‘Doctor Who’ Set Photos: Character Return Confirmed & First Look at the New Companion!

2 years ago by

Fans of BBC’s hit time-travelling space drama Doctor Who have a lot to look forward to this upcoming season, including the return of a few popular characters from last season. This article contains mild SPOILERS for Doctor Who season seven – so if you do not want to be spoiled turn away now!

Madame Vastra the sword-swinging Silurian vigilante (Neve McIntosh) and her human companion Jenny (Catrin Stewart) have recently been seen on set despite the ambiguity of their return.

Just last month McIntosh played down media rumors that she would be making an appearance this season saying via Twitter “Just to say I have no idea WHAT the Star is talking about! No-one’s asked me [to come back] ” In reply to a fan inquiry about the possibility of Madame Vastra’s return in any season, McIntosh responded: “I wish… Still thinking up plot lines to pitch to mr Moffat.

Check out the new set photos featuring new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman and the return of Madame Vastra and Jenny:

The romantic team of Madame Vastra and Jenny became hugely popular among Who-fans after their first appearance in season six episode ‘A Good Man Goes to War‘ – with fans even asking Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat for a spin-off with the duo. Moffat addressed this by saying he considered the spin-off idea, but he just wouldn’t have the time – but he also had this to say on the character’s future:

“I think I might revisit them, they were great fun to write… I was pleased by the reaction to them, but not surprised. They really cut through as characters, given how little screentime they had. I certainly wouldn’t be averse to them returning. It’s just a thing that worked, isn’t it? I love that Victorian setting, and having kicked it out of Sherlock Holmes I can always kick it in somewhere else!”

Also making his apparent return is Sontaran nurse Commander Strax (Dan Starkey) – who also made his debut in ‘A Good Man Goes to War’. While still not officially confirmed to be Strax (as all Sontaran look the same) but the non-threatening butler’s suit and lack of a Sontaran army suggest it’s likely him – despite the events of his last appearance. Madame Vastra, Jenny and (possibly) Strax will return in the second part of the seventh season which is to air in 2013, in an episode written by Mark Gatiss (BBC’s Sherlock).

The newly-released photos also feature The Doctor’s new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman in action. Rumored to be named “Clara” – the new companion may appear to be an average girl, but Moffat claims she will be “very different” from the others, causing speculation she may be a surviving Time Lady or some sort of android. The dark funeral-style clothing of this episode are also fueling rumors of Amy and Rory dying – but ultimately  Madame Vastra’s stylish black veil is most likely to hide the fact she’s a giant lizard woman walking around Victorian England.

  1. I believe they are trying to make episodes to explain in more detail how Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Sontaran nurse Commander Strax met the Doctor. Since they had never before been mentioned ( unless they were in the older Doctor Who series). (**SPOILER if you haven’t seen the end to ‘A Good Man Goes to War’**) In the episode Commander Strax dies, so if it is him in the new season it would have to be between where he met the Doctor and before the Doctor called for his assistance. I am excited to see the new season with the conclusion of the Ponds story and the new companion. CAN’T WAIT! :)

    • Hmm I see your logic, and I was thinking the same thing – but the meeting stories of both Commander Strax and Madame Vastra told would mean there would probably be a lot more Sontarans and Silurian on set, which there weren’t.

Instead of an origin story it could just be a version of Commander Strax before he bit it. Gotta love that time travel!

  3. “The dark funeral-style clothing of this episode are also fueling rumors of Amy and Rory dying”

    Interesting but wrong.

The above episode has nothing to do with Amy and Rory and is from the later half of season 7, after the Christmas special which is the introduction of Clara, and well after the fifth episode of season 7 which says goodbye to Amy and Rory in New York via the Weeping Angels.

  4. I sincerely hope she is NOT The daughter of River and the Doctor as that would be beyond disgusting. I know Moffat foolishly thinks the Time Vortex could affect someone inside the Tardis but that is nonsense! The Tardis Force Field PREVENTS this from happening! So that isn’t possible! And yes, I know it’s ALL fiction but just because something is fiction, doesn’t mean it can’t be logical! That’s just ignorant thinking.
So the ONLY way Time Lord DNA could have fused with River Song is if the Tardis Matrix infused her with it! And the ONLY Time Lord DNA The Tardis has access to is THE DOCTORS! So the Doctor and River are Genetically RELATED!! As in Father/Daughter or Brother/Sister BUT they ARE related so ANY Romance between the two IS INCEST!! And last time I checked, not only is that EXTREMELY GROSS it is also highly ILLEGAL!! But I have a feeling Moffat is so ignorant that he has no idea what he has done. He is that clueless.
And River Song IS a Sociopath! That is not open for debate! It is NOT a matter of “Opinion” it is a scientific FACT! She fits the profile almost to a T! And Sociopaths can SORT OF fall in love. Actually they become deeply obsessed with one person. In this Case, The Doctor!
And Sociopaths HAVE saved lives, Like Real Life Serial Killer Ted Bundy once saved the life of a 3 yr old boy. Saved him from drowning! So is he now a hero?! Of course not! Anymore then River Song is a hero just because she saved the life of the Doctor! She is a puke and a cold blooded killer! Those saying otherwise are either very ignorant or very young.
I am NOT looking forward to this new series. It looks as dreadful as last seasons! In fact I am most likely going to ignore it! Moffat has turned a once great Family Friendly Show into a vulgar, tacky grotesque Soap Opera in Space! His laughable stories are NOT complicated! They are overly-contrived and cluttered! As one British Gent put it brilliantly “It is too adult for children and too childish for adults!” AMEN1 Couldn’t agree more!
And what will happen in the laughable wanna-be “50th Anniversary”?! We discover that Moffat has indeed created a child of incest, and that she was given a fob watch in order to escape the Time War?! And that she holds the key to saving Gallifrey or something equally ridiculous?! It won’t be a true anniversary special! It will only spend about 20% of the time acknowledging the Classic series and the other 80% will be Moffat paying homage to Moffat! YUCK! Talk about a waste of film! I’ll stick to Fanfic! Most of them are a lot more fun and a lot more logical! And I’ve yet to find one that has a gross incestuous story! Bleah!

  5. ummm is anyone going to mention the fact that maybe clara is 10.5 and roses daughter. he wouldnt know who she was when he meets her. he never knew who river was, she had to tell him. i was hoping for the 50th anniversary they would bring back david instead of tom baker because then it would make sense. if they brought back david and billie for a special and the doctor not only gets to see rose again but hed find out that clara was their daughter, and in a sense his daughter. or maybe shes jenny, the dna clone of 10 and shes regenerated. i guess well have to see their chemistry and they way they act towards each other. because if he treats her like martha or donna or even amy well know theres no romance going on and it would leave room for the whole 10.5 and roses daughter theory or the jenny theory. AND moffat would totally do something like that. he loves to leave us on the edge of our seats going nuts trying to figure out whats really going on. he wrote the river song story line. he wrote silence in the library and forest of the dead. those two episodes are nuts. you would never guess that any of the things that happened in them would happen at all. hes a genius.

  6. I absolutely love your website.. Excellent colors & theme.
Did you develop this website yourself? Please reply back as I’m looking to create my own site and want to find out where you got this from or exactly what the theme is called. Many thanks!
