The 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who might not be starring any of the Doctors from before David Tennant’s reign, but that doesn’t mean that the BBC can’t still pay tribute to them in another way. Anticipation is high for this special feature-length episode, which will mark half a century of adventures in time and space. And based on how things were left off in the season 7 finale, “The Name of the Doctor,” there may be something pretty momentous on the way.
A specially-shot teaser trailer for the episode certainly plays up the idea of the Doctor’s entire history leading up to one particular point in time: “The Day of the Doctor.” Showcasing old favorites like Willam Hartnell and Tom Baker with retouching to make them high definition, the trailer shows all of the Doctors so far (though some are tricky to spot) and references the “impossible day” that will come in the special episode. Perhaps this impossibility is the Doctor meeting himself, though for something that’s not so supposed to happen at all this does occur quite a lot.
Clara also makes an important appearance in the trailer, once again tying this episode to her actions in the season 7 finale, and there’s a glimpse of Rose Tyler around the same time that the Ninth Doctor comes into view, which is quite appropriate. Billie Piper will reprise her role as the first companion of the new series in the special episode, and we suspect that there might be a few surprises in store that the BBC has managed to keep under wraps so far.
Also tied into this minute-long exploration of the Doctor’s history are a few of the different friends and foes that he has encountered over his very long lifetime. The Daleks and the Zygons will both definitely be making an appearance, but will the list of featured faces like the Weeping Angels, K-9 and D84 also have cameos, or were they only included in the trailer for the purposes of nostalgia?
Take a very close look and watch the video through a few times, because there’s a lot of detail packed into this short trailer, and tell us in the comments if you think you’ve found any extra clues.
The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special will be simulcast around the world on November 23rd, 2013.
