Since the announcement that Steven Moffat will step down as Doctor Who showrunner at the end of season 10, it seems as though everyone associated with the show has been clamoring to offer their opinion on the changes that will take place, and the appointment of the new showrunner, Chris Chibnall.
We’ve heard from Moffat, who said that he is “beyond delighted” that Chibnall is taking over, and from Chibnall himself who said it was a “privilege and a joy” to be the next curator of Doctor Who. Former Doctor Matt Smith also offered his opinion on the changeover, calling Moffat “one of the greatest writers” to have been involved with the show, and adding: “There’s a wonderful writer coming in, and as always, it’s about regeneration and the reinvention of things.”
Now Peter Capaldi, the current Doctor residing in the TARDIS, has given his opinion on the appointment of Chibnall too, calling him a “wonderful writer” and adding that he is excited to see the direction Doctor Who will now go in. Per the Radio Times:
“I think Chris is a wonderful writer. So that’s the exciting thing about Doctor Who — I don’t really know what he’s going to do with it. It’s going to be different and he’ll take it in a direction that is his… and that’ll be very exciting. That’s the lovely thing about Doctor Who, it keeps changing. Steven’s been fabulous but it will be very exciting to see what Chris does.”
Capaldi made no mention of the rumors that he will step down as the Doctor at the end of season 10, in order to give Chibnall a clean slate with which to work, but any announcement of that sort would be unlikely to come right now. However, it is maybe a point to note that Capaldi did not say anything about looking forward to working with Chibnall – rather that he was excited ‘to see’ what would happen, almost as if he would be looking on as a viewer.
He also made great mention of how Doctor Who keeps changing, maybe another hint that Chibnall’s arrival will also bring another Doctor into the TARDIS? Capaldi is, like Moffat and Chibnall, a lifelong Doctor Who fan, so whatever the future may hold, and whether he ends up working under Chibnall’s guidance or merely looking on as a viewer, it’s a pretty safe bet that he will be embracing the change like the rest of us.
Doctor Who returns with a Christmas Special in December 2016. Season 10 will air in Spring 2017.
