Last month Screen Rant reported on the rumour that the characters of the Black Widow and Hawkeye would not only appear in Iron Man 2 but would be significant characters as opposed to just typical cameos. Well it appears things may be moving past simply rumour for at least one of the characters – as a certain actress is apparently in talks to play the Black Widow.
Emily Blunt, who you may know from the likes of The Devil Wears Prada, The Jane Austen Book Club and Charlie Wilson’s War amongst others, is reportedly in talks to portray Natasha Romanoff, the Soviet super spy who doubles as the character the Black Widow.
If the negotiations go well and she gets the part she would join recently new (possible) cast members Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell. And just as a reminder the sequel will be again directed by John Favreau and see the return of Robery Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow, along with the new addition of Don Cheadle who, as you probably already know, has replaced Terrence Howard.

Marvel Studios refused to comment on the rumour so for now take this, as you should with all rumours, with a grain of salt.
I can’t say I’m all that familiar with any of Blunt’s previous work – I’ve just noticed her pop up every now and then since her first role back in 2003. Although her relatively unknown status may change after she stars alongside Benicio Del Toro in the upcoming film The Wolfman.
As someone who’s not a big comic-book reader (especially not of Iron Man – I haven’t read a single comic book featuring him) I hadn’t heard of the character of the Black Widow before these rumours started to come out [Please dear readers, forgive him - Ed.] and so I can’t then say whether or not Blunt would be a good choice for the role.
But are there any more informed comic-book fans out there who can say whether or not Blunt would make a good Black Widow?
Production on Iron Man 2 is to start production this Spring and is set to hit theatres on May 7th 2010.

If she can pull off the accent, she’ll be fine. I don’t know her from her previous work, but she certainly has the looks to play the part. (Anyone else see that pic SuperHeroHype put up with their version of this story? Damn)
Widow was a kick a**, smoking hot russian babe. All you need are the chops to pull off a russian accent and a hot bod.
I have a wait and see attitude about this.
I wish her Luck though.
Not really excited about Black Widow but i guess she can pull it off. Would much rather hear some news about Hawkeye. He is a much more interesting character
I would have thought there would have been a attempt to see what Milla Jovovich is up to, but I can see Blunt in this. With a slight bit of cardio Blunt is spot on.
BTW, since Black Widow *is* in this, I wonder if Mickey Rourke is Crimson Dynamo after all. (#2, I believe)
Slap some spandex on her, give her some guns and lets get this thing rollin’!
@INK
Just give her Kate’s smoking Underworld suit and gear; add a Blackwidow belt buckle.
I’m sold. Emily Blunt is a on the express lane of up-coming very talented, attractive actress. Just curious to see how skilled her martial arts and action talents are.
I’m embarrassed to say I saw “The Devil Wears Prada,” but with that out of the way, I’ll say that I think this lady has the acting chops and look to pull off the role of “Black Widow.” I’m just not clear why the Black Widow figures into the “Iron Man” sequel. I collected a few “Iron Man” issues growing up, but not enough to figure out the connection.
Mickey Rourke would be a good crimson dynamo, but I don’t really want to see CD in the next film. Too much metal on metal between the 2 movies. I wouldn’t have a problem with seeing it, but I think other people might, and I want this movie to be successful so they make plenty more sequels!
I think the Whiplash rumor is a little more realistic, although I think Whiplash sucks so I’d be disappointed. I’d rather see them incorporate Hydra/A.I.M in there somehow, so we could see IM throwing down with a bunch of footsoldiers all at the same time. They could include the Betatron Bomb storyline, but they’d have to solve all that crap going on with Sam L Jackson’s negotiations (Sign him already Marvel!)
Just my 2 cents
I watched The Devil Wears Prada
and she had a british accent i believe, wonder if that will be good or bad.
Emily Blunt is okay, but Kate Beckinsale is my pick of the crop to really nail the role because she is highly commited in her role , has a more identical look of Black Widdow
from the comics and Robert and her have dated-so I have heard from friends. Also Kate did do plenty of martial arts and will fit the age bracket of most of the current Iron Man cast. And if she nailed an American accent in Click , then she definetly what it takes to nail a Russian accent. Just an opinion.
I also would not mined seeing Hilary Swank have a shot at the role. But she would probably turn down the role.
i guess she’s ok until i see the wardrobe 4 the film.
but hey if the do indeed bring in
Miky R. as Crimson Dynamo, then hope fully they will bring in Titanium man.
-those who read the comics will understand.
and he would be a good War machine antaginist.
even thou Titanium man is powered by a mini Nuclear reactor.
Honestly, Fred, I think I’d pay money to just watch Kate Beckinsale read the phone book, but I think she’s gotten too big for the kind of supporting role the Black Widow will likely be. Of course, any excuse to see Beckinsale in a catsuit…
I want to go back to something that was attributed to Favreau — “We’ve come up with a way to get lots of armored adversaries in this movie” — I am paraphrasing that.
Doesn’t that plot sound like Armor Wars?
Zipper, if he said that, then yes… that sounds a lot like “Armor Wars” to me. That worries me a bit since they’d be combining an awful lot of storylines from the comic book to accomplish that and still have the Mandarin as the primary villain. However, they might use a lot of armored villains popping up as a lead-in to a third movie where they then do the Armor Wars storyline.
Personally to me, this is all starting to sound like the train wreck that Spiderman 3 was. Raimi tried too hard to give some well known villains air time and managed to not give respect to any of them, and made a pretty crappy movie in the meantime.
I don’t want Favreau to do the same thing. I know with comic there is a lot of source material, enough to keep a studio/director/producer busy for a lifetime, but there’s no point in squeezing every popular villain into one movie…especially a sequel at that.
I’ll agree with Dan (Truth On Cinema) that it seems like too much is going into this movie. But, we don’t know how much of this stuff is true. If all the rumors are true, then we have reason to worry. Generally though, I trust Favreau
I’m down for some Armor Wars. That would be pretty cool. But it should be a third movie. Maybe mention the villains in some news footage or some discussion btwn characters, or show one or two of them as they are currently donning the armor for the first time.
prtfvr is going to laugh at me, but I am looking at that drawing of Black Widow and I just realized something. That weapon she’s holding is a FN FAL. I have one of those, it’s my favorite rifle! lol
Whoever drew it obviously had one or a picture of one in front of him because he got the details down.
The most distinguishing feature is the big pivot screw right above and behind where the magazine sits. I love that weapon.
But that fact is kind of strange in that the FN FAL is a NATO weapon back during the cold war. Black Widow is supposed to be Russian, yet she is using the weapon nicknamed “The Right Arm of the Free World” as in non-communist… Every member of NATO adopted the FAL except the USA that adopted the M14 as their full powered battle rifle. So the FAL was used by well over 90 countries, but none of them Russian or related to the Soviet Union. So someone made a mistake drawing her with that rifle, lol.
We’ll just pretend that’s AFTER she defected from the USSR…
