Doctor Who Twelfth Doctor Rumors Doctor Who Season 8 Wont Premiere Until Autumn 2014

The waiting game for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special and for this years eventful Christmas Special – which will see the end of Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor and the rise of Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor – may seem unbearable, but it may pale in comparison to the wait that Whovians will have to endure following those two episodes.

According to a new report, season 8 of the regenerated series will return in the autumn of 2014, meaning that we are more than a year away from the next season of Doctor Who and a full look at the new Doctor.

Here’s a bit from The Guardian’s Top 100 profile of Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat.

Doctor Who may not be quite the force it was when it returned with Christopher Eccleston and in its David Tennant heyday in the UK, but has a growing audience in the US on cable channel BBC America.

It will not return next year until the autumn, giving it plenty of time to recharge batteries. And what better way to do that than with a new Doctor?

Previous reports had indicated that the next season/series would bow in August, so this is a bit of a push-back – meaning fans will have to endure an even greater delay following the more than six month delay between the season 7 finale and the anniversary special’s November air-date. Does the show really need that much battery re-charging?

Granted, this last season didn’t net the critical accolades like some of Moffat’s past work on the show, but with the ceaseless speculation and all the buzz generated by the dawn of a new Doctor, one would think that the BBC and Steven Moffat would be chomping at the bit to push the show out to the world as soon as is possible to capitalize on the vaunted announcement.

sherlock season 3 start date Doctor Who Season 8 Wont Premiere Until Autumn 2014

Trouble is, Moffat is a busy fellow thanks to his Sherlock commitment, and with that show presently filming its 3rd season, some will likely repeat an oft-uttered criticism against Moffat – particularly among American fans who are used to more consistency: Moffat has too many irons in the fire, making Doctor Who less than his top priority at various times.

Whether Moffat’s mixed focus and busy schedule is at the heart of this specific delay is not known, but it is reasonable to assume that the show would likely enjoy a more consistent schedule if not for his side work. Still, there are plenty of people who clearly think that these sacrifices are worth it – particularly the BBC, who collects gains from both Who and Moffat’s Sherlock success – but at some point, even they have to realize that anticipation can turn to anger if the tease is proceeded by a great expanse of time and little else.

  1. I would really like between the eleventh Doctor and River Song
happen as the tenth doctor and rose tyler that can grow old together
and maybe start a family and this would be the reward for so much suffering
I know I’m a sentimentalist but I like stories with a happy ending

    • But the doctor doesn’t like endings!

    • honestly I feel you especially the River Song Saga I just finished watching the Christmas Special (2013) and before that the episode titled “The Name of the Doctor” and I loved how he finally showed his fans how he truly felt about River Song (a.k.a Melody Pond)however I am a bit confused supposingly she died and is uploaded on a computer however, she tells the doctor if Clara was dead how is she still there and then she said “spoilers” so does that mean she will come back? or does that mean they said their final “see you laters”? honestly I am still mind boggled I just really hope they bring her back because her character is truly one of a kind and that is something special.

  2. I wish the wait was shorter but i do look forward to the new Dr. But i do think Matt Smith had another year or so. I guess they want to go with an older guy this time. I will totally miss River.

But who really bothers me is Clara! I do not think she makes a good companion at all! I do not know if it is her acting or the script for her character or what but she simply needs to go!

    • Clara rules, and I hope Jenna Coleman is on the show for years to come.

    • Clara is simply the greatest companion of the new series! She’s not a whiny co-dependent crybaby, she’s not bitchy, she’s not preachy, she’s not bossy, and she is genuinely useful… she reminds me of Ace just a bit. I think they threw away a lot of potential killing off Lynda and Astrid just as they were set up to be great companions, but Clara makes up for it.

    • Please Doctor not Dr.. To wait until August IS CRIMINAL. If you are too busy (read greedy) then give it up to someone who can do it in a more timely manner.

    • Agreed, I feel Clara is a really weak, under developed character. She just is not interesting.

  3. moffat I hope you are agreeing to our humble advice

would be a wonderful thing if a mysterious boy from the future would save the lives of both
moffat think time can be rewritten and you can do it not disappoint those who appreciate you

if the wife of the man most beloved of all creation will die
the universe will fall into darkness

  4. Moffat is also writing for a new series for Hbo. He’s a busy bee this year

  5. we hope that moffat takes into account the demands
    as regards River Song
but without Matt Smith would be useless since he leaves the series
    the special Christmas

  6. Bring back the doctors daughter it was too good of a cliff hanger not to be revisited!

  7. I Hope they bring back the master and the time lords and maybe the trial.

  8. American Johnny here and I am loving the show. Watched wen I was just a kid and thanks to BBC America I again can enjoy the show again. This week it has been so much fun catching up on the DR. Tho it has been a while since watching the show in the mid 70′s it has changed only for the better. Even tho the series will be a while before starting up again, I’m on pins and needles and cant wait.

  9. Is just me or is any one else wondering when the doctors daughter will reappear from David Tennant.

  10. I always hate when they change doctors and companions. My favorite has, and always will be, David Tennant and Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones). But I grew to like Matt Smith’s doctor, also. I wish he could do a few more seasons. We’ll see how Peter Capaldi does as the new doctor.

    • Yet if they hadn’t changed the Doctor and then later his companion, you’d never have seen your favorites.

  11. RTD has a problem with over-commitment as well. John Barroman and Eve Myles both said they’d love to do a 5th season Torchwood, Starz gave their blessing to bring it back to their network, but “The Davies” was too busy with the untested Wizards vs. Aliens to bother with the insanely popular Doctor Who spinoff.

  12. I find this hard to believe. “Not quite the force”? Are you f**king kidding me?! IT’S BIGGER THAN EVER. When Eccleston was the doctor, NONE of my friends knew what Doctor Who was. I knew ONE person who watched it. Now I can’t even go to the mall without seeing Doctor Who merchandise in a multitude of stores, and all of my friends know of it and most have watched it. And that’s here in the states.

And we’ve proven this wrong recently with the Doctor Who 50th anniversary being the most viewed simultaneously broadcast TV show. Millions tuned in, thousands flocked to thousands of theaters, and more are waiting for a chance to watch it online.

    • Firstly, when Eccleston was the Doctor, it was a UK powerhouse. The popularity trickled through the US by word-of-mouth mostly. Secondly, the items you see sold the least in those mall stores are the bow-ties and the fez’s, while the majority of American Whovians won’t be caught out without their Converse thanks to David Tennant.
      Which brings us to…
Thirdly, those that are saying Doctor Who is “Not quite the force” are referring to Steven Moffat vs. Russel T. Davies eras, in which the most notable changing of the guard was the shift from Tennant to Smith, who still irritates most of my American Whovians who love to chant “bring back Tennant” when what they really mean – whether or not they know it – is “bring back RTD!”
So finally, buying my tickets 7 days in advance, getting there an hour early to the theater, I was still in an enormous line waiting for the theater room to open listening to people so ecstatic about David Tennant’s return being the biggest reason they were there.

      • It wasn’t Matt Smith that almost had me abandon Dr Who. It was the terrible writing and production of the first half of season 7. Maybe it’s time to find someone who will make Dr Who their first priority and say goodbye to Moffat. As much as I liked what Russel T. Davies did for the tenth doctor, I think it was time for him to go…or we may of had a very flamboyantly homosexual 11th doctor and a companion struggling with HIV.

        • Clara killed it for me. She’s horrible and the writers got lazy and just plopped her relationship with the doctor, fully formed, into the show. They never gave us any reason to like her, they never developed or gave us any understanding of her character. She just was, and we were expected to like her because she was so bubbly and pretty I guess.

Donna’s character had quite a bit of depth and her relationship with the doctor was complex. Same with Amy & Rory – both their relationships with the doctor and each other. Clara is a paper cut out.

        • And yeah, I got tired of every other episode being a gay pride rally.

        • I think both shows have amazing actors and an amazing script. It must be said that the sherlock fans waited a good long time for their third season and even if all whovians( counting myself as one of them) have to wait about 9 months. There are still the old episodes to watch not to forget all the true whovivans who waited YEARS until the Doctor came back with christopher eccleston. Even if the wait is longer than usual. It is not too long, but if they keep on changing the release date like they did with sherlock I think doctor who could lose some power. Still as soon as the new season is out everything will regenerate into something new, but just as amazing as always. In the end we will all start to love the new doctor and his episodes. There is nothing to change the doctors own magic along with the magic of our dear T.A.R.D.I.S. :)

      • I agree with Michael. I watched the show to understand what my 13 yr old (American) daughter was into. Although she had already seen all the episodes, ‘we’ began watching together on 12/26. We binged through Eccleston and onto Tennant loving the show, now I’m just kind of liking seasons 5/6/7 with Smith. I like the actor, he’s very good but the writing and cinematography are not as good as it was with RTD.

      • I can’t agree more. I’ve been very open minded and love every episode. However I can’t help but notice I have no desire to watch Moffet’s seasons over again like I do RTD. This last season is especially hard to watch. There is no fun in the episodes. They have no soul or something. I actually find many of the classic seasons far more intriguing than last seasons stuff. I am a modern convert to the Doctor, but the new stuff couldn’t come out fast enough and I’ve resorted to getting the classics and even Big Finish audio stuff to help me wait. I agree with someone else who thinks that Mr. Moffat seems to be more in love with idea of his job rather than doing it. I’ve said several times over the last two seasons that the man needs someone to guide him. Leaving him on his own and nobody is watching the details….there are way to many stupid questions in your head when the episode is over…to many things left hanging that you THINK will be solved later but never are.

  13. My husband and I have watched every single episode of the revamp. We are American and started watching it on Netflix. The first(or really ninth) Doctor – I can’t really say much about because I had nothing to compare him to. I enjoyed him enough to keep watching. I HATED Tennant for the first episode or two, but fell in love with him and his budding relationship with Rose. I cried the first time, and each time I have rewatched the farewell between Tennant and Rose. Again, when the doctors switched, I hated Matt Smith, but I fell in love with him as well. While I did not like all of his companions, I loved him & River and I loved Rory & Amy. I am very sad to see him go. I am NOT so excited for the new, much older Doctor but am excited for more of the show in general. The wait is ridiculous and personally, a long wait does not build up my excitement. A long wait makes me forget all about a show. I hope I will not forget about Doctor who when it comes back, and if I remember to watch – that I come to love Capaldi. Also, does a new regeneration cycle mean that he gets 12 more regenerations? (Or 11 after Capaldi)

    • Late reply, but the doctor has basically 13 lives. When he regens thats the end of one life and the start of a new one. The new doctor i believe is number 13 now so when he dies that should be the last doctor .. but only time will tell what magic and mystery will unfold near the end or time changing events could be done to alter this fact. you can find more info on wiki, i hope this helps.

  14. EI thank if the next season don’t start till August of2014 then they have NO respect for the fans making them wait so long and even through I like the show I believe I will be done with dr who.there are shows out that won’t keep us on the hook for over a year that deserve our resecpect. so as for me I will be looking for a new dr and show

  15. I’m going to be very sad if I have to wait almost a year to get to know the new doctor.

(It annoys me to no end that some if you write “Dr” Who..He’s not a Dr. He’s The Doctor)

I’m very excited to see what the new doctor brings.

And lastly, waiting over 18 months for the next season of any show is disrespectful to the fans.

  16. Larissa, Yes. Because the Time Lords granted him a new regeneration cycle, he is the first doctor of cycle 2 whereas Smith was 12 of cycle 1. We’ll see how they write him out of a new regeneration in another 50 years.

I didn’t really think Peter Capaldi was that… impactful… during his first legitimate moments. He seemed… overreaching, like he needed acting lessons. I enjoyed the moments after Tennant’s regeneration, and jumping right into “Geronimo!” and imho I think Capaldi needed something as captivating, if not as thrilling. Something to adequately satisfy the whovian in preparation for the very.. very long (Thanks a lot, Moffit. Sherlock better be a hoot.) hiatus until Aug 2014. I don’t think he did that… and I really don’t care about the color of his damn kidneys. He’s also still not a ginger.

    • It could be as little as 34 years. Remember, there was a 16 year hiatus. By then (if the show is still in production) I’m sure they’ll find another way to grant him more cycles.

  17. I cannot see the point in the BBC putting off the new Dr Who until the back end of 2014. I do not believe that ever happened during the retro Dr Who of the 60′s and the 80′s. How can the BBC justify such unnecessary action?

    No need for it!

  18. Getting a bit tired of people crying about the BBC putting off the new series. For those who have done their research you will know that the BBC has had to make a lot of budget cuts, this is due to the ‘austerity’ measures that the entire UK is going through. As the BBC is state funded it has to take a blow aswell. The fact is that there simply is not enough money to churn out a new series every 6 months or even every year anymore. Unless there is a very rich, very generous, very dedicated whovian is out there and wants to fund it?

It is a matter of necessity, if they released it as soon as it was made we would be waiting 2 years at a time, so they are trying to spread it out, it sucks i know but that is plain and simple fact.

As for the actual quality of the episodes all i can see are people picking holes in an otherwise great show, i liked eccelston when they restarted the franchise, i hated them killing him off, but then i fell in love with tennant, and then i hatwd it when they killed him off too, then i fell in love with smith (ect ect) this is how it happens in doctor who, it is the formula that keeps it going, the reason they have made the show last this long is because they can repeatedly kill off and replace the actors and still keep it going. There will be changes, yea, but that is what the show is about. I can see nada wrong with the writing, its all good and part of the love of doctor who is keeping you hanging, digging up old loose ends and adding new ones.

The writing is not sloppy, the acting is not bad, and the story is not poor. If it was it would not have such a big fanbase would it?

There is a reason the show is popular.

  19. So is this the last Dr? Can he not be reborn agin? Or did his new energy reset his clock? Can he regenerate 12 more new times?

    • I highly doubt this will be the last regen, this IS doctor who we are talking about, they have a forumla whereby the show can keep going forever, effectively killing off the main characters over and over without risk to the shows integrity.

Knowing the doctor he will find a way to regen over and over without limit.

Think about it, he said himself that saving the time lords was impossible. Yet he did it. If he can do that he can do anything, i highly doubt this will be the last we see of river song either.

His daughter is also still out there, as is the david tennant human/time lord in the parallel universe with rose so tennant can theoretically still return.

  20. Im sorry i fail to see the value of a 4 season tenure of each dr,,both David and Matt could have played the Dr for many more years,,i think this quick turnover of Drs is highly detrimental to the character,,I think the BBC starts a star down the path to stardom and them moves them on,,,maybe its money maybe its by some other design but its a HUGE mistake,,we barly have time to learn to love the Dr and they mess us up by changing him,,and this NEW dr is too old to become the popular heart throb that the last two were,,i think it may just cost you some young people,,,

    • The reason is money. The actors who play the Doctor will make more doing a single movie than they will filming ten years of the show.

  21. IrishDon – I take it that he has been sort of re-booted (meaning 12 more regenerations). 11 referred to a “reset” and the new Doctor (12? 13?) didn’t seem to know how to fly the TARDIS.

  22. Hey if we have to wait then let’s hope it’s for great story telling.
My complaints are the inconsistencies regarding regeneration. The master in the 1996 film was trying to come back to life through possession due to the fact he spent all of his lives. However he came back at the end of time with a whole body. So why did they honor the 12 regeneration rule from that film? Mat Smiths doctor wasn’t afraid of dying from River Songs poison when she first met the dr. because he thought could regenerate. The show wasn’t honoring the 12 regeneration rule then so why now?

    • @Eric, don’t forget “11″‘s small use of regeneration energy to heal River’s hand. Perhaps that has something to do with it. Also, it’s possible he thought he was only the 12th and not actually the last; he is a bit forgetful after all… He had centuries to ponder his regeneration in Time of the Doctor, so that may have been when the reality of his imminent death really took hold.

      Happy New year!!!

  23. If they came into budget problems then they should’ve canceled the show. If that wasn’t the case then they shouldn’t of killed off Matt Smith til the show comes back.

    • They didn’t kill of Matt, he quit to do other things, so they had to write him out. Same with Tennant when he left. They wanted to leave before they were there too long and ruined it.

  24. Heartbreak! All I could feel right now is heartbreak because I have to wait so very long. It’s worse than being pregnant for 10 months and having to be induced. Somehow the magic and miracle become more like agony and exhaustion. Too bad they’re waiting so long. Television waits for no man. So I hope! I HOPE! I hope that they do an amazing job otherwise the let down will be unimaginably fathomless. In the mean time, they should air a few stories that tie up so many loose ends. By the way, ALL the companions are beautifully played.

  25. Dr 12 did seem weak, but in reflecting I think they gave us a preview into what he will be like… He said he needed instructions on flying the tardis. Maybe this new regeneration caused his memory to almost restart, and Clara will have to guide him. IMHO that is what I took from Pete’s weak intro.
Dave tenant was great, but I think Matt smith did something very special, his personality and acting (both hamming n subtle) were outstanding in making me love his dr. He came into the role without much knowledge of the show or who the dr was and I think that was magical. Every Matt smith episode is enchanting to me now. He was a great dr and will be hard to replace.

  26. I think rose should come back in somehow. She was my fav companion. She had the good qualities for a companion. She deserves another go.

  27. River Song needs to be dropped into a black hole, never to return. She is a drain on the show and a pain in the butt! She is a gross creepy sociopath admired by half-wits and fools. No sane decent person would EVER like such a disgusting pathetic worthless excuse for a character.
She doesn’t add to the show! Those saying that are either idiots, liars or they work for the show!
But since Moffat is OBSESSED with that worthless gross character, because after all, HE created her so of course she’s wonderful,(In his own pathetic little weird mind, anyway)
Hoping Peter Capaldi is smarter than Matt Smith and figures out that when Doctors #2 & #4 acted stupid, IT WAS AN ACT! They were only pretending (in character) to be stupid to throw off their enemies. That WAS what the writers intended. But for some reason Matt stupidly assumed that they weren’t pretending. That they really were stupid. RME
    THAT WAS STUPID!
Also Clara can knock off the little Miss Perky crap now. It is way over the top, it’s sickening.
But of course, Jenna can only work with the material she’s given, and with an imbecile like Moffat in charge, It’s no wonder her character is so 2-dimensional. Just like all the other female characters. River is NOT strong, she is a nasty A-Hole! Sorry for those too stupid or too nasty to comprehend the difference!
Amy too! She started out okay but once Rory came aboard, she was a prized B-Word! It’s like someone needed to take both wenches out and B-Slap them a few million times!
Oh and having a woman slap a man went out with Beehive Hairdo’s (Look it up) and Black and White TV’s. It’s NOT okay for a man to hit a woman NOR for a woman to hit a man. It’s called abuse regardless of which gender is doing the hitting. Those who find that funny are a sick archaic lot. Like cavemen! or Cavewomen!
I only watch an episode weeks after it’s aired. Since they ALREADY CHEAT with the ratings by combining the first and second showing AND Itunes, I’m not about to add to their BS ratings. Here in the U.S IT’S one airing ONLY that counts!
Can’t wait till Moffat leaves! He HAS ruined the show with his over the top crap! He tries to force the audience to feel things on command. Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. Well for most people. Sadly Moffat’s fans are easily led by the nose! If they’re told that all “Real Doctor Who Fans” do or like something, then THEY LIKE IT! Sort of like “Yes Sir!” followed by a salute. LOL!

No personal attacks?! Golly Gee! I wonder why? Because some cowardly writers can’t handle the truth? So sickening super fawning comments only? Really? Pretty childish and smacks of Censorship!

    • If you hate it so much, why are you watching it? And why are you using your “oh so precious time” exposing those of us who actually like the show, to your lengthy, rambling, ignorant, mean spirited drivel? It’s a TV show…a highly enjoyable one in fact! People who have imagination & emotions can be entertained by it. (I think having at least one heart is a requirement as well.) There is a wonderful invention that serves a multitude of purposes…it’s small, you hold it in your hand, and I believe for you…it’s 2 most important functions would be “change channel” or “off”.

  29. My question is what ever became of Dr Who’s Daughter (S4 E6) and will they ever revist that charicter and or talk more about the Dr’s real family he left behind.

    • They mentioned somewhere briefly that they wouldn’t revisit the daughter and it was going to remain a loose end. Saying that if a new writer comes on board who knows? Personally i would love to see her again i think she would make a great companion calling the doctor dad all the time would raise a few eyebrows.

      • Are you aware that David Tennant is actually married to the girl who played his daughter Jenny. She is also the real life daughter of previous DR. – Peter Davison.

So here return to the show would not be out of the questions. She is very involved in Dr. Who.
