What is anime, should stay anime. Dragonball Z just won’t work because it will feel like there are a bunch of “superman-like” characters. We all know that superman(2007) movie was not popular due to the heavy fictional and ridiclous plot. This movie will only appeal to past fans of the anime. Even then, the producers should capture the intensity of the action scenes as done in the anime. Plus there should be something in it for the adults . I watched every single episode of DBZ, as well as the animated movies, and I know that there are certain elements that will not work, such as the ridulously, repetive fight scenes , which only look good in the anime and not in live action. However, let us see, Micheal Bay is an excellent director for action films, he made Transformers-a kid’s flim, an excellent teen/kids/adults film-with incredible success. However, he better have a talented acting cast and a good story to work off, or this movie will be an astronomical flop like Speed Racer.

The pictures are suggesting a clever realistic approach, but there has to be a balance between fiction and non-fiction, just to keep up wit hthe themes and plots in the anime. Goku has to be shown to be a Saiyan-with the monkey’s tail, however, none of those space freaks should ever appear in the movie-just an example. The fighting should not be pathetic-maybe jeet kun do, cause it reflects the realistic approach-for the adults and the teens. Clever fight scenes.

Wow reading this I’ve seen someone say not only that Micheal Bay was a great director and that DBZ anime actions scenes looked great. Don’t get me started on Mr Bay but the DBZ actions scenes were terrible lol hell half of it was just a picture of a motionless guy with lines near him to give the illusion that he was moving fast. It wasn’t animation it was just a picture. DBZ was some of the worst art and animation in the history of the industry.

Daniel, from what you’re saying, it’s clearly obvious that you’ve only seen a couple episodes of the DragonBall. The animation gets much better as the series progresses into Z and GT. Maybe you should do more research before making general comments that have no validity. Thanks.

Actually I’ve seen plenty of episodes including GT my best friend is an avid fan of the series. Even in the newest episodes that they had produced they still had that basic same concept for combat. While I’ll admit the animation in general improved the combat was still very poorly animated.

Wow, in that first pic they managed to make Goku appear like an even MORE feminine version of Elijah Wood! This film is going to be a blemish on the careers of all involved. Chow Yun-Fat, how COULD you? If they had had true BALLS (Dragon, even) this would’ve been filmed in Asia, Goku would have a been a little asian kid (don’t give me that ‘He’s a Saiyin, not Asian’ crap, when the first ‘Dragonball’ story arc started, you could safely assume he was a small chinese kid with a monkey-tail.) and this would have been a bit more fantasy based. Instead, we’re stuck with a lame, Sci-Fi Channel Original Movie that’s about as faithful to the original storyline as a politician is to his wife! I’ll pass.

You know The Anime and the Manga are still out there for everyone that has trouble excepting any change within this beloved franchise.

Consider this too, if you want to make a movie that has the broadest appeal doesn’t it make sense, at least to the investors, that you use an international cast? Its a very risky move making it live action and they need all the advantage they can get. If you hate it but love the story, how hard do you think it was to sell to someone who never even heard of it? Just look who ponied up the cash? Still intransigent? Ok, how do you credibly make his alieness easily visible, put a tail on him? I think you would still be whining, because at this point in the story arc he had lost his tail! Ok not convinced, well we make him chinese, throw out all the stuff that looks unrealistic, flying, ability to use Ki blasts, mega strength now what have you got? At best you got the worst Indiana Jones crossed with any 3 martial arts films. Nothing would stand out about that movie. At least Justin looks something like Goku as drawn as a young adult. He has a slim nose and close set eyes, and a sort of clueless look which I think all the stories convey about him. Speaking of stories where could a story go that Goku hasn’t already been in Anime form. Live action is a chance to have a different take to the story. If you think; If it breaks even a little above cost financially, fan-dom will never get rid of the nagging distaste it will have for it, as it violates the source so much. Additionaly, we’ll have to endure sequels, well get in line. I think “GITS SAC” violates where “GITS” should have went with the story. It should have followed the Manga storyline. “TDTESS” should never have been remade it’s perfect just the way it is, and don’t even mention the words Batman sequel or Superman around here unless you want to wade through another 200-300 messages about them.. Now that I’ve got that off my chest, I’m gonna go and pop in “The Worlds Strongest” with Japanese dialog. There, a Chinese story with a Japanese voice, perfect..

You need awesome action sequences in this film, and micheal bay-a good action sequence director-not story director is the best in my opinion. He can also improvise on the action scences. After all, this is about martial-arts metahumans, He could use a martial arts choreographer to help him out with fight sequences and direct the power fighting himself. I still don’t think that they are sticking to the original story arc, I mean were not krillin and goku master roshi’s students together at the same time. They should use piccolo as he was one of goku’s first villian-who became his friend, sort of. I also hope that there is no cheesy romance between chi-chi and goku, as this should be full-blown action, that sort of thing could ruin it.It should be an awkward romance. And “old man”, I get your point about how the movie should have all the stuff that looks unrealistic, flying, ability to use Ki blasts, mega strength. This film should have a good dose of the fantasy stuff in it, but it’s got to be done really well-Micheal Bay could posibly do a good job of those action sequences.I just hope this fim is super intense like the villian holds chi-chi for ransome, along with small doses of comic relief. Acreative take while still maintaining the story arc will suffuce for a good film.

You may be right in saying that to “hate” a movie before even a trailer is released doesn’t make sense (I won’t use your word), but one can usually predict these things.

I’m not really following “Dragonball,” but there have been plenty of cases where based on who the director is, the script, what’s going on during production, the studio, etc. that it doesn’t take a crystal ball to predict that a particular movie will be awful.

There is nothing wrong with having hate for a film before even a trailer as long as you keep an open mind and are prepared to like it. How many of us hated the new terminator simply because of the director, but how many of us are starting to come around to it? T4 actually looks pretty good now. You have to make a judgment based on what you know at the time. If it’s stupid to hate it before you get a trailer than it’s equally as stupid to love it or predict 250M before even a trailer.

as an anonymous character designer for 20th century fox, personally i was hoping for goku to be a bit more buff. I’m sorta glad that they didnt keep the characters the way they look in the dragonball manga, because the whole story was a bit too crazy, so, goku looks, i imagine, how young goku and goku from dbz season 1 would look merged. i like the hair, the hair was done nicely. to compare him with the actuall goku… i dont know. the fore arms need to be bigger, the chest even more so. the muscles really need to be popping out of him.

chi chi….? hmmm… i wanna tap that. i really think that the guys did a good job on her.

Muten Roshi: way too young. surely they could have found an older martial artist to use, or at least some makeup. how can this roshi be the same old dirty womanising perverted turtle guy we all know and love???

well… heres a bit of inside information. alot of the original characters are being cut from the movie. heres a few that are left.

hm………. from the looks of these pics, it looks like Dragonball is going down the same path as the Dead or Alive movie. The designs, meh, the guy playing Goku looks more like Gohan. The clothes he’s wearing? They should only have him wear that blue gi (Goku was never the type of guy who worries about his wardrobe). Chow Yun Fat sounds good for Roshi, but looks nothing like him. Why no just give him a bald cap and a fake beard and some sunglasses? And where the hell is his shell? I may just watch it for the effects, the movie crew did the effects correctly, right? I would’ve liked it more if the Transformers crew worked on this. Michael Bay would be a perfect director for this, he loves explosions (and what is DBZ all about?) and Dreamworks can make anything happen.
But honestly, I think this is just an answer to the near-theory that Dragonball Z can never be live action. I bet they expect to see themselves in Guinness World records ‘09 for “Making an impossible movie”.

You no-doubt noticed what he looked like as he caught the piece of flooring he threw across the room in the same scene! Do you realize how much sacrifice and work Justine will have to go through if this continues into a series? He has to have somewhere to go physically. I bet Tobey Mcguire would open his eyes, if they talked about what its going take to keep him in the Gee.

On the one hand that trailer seems to promise a decent martial arts adventure.
On the other hand, it in no way looks like Dragonball.
Because of that, it doesn’t get me excited about it. If they tried to make it Dragonball, even if a crappy movie, that would at least make me want to see it. Agree on the parody look too.

This is why I keep getting annoyed about live action versions of anime. The people who do it really don’t seem to care about the shows or try to do them justice.

Gravatar
the old man said,

Josh, Piccolo has disguised himself have you noticed his antenna are slicked to his head! That video may be interim work too. The makeup has a curious look as if it was lighted a certain way it might change colors. That combined with processing may give the desired result. It’s “Dragon Ball” from the “Diamo” king Piccolo episodes. At this point while Goku is powerful he hasn’t trained to the extent that he did in the Z series. So he’s still got more to do.

Gravatar
Josh Langley said,

the old man said,
October 4th, 2008

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the only one translated to live action. A Z- movie will be much harder plus laden with effects. I’d foresee a budget of 150-200 million. “Dragon Ball” won’t be successful enough to convince investors to pony up. I think it will be good enough to break even after going to TV but that’s about it. So I just hope its a good popcorn flick. Most that visit this thread are haters, so I won’t have to deal with them while I enjoy the show. I’m the perfect audience member for this show. I’m pretty familiar with it but not an inflexible fan. I can roll with the changes, because I see some of the necessity. Now if you want to talk “Bebop” watch out, because I really hate the idea of Keanu playing Spike!!

Wess Wilson said,
October 4th, 2008

Ok, seeing the trailer, I came to a realization. This is only Dragonball, not DBZ, so this guy can get away with a skinny Goku (the hair should still be longer). However, I still believe they should be more true to the anime’s look: Bulma should have blue hair, still. The funny thing about Mai is that they can get a hot girl like that to play her, but Kasumi from DOA. And they Piccolo in a cave like most “bad guys”, they should’ve just kept him on that tower thing, would’ve made nice scenery. They just made this thing TOO “American”.

But, hey this is just Dragonball, let’s see what they do with Z *cough*get Dreamworks*cough*…..

Gravatar
the old man said,
October 4th, 2008

Yeah Josh I might have to join ya if they mess with Gurren Lagann.

Wess, maybe in 2020 or 2025, ‘maybe’ they’ll be able to do a live Z movie justice. IF they want to continue, and I don’t see why they would, they should focus just on “Dragon Ball.” Maybe do a story to follow this one to position the Piccolo story where it should be. Then bring in a new character to play a faction leader of the Red Ribbon army to fight against in a third. Have Dr. Gero go into hiding at the end to set up any future Z stuff that might come after. They just have to learn how to do it right, or find out the hard way that it’s a very self limiting concept, bringing Anime to live action. For the haters out there, hey boycott; My list includes “Bebop” and “The Day The Earth Stood Still.” You won’t have me booing the screen, talking loud in the seat behind you, or playing video games on my cell phone while watching the movie. I won’t be there to ruin it for you so do me the same courtesy, OK.

Gravatar
Wess Wilson said,
October 4th, 2008

Old man, it’s only hard to bring Anime to live action for those who didn’t really watch the anime in the first place. They can’t do a sequel since piccolo was the last Dragonball villain, then it was the tournament and then there was Z. So Z has to be the next sequel. The whole Red Ribbon was mid-dragonball and mid-DBZ.

The best way to translate animated stuff to live action movies is to have a director who knows the content like the back of their hand and not just by taking a few weeks off to watch the whole series or play it if it’s a game. Cliffy B., co-creator of Gears of War is the executive producer of the Gears of War movie and he’ll be doing some directing as well, so who can say the movie’s gonna suck? Game/Anime to Live Action ideas sound good because of the concept, but end up bad because of the director. If we had the right ones for these movies, we’d all be happy. Hey, suppose Michael Bay watched Dragonball/Z or if Akira Toriyama directed this Dragonball movie…..

Gravatar

This is going to be one of those movies that people will compare to what mortal kombat did when it made a movie. Yea i know..it was a game..and the story was terrible to begin with..what im refering to is the fact that it is tough to give a character in Any live action movie..the ability to fire stuff from his/her bare hands…

because people that are not huge DB or DBZ fans will have a hard time rationalizing it..and in live action movie adaptations ..almost every Director tries to make it as Real as possible to “trick” the audience into being sucked into the story..and not scratching their head saying “how does he do that”
the newer iron man and batman movies are believable because they explain how things work..and have equipment to do their tricks

however as a DBZ fan i hope this movies Director James Wong does it true justice-
-in the trailer it looks like they are using alot of Ki blasts etc..
so i do hope that they throw the realistic idea out the window..and just stick to the original story..”crosses fingers”

Well Marcus all we have is a few little windows into this movie and that’s it.
Here check this fan made short.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8hWQ_j4_EE

Is this what you want “Dragonball” to look like? I don’t.

The movie just about has to be different to draw a more mature crowd. Fandom is fractured about anime to live action.
The people at the top are of a mindset that, fans of the original stuff will see it no matter what. However, people that might look at a trailer and see something too over the top, won’t bother. So the changes are deemed necessary. If you’ve seen “A Scanner Darkly” you know that they could do what you and so many others want. It just “doesn’t play well in Peoria” as the old saying goes.

There are around 428 episodes of this anime franchise and currently 12 movies. Thirteen if you count the first attempt at a live action adaptation. Plus, you no doubt heard that another anime movie is being drawn up, but as far as I’ve heard Toriyama san won’t be involved. It’s pretty much played out, and I don’t see where the fans think the story can go. It’s been everywhere. More villains to fight are straw stories, it takes more than that to be entertaining. Even ECW sees that, with all their little dramas. I can’t even bear to watch it. It’s so repetitious.

Yeah..my hopes are that this movie will be good..and like “the old man” was saying, you just have to have an open mind.
From what i hear..Picolo just painted himself white to blend into the human crowds…
and hopefully Bulma at some point in the movie will probably dye her hair blue…and guess what…Krillin will show up..

I hope at least, if not…whatever..im still going to watch it

i just hope they do not Butcher the story line

I’m happy if it’s a respectable movie. It won’t be a block buster and I never imagined it would be. I think of it like a normal TV series, in that it has to find itself a place and settle some unknowns. Even excellent movies can be chopped to pieces or just have a limited release and then shelved.

Just to put a little more on the site in the way of theories, here’s a couple more.

1. The decision was made that given the history of the Namekians and their need for sunlight, Demon Piccolo, being at once old and imprisoned for many centuries has a faded skin tone. Circumstances in the story will change this, and we will see the more familiar Piccolo as the movie develops.
So you see, a lot of roaring over nothing. It’s just a plot device.

2. The clothing choices and coloration lean heavier on the Manga. So if your like me, and saw it first in Manga form, it will look familiar, and the same thing can be said about street clothes.

If you read the Manga there are plenty of instances where Goku, Krillin, Roshi, and Bulma wear all kinds of outfits. It wasn’t out of line for Roshi to be a little vain too, if you know what I mean.

3. The story is changed somewhat, however all of the important elements are there for this section of the story. Rumors have said that Krillin has a short fight scene and others say, he’s not in the story. If the later is true, I think it might have been decided that it was important to keep the story tight. He will no doubt show up, if they do a sequel, as he’s too central and a beloved character to just toss.

Quite frankly I think the franchise would do better if they do a sequel with Piccolo jr. and Kame next, rather than ramp up to a Z film. I guess it would depend on whether or not the rumor is true, that Gohan is born at the end of this movie. :-p

That is NOT the real trailer it’s just for liscencings and marketing and to introduce the characters we were not meant to see it, the real trailer is coming out with the day the earth stood still, december 12 and it got delayed due to all of the special effects that are in the tailer. trust me the trailer is going to be Super Sick!!
