The packed Marvel Cinematic Universe schedule continues next month with the long-awaited release of Doctor Strange, the most magic-oriented film yet in this realm of superheroes. As a recent full-length trailer for the film explains, the Avengers we’ve seen so far protect the world from physical dangers, while Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be the man to safeguard it against more mystical threats.
The upcoming film will be an origin story for the character of Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant surgeon whose medical career is cut short by a crippling accident. His journey to heal himself leads to a turn from strictly science to more otherworldly considerations, studying with the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) to become the Sorcerer Supreme.
While the movie promises some awe-inspiring special effects, the latest TV spot for the film shows that magic doesn’t always work as intended. Like previous films in the MCU, Doctor Strange finds space for some humor amidst the drama. In this case, the new sorcerer finds it difficult to execute all of his magical abilities, including the control of an apparently affectionate levitation cloak.
That flowing red cloak is the signature element of the Doctor Strange persona, and has thus far featured prominently in posters and trailers for the film. This truly magical item doesn’t just help its wearer levitate, it also protects against mystical attacks and can act independently — as the video above shows.
A big part of selling any superhero is making the costume appear badass instead of silly. Cumberbatch has really put the time in to wield his cloak with a flourish, so successfully that he earned cheers for it from San Diego Comic-Con viewers watching footage from the film. MCU characters have also succeeded by creating a sense of being in on the joke with the audience, and while Doctor Strange will definitely have its share of drama and intense action, it’s clear from videos like the one above that there will be some entertaining moments of levity as well.
Doctor Strange opens November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; Avengers: Infinity – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel– March 8, 2019; Untitled Avengers – May 3, 2019; and as-yet-untitled Marvel movies on July 12, 2019, and on May 1, July 10, and November 6 in 2020.
