BBC America To Air Four New ‘Doctor Who’ Specials

2 years ago by

Before kicking off the upcoming seventh series of Doctor Who with “Asylum of the Daleks” this fall, BBC America is releasing four brand new, hour-long Who-centric documentaries this summer. Last year BBC America put out a series of “Best of” Who specials – including Best of the CompanionBest of the Doctor and Best of the Monsters – to act as (what the network called) a “memory jog.” This time around, BBC America is taking a bit of a different route, mixing educational elements of documentaries with the relaxed fun style that the previous Doctor Who specials of last year exhibited.

Here’s a list of the  specials that BBC America will be presenting starting next week.

The Science of Doctor WhoWho-fans will get a chance to get their nerd on by exploring the real-life science behind some of the fundamental concepts and most iconic ideas of Doctor Who. The Science of Doctor Who will premiere Saturday, August 4th at 11:00pm

The Women of Doctor Who:  It takes a certain type of gal to ride with The Doctor – Whether she’s blasting Daleks or running for her life in heels. The Women of Doctor Who will take a closer look the lovely ladies of the series, past, present – and possibly the future? Catch The Women of Doctor Who Saturday, August 11th at 9:00pm

The Timey-Wimey Stuff of Doctor Who: For a Time Lord, tomorrow can easily be both today and yesterday – but for us mere humans it all becomes a big time-wimey ball of confusion. Help relieve some of the time-traveling tangle by watching The Timey-Wimey Stuff of Doctor Who Saturday, August 18th 11:00pm

The Destinations of Doctor Who:  With an extended hand and a gentle smile, The Doctor can whisk you away to anywhere and anywhen. For those of us still stuck on Earth, The Destinations of Doctor Who will give us a closer look at some of our favorite Whovian places from the majestic Starship UK to treacherous Demons Run – all with no passport required! The Destinations of Doctor Who concludes the documentaries Saturday, August 25th at 9:00pm.

Along with titles, dates and times, BBC America has also released some snazzy new teaser images to accompany their new specials. Check them out below (click to enlarge):

    • They confirmed the date as August 25th today. I imagine they’ll air the documentary and then the first episode.

  4. Swwwweeeetttt!! I’m going to have to make sure the DVR is set for those!

  5. anyone know if these docs will actually include anything before series 5? the previous ones aired by BBCA basically pretended Doctor Who didn’t exist before series 5 and i’m just getting tired of it from BBCA.

  6. sweet only thing left to watch on TV beside transformers prime……

  7. Yay! I love this special episodes. I already watched the ‘The Women of Doctor Who’ online @ peekyoutoo.com. It’s awesome. Worth watching.

  8. These shows are STUPID. I like Dr. WHO…I don’t really like watching random people…comedians..etc. TALK about Dr. Who.

The only people these would appeal to ARE Dr. Who fans, who don’t need this thinly-veiled promotional clip show! Anyone who hasn’t already watched/liked Dr. Who will find this a totally unfathomable turn-off.
