It was seven years ago that Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog set the internet aflame and fans have been waiting patiently for a sequel ever since. With how unbelievably busy those behind the first installment are with other projects, it may take another writer's strike before we see a second series.

A sequel to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has always been the plan and creator Joss Whedon has been discussing it publicly for some time now. Supposedly, there's already a title and songs written for Dr. Horrible 2 and last we heard the sequel was set to film in the summer of 2012. Obviously, that didn't happen.

In the latest issue of EW the magazine debates the odds of a few fan-favorite shows ever returning and they reached out to Jed Whedon (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), composer of Dr. Horrible's songs, for an update. Here's his statement:

"We know we have spoken publicly about a sequel in the near distance and our passion to create it, and I promise we have not been insincere. Horrible is still one of our favorite creations by humans who were also us. We have many songs written and the plot outlined, but needless to say, we’ve been busy. Joss has had a hectic couple of years and is in the middle of the busiest year of his life, as is Zack and as are we. Also the actors have other things they’re acting in, I think. So the future is uncertain, our passion remains. DH2 will exist, in some format or another, at some point in the future. Unfortunately, the when is still unclear."

So, Dr. Horrible 2 will still happen, someway, somehow. And it's interesting to imagine what Jed could mean by, "in some format or another." Way back when Joss mused a Dr. Horrible sequel could be a feature film. Perhaps that's still an option and it could be part of the reason for the delay. Then again, if the songs are already written they may simply record an album, possibly with a reading of the script like a radio play. Fans will likely accept whatever they choose to do as long as they make that decision fast.

To say those responsible for Dr. Horrible are busy is a gross understatement. Joss Whedon, as we all know, is neck deep in The Avengers: Age of Ultron (and helping manage Marvel's other films). Jed Whedon and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen are busting their butts over at ABC for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Zack Whedon is working on The Red Road (starring Jason Momoa) for the Sundance Channel and just recently began writing Serenity: Leaves on the Wind, a six-issue series for Dark Horse Comics picking up events after the end of the film, Serenity.

As for the onscreen talent, Nathan Fillion continues to have obligations for his hit TV series, Castle. And though it's unsure whether or not her character will actually return in a sequel, Felicia Day is busy managing her media empire - Geek & Sundry - as well as appearing on Supernatural.

In fact, out of everyone it's star Neil Patrick Harris who looks to soon have the freest schedule once How I Met Your Mother wraps for its ninth and final season. And perhaps from there is where Dr. Horrible fans should look for that silver lining. That is, assuming NPH doesn't jump at the chance to do Smurfs 3.
