Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn Returning for ‘Dodgeball 2′

Ben Stiller’s film career – perhaps more so than his contemporary comic actors – has managed to capture the attention of moviegoers of all ages. On the one hand, he is known to kids for the Madagascar and Night at the Museum franchises, while older fans remember his darker, more satirical work in films like Tropic Thunder, Zoolander and There’s Something about Mary.

The announcement of Zoolander 2 seemed to indicate that he was ready to revisit some of his older-skewing material, but that film appears to have stalled as Stiller wraps production on his remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (which is already earning positive buzz). Now – with his return as Derek Zoolander apparently on hold – Stiller looks like he’s ready to revisit another one of his most memorable characters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is moving forward on a sequel to Stiller’s 2004 comedy DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story.  That film starred Stiller as fitness guru White Goodman whose corporate gym threatens the existence of a rundown competitor run by Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn). The two end up entering a dodgeball tournament to settle the score and decide the fate of Peter’s gym.

The sequel will be written by Clay Tarver – best known for the 2001 thriller Joy Ride – and will reportedly feature the Stiller and Vaughn characters joining forces against an even bigger threat. Stiller will also produce through his Red Hour Films production company.

There’s no word at this point on who will play the common enemy that Stiller and Vaughn’s character will unite against, but given how often members of the so-called “Frat Pack” – the nickname granted to the group of funnymen that includes Stiller, Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Jack Black, among others – are keen to appear in each other films, don’t be surprised if a familiar face joins the cast.

From a financial standpoint, DodgeBall 2 (or whatever the official title ends up being) is a no-brainer, as the original film earned $168 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. To many moviegoers, the film – thanks in no small part to Stiller’s ridiculously over-the-top villain (practically identical to his villainous fitness guru from Heavyweights) – remains one of the more enjoyable comedies of the 2000s. The fact that the sequel won’t hit theaters until at least a full decade after its predecessor has probably only whetted fans’ appetites for more.

The sequel would also nicely offset the failure of Stiller and Vaughn’s last onscreen collaboration, The Watch, which was among last summer’s biggest disappointments. In fact, both actors seem intent to recapture their past successes. While Zoolander 2 remains a possibility for Stiller, Vaughn is set to join his Wedding Crashers co-star Wilson in The Internship in June.

Still, the question remains if DodgeBall 2 can recapture the magic of the original film and both lure back longtime fans and attract new ones.

  1. I didn’t find Dodgeball very funny the first time I watched it, but last year I watched it again and laughed so many times. It really is hilarious. Don’t know if I was hungover the first time I saw it or what.

    • Its like a fine wine. It gets better as it gets older.

  2. i vote for will Ferrell as the villain or even channing tatum for his comedic performance or jason segal

    • jason segal and paul rudd on a dodgeball team together

      • Comedy GOLD right there.

    • i could see segal or paul rudd

  3. loved dodgeball. its up there with zoolander. I could see someone like will farrel being the villian. especially another over the top villian like in zoolander. I wonder if they will have a rocky-type montage at the beginning since last we saw of white he was about 400 lbs.

  4. This movie is sooooo overdue! That has to be one of my favorite movies ever!!! Laughed so much the first time i watched it and the jokes get me every friggin time! XD

  5. Ha! Enjoyed the first one. Hopefully, it doesn’t disappoint (as most sequels do).

Looking forward to it (as well as Zoolander 2).

CLANK! as wrench hits your face…

  6. Loved the first one, but I really don’t think a sequel is necessary. I hope I am wrong, but I don’t think this movie will be nearly as good as the first one.

  7. They should call it… Dodgeball Z

    • I see what you did there.

    • Ha! Would the third be called Dodgeball GT or would they dare go the Dodgeball Z Kai route?

  8. They should make a sequel to Heavyweights! BUUUDDDYYY!!!

  9. Ive waited for this for so long!!!
White Goodman is my fav Stiller character, so i cant
wait to see more of him :) Bring back Mee’Shell too!!!

    • And his scooter. I almost peed my pants laughing when he pulled up on that thing.

  10. Wow, it looks like the next few years are gonna be full of comedy sequelitis. I’m not excited about any of these to be honest

  11. Will they include a Lance Armstrong cameo with a twist on the “believe in your self” matter?

  12. Great news. White “Nobody makes me bleed my OWN blood” Goodman was actually a very underrated Stiller character.

I actually preferred Dodgeball to Anchorman, they came out around the same time I remember, but watched them both again last year or so, and I found myself laughing a lot more during Dodgeball.

HAHA, “f***ing Chuck Norris”, I can’t wait for this now.

  13. Amazing!! Will Ferrell would be amazing but so would Segel or Jack Black. Bring on Tenacious D and a few others as a singing/dodgeball playing group, that would be amazing!

  14. Good news.

  15. Lance Armstrong as the villain :)
    and there’s always David Hasselhoff.

    • Heh, Lance Armstrong. Nice idea!

  16. Jack Black would be perfect to play the guy that they have to team up against.

  17. The funny thing.

I play in a Dodgeball League.

My team is known as The Dastardly Dodgers.

Problem with our 9 Man Team….The Smallest person is 6’3 220.

  18. What about Chuck Norris being the villain? Remember Stiller ending the movie with “f***ing Chuck Norris”.

  19. I loved Dodgeball! I hope this all comes together!

  20. Oh yeah, “cram it up your cram hole LaFleur !” My favorite line from Dodgeball.

  21. Too bad the original writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber isn’t returning. His director’s commentary was really insightful.

As long as they bring back Gary Cole and Jason Bateman as Cotton McKnight and Pepper Brooks, I’m game.

Cotton McKnight: Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to witness the greatest happening in sport: sudden-death dodgeball.
Pepper Brooks: Pepper needs new shorts!

    • Classic!!!

  22. Will Ferrel would be a perfect over the top villain for the movie to compete with Stillers character but I could also see Owen Wilson coming in as the sauve “Everybody loves me and my gym more than you” kind of character that Vaughn and Stiller can’t stand.

  23. Will Ferrell as the bad guy …

  24. I could also see a girl as the villain.

    Jane Lynch
    Melissa McCarthy
    Kristen Wiig
    Christina Applegate
    Courteney Cox
    Kat Dennings
    Alyson Hannigan

  25. I would love to see Jerry Seinfeld or Ray Romano or Jimmy Fallon as a bad guy. But would also love to see a female lead bad girl: Gwyneth Paltow or Sally Field or Susan Sarandon. These nice guys could do a good bad person!!

  27. Just make sure to bring back Cole and Bateman as the ocho commentators, Hilarious! Steve Carell would be a great villan

  28. The villain should be Adam Scott!!

  29. Adam Sandler would make a great villian! He has already played one in his career (Little Nicky)!
