The unfortunate situation of this sequel is that Richard Kelly isn’t directing it and isn’t writing the screenplay. It would be like Cloverfield 2 not being directed by J.J. Abrams. I’m sure we would all feel different if he was involved more on this project.

I share your sentiment. I am terribly disappointed in this news. Donnie Darko, as mysterious as it is, is consummate. It is NOT the kind of film you make a sequel to. Somehow it just seems to kill the mystique of the original. And what an imbecilic plot for the “sequel”. What a shame.

Great movies like Donnie Darko aren’t meant to be made into sequals, they have a great story and a great message but just for one movie. It’s like if they tried to make a sequal to Fight Club or Se7en.

Donnie Darko is in my top THREE all-time favorites, and I think it’s interesting that someone is trying their hand at a sequel. I’m excited to check it out. That having been said, I am AGAINST the idea of a sequel, and think, like everyone else, it’s totally ridiculous, irrelevant, and uncalled for. However, the cool thing (for me) is that I don’t have to associate the sequel with the original film. The fact that it’s a different writer/director to me almost means I can place it in its own universe, kind of like the Michael Keaton Batman, and the Christian Bale Batman. This sequel will be just a movie for me to check out, and won’t affect my love for the original and ONLY true Darko film.

thank you Ross, because of you I’m gonna watch Donnie Darko tonight I actually forgot how good of a movie it was. Sorry if I sounded rude, it’s my time of the month(to pay my bills) lol get it? Ok sorry, I had to. I also agree with Greenknight, it was like taking a trip. And you got sucked in right to the movie. All I’m saying is that no matter what they do, nothing will ever take away from this near perfect film.

Donnie Darko was one of the best “trips” I had ever taken while watching a movie…I don’t think it needs a sequel nor does it need anything else..It was a movie that explained how our life makes twists and turns and how some people are unable to understand what life throws at them and how our perception of what we experience can alter the choices we make…and how your destiny is your destiny….inescapable & unrelenting..A truly brilliant piece of filmmaking…

In a way it does take away from the original. The original movie is still great, in my top five, too, but now there’s this dark shadow hanging over it. Now you can’t watch Donnie Darko without remembering they made a crappy sequel.

“Direct-to-dvd” isn’t always bad. White Noise 2 is superior to original theatrical release, for instance. But at least since S. Darko will go straight to DVD less people will watch it.

But I totally agree with you. I love Donnie Darko and you can’t make a sequel for it. Even if by some stroke of blind luck S. Darko winds up being good, it’s still completely unnecessary and shouldn’t exist.

I still dont get why alot of people get butt hurt over crappy sequels or remakes, Donnie Darko is one of the best movies ever made, nothing is gonna change that, not a sequel, not a remake, not a musical! You cant blame people for trying to milk something, its their job, and if they think they are gonna make money why wouldnt they? Same goes for GI Joe, and Dragonball. Nothing is ever gonna change the fact that they were good cartoons/anime. If they made a Scarface sequel(lol) it wouldnt make the original any less good. Basically, i didnt mind S. Darko coming out, especially if it turned out to be good.
