[Minor Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Spoilers Below]
This week Doctor Who took to the Tower of London to shoot scenes for the upcoming 50th Anniversary, and now photos and dialogue from the filming have been released, revealing a bit more details about who and what fans can expect to see come November.
Thanks to Doctor Who’s accommodating filming barriers, Blogtor Who was able to get close to the scenes being filmed with Clara and returning character Kate Stewart (“The Power of Three”) sitting in the back of a mysterious black SUV (see below).
They were so close, in fact, that some of the dialogue was able to be heard by those standing nearby – dialogue that confirms UNIT is officially returning.
During the scene, featuring Jenna-Louise Coleman and Jemma Redgrave in the car pictured, Clara could be heard to ask, “What about the Doctor?” whilst Kate Stewart could be seen mentioning, “the Unified Intelligence Taskforce.”
Up until now, there had been some speculation about whether or not UNIT would be returning. Though the recently announced return of one of the Doctor’s old foes, the Zygons, did hint at a possible (and likely) return of UNIT – since that’s who helped the Doctor defeat them originally – Moffat could, essentially, use anything (or anyone) else to help aid in the fight.
After the recent announcement of the return of Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), Head of Scientific Research at UNIT, and photos of Doctor Who filming at the Tower of London – UNIT’s last known headquarters – being released, and dialogue from the script specifically mentioning UNIT, there’s no longer any doubt about the inclusion of the Unified Intelligence Taskforce. Now, it’s time to figure out what they’re up to.
Today, Doctor Who was filming in the middle of Trafalgar Square in London, and Blogtor Who has photos on their Twitter of the Doctor and Clara making a chaotic landing in the TARDIS while being surrounded by UNIT agents. Though the UNIT agents are heavily armed and protected, they don’t appear to be on the offense as the Doctor walks up to Kate Stewart and salutes her. As the Doctor and Kate begin to talk, Kate says that she has “sealed orders from Her Majesty Elizabeth the First” for the Doctor before providing him with an envelope.

Now that filming is underway, fans have a better idea about what all may be included in the anniversary special this fall. And with David Tennant and Billie Piper set to make their Doctor Who return in this special, it’s only a matter of time before we get a closer look at the pair on set, hopefully revealing more about how they will be included in the anniversary. But with UNIT’s inclusion, as well as Rose’s return, don’t be surprised if it’s the mortal version of Tennant’s iconic tenth iteration that pops up (which could be a disappointment for some fans).
