Following the highly controversial “The End of Time” special, Doctor Who fans have somewhat given a Russell T. Davies a reprieve in regards to David Tennant’s swan song. Instead, the Whovians around the world are now focusing on Matt Smith, the eleventh doctor. With a new trailer now available, could it possible quell wary fans?

I’m not going to lie, my response to Matt Smith replacing David Tennant has generally been cold and his brief performance in “The End of Time” didn’t exactly do anything to change my mind. Still, I feel that I have been a little quick to judge and after watching this trailer a couple of times, something happened…

I started to get excited about the upcoming season.

Sure, there are the elements that everyone has been complaining about; vampires, Daleks and Weeping Angels (Oh my!). While I’m not too happy that Steven Moffat (the new head writer, executive producer and the man behind great episodes such as “The Girl in the Fireplace,” “Blink,” and “Silence in the Library”) has chosen to go down the “cool, hip” Twilight route with vampires, there’s nothing to tell me it’s not going to be an amazing episode (he has yet to fail, in my eyes).

Weeping Angels? Bring ‘em on! I loved them and if he’s found a way to bring them back in a great story, why not tell it? …And then there’s Daleks. Alright, maybe I’m not excited about everything, but who knows… it could be good. Right?

Let me be quiet for a bit so you can check out the trailer below.

OK, Ok, ok… I know what you’re going to say and you’re right. They’re not at all being shy about trying to shovel that “Geronimo” catch-phrase down your throat. Still, there’s something there that has me excited and I think it’s because Matt Smith, who almost instinctively gives off an “emo” vibe, is going to be a more dark and gritty Doctor than the previous two.

This is all speculation and I could be completely wrong, but there’s a scene in the trailer where he’s walking down the steps and, as our friends across the pond would say, “he had a face like thunder” (he’s angry).

In case you’re too lazy to click play, here are some stills from the trailer.

So, what did you think of the trailer? Has this changed your opinion of Matt Smith? If not, what will it take? Even if you’re not a fan of Matt Smith, you can’t deny that you’ll be tuning into Doctor Who this Spring to at least check it out.

The 13-episode season 5 (series 5 in the UK) of Doctor Who is set to air in Spring 2010 on BBC One (UK) and BBC America (US).

  1. Rumor is Tennant is trying out for the riddler in the new batman movie with christian bale. Hmmm and wasnt that Bale seen with tennant recently in..L.A

  2. the old man – I know, it’s a shame isn’t it? Even if those WERE bigger on the inside there is simply no room to stuff someone inside the doorway.

Boxes with lights on top where someone of dubious state can be interred until a pickup can be arranged seems like a great idea to me…

If Doctor Who were made today, what innocuous-of-our-time object do you think the TARDIS would get stuck as and eventually become iconic when said object became obsolete?

The old standby is, of course, the port-a-loo – but these don’t seem to be becoming obsolete anytime soon….

  3. The Master’s Tardis was a grandfather clock wasnt it?

  4. That is the only time I remember seeing it, in The Deadly Assassin ( Possibly my favourtie old Who episode ), what else has it been?

  5. It was at one time, yes. It has been many things.

  6. I know a vehicle has been used but if you go that route I think it should at least be a panel van. What about a constructing engineers trailer? Their pretty innocuous. Two unusual ones a voting booth and a toll booth. A toll booth sounds crazy but think of booths in parking garages, lots and the like. A transformer pen. What is that? A fenced off area with a truck size transformer in it. High voltage sign attached to the fence. A mausoleum; www dot americanmausoleums dot com. Seeing the doctor is from an extinct culture and spends a measurable time in the past, a mausoleum might seem the most fitting.

  7. Wow Jeff, you seem pretty strung out about not knowing. “Friggin” indeed. Have you stopped to consider that it’s unreleased incidental music by Murray Gold? We’ll know what it’s called when it’s commercially released, post-Season Five.

  8. I don't know. I'm torn. I like David Tennant because he's good for the role and he's cute too. I may be biased right now but I'm eager to see the new series. I'm hoping for the best.

  9. the old man – not bad! Great ideas for new TARDIS iconia! At one point it may have been an interesting idea to have fixed the Chameleon Circuit but *sigh* it really is just a perfect thing, you know. Policing the universe for the public as a doctor who makes people better…

  10. I like the trailer and am excited about the new season. I do not like the catch phrase “Geronimo”. As a Native American (of the great Mohawk Nation) from the states, the use of expression has negative connotations. After the catch phrases of “Fantastic” and “Brilliant” I was expecting something more like wonderful or amazing.

  11. No, sorry – There's no Doctor after David Tennant. I honestly do not think anyone can match his style, flair & charisma.
I will give it a try because it is an awesome show – but it will never be the same with out Tennant.

  12. I like how when he says: “Trust me, I'm the Doctor.” Its Tennant's voice. Nice touch.

  13. or at least it sounds like Tennant

  16. The Eleventh Hour is the first Dr. Who episode I've ever seen. The new guy seems pretty good to me. And his companion is certainly a beautiful young lady. I'm glad to have found this site so I can catch up on the history.
