh…but still think it will suck

  17. i hope dragonball evolution is a good movie. goku’s costume looks cool. i wish i owned a costume like that. i cant wait to see bulma and chi chi in action. and mai looks hot as hell. the trailers have been very interesting. go dragonball evolution!!

  18. I have to say that I agree with what richard has said. I also have been a big fan of the dragonball series. I have seen the videos and pics from the movie and I am highly disappointed. I think that if the movie would have been done right then it could have been a big name block buster or even a movie franchise.(Spiderman, LOTR, Matrix) From what i have seen I think it will at best be a cult classic. Imagine how great this movie could be if say the Wachowski brothers had a hand in it. There is so much lost potential here.Maybe years from now somebody will realize it and make a remake

  19. I’m sorry to be negative but I don’t see this movie appealing to anyone but DBZ fans… I will see Street Fighter waaaaaay before I see this. : )

  20. Personal opinion: This movie is a joke.
They totally mess up the Dragonball
story. King Piccolo looks like a joke, Master Roshi is even worse, and let’s not talk about Goku or even Bulma.
They should have left DB alone.

  21. I’m a DBZ fan, not huge but I’ve seen my fair share of episodes. I don’t want to sound negative but this looks like another one of Hollywoods crap movies that could have been awesome. DBZ has a ton of great characters and storylines but this just looks cheap and is doomed to disappoint.

  22. I would have to drop this one in the toilet. Picolo has a sword. bulma has a machine gun. and Gokou’s kamehame wave looks like ken’s hadouken. very disappointing. If you are a real fan. you would know that there was a low budget LIVE action dragonball movie back in the days that i liked better than this one. So sorry but i am very disappointed.

  23. By the way.. the new street fighter movie wont do you guys any good either. Hollywood is cashing in and is destroying the anime genre. Get better actors, screenplay, etc. and please stop altering movies. play em as they are and give them more from what they expect without changing everything that the anime stood for.

  24. I won’t watch this even if they pay me to.

  25. UUAAAPPIIKK TENAN FILMNYA…. tapi apik film “cinta Fitri” gitu lhohh

  26. I know how you feel Athena, Lol wut?

  27. la la lalalalalallalalalalalalalalalalallalllllalallalalallallalllall tontos.

  28. este cel mai frumos film pe care l-am vazut si sper sa mai scoata altele sau continuarea de la el…
