Doctor Strange Art Marvel Universe Marvel Recruits Prometheus Writer For Doctor Strange

While not yet officially titled and dated we’ve known for a long time that Marvel Studios had Doctor Strange in mind for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s finally becoming a reality. Just two weeks ago Scott Derrickson (Sinister) confirmed trade reports that he will be directing the next new Marvel Studios character film, and helping usher in the mystical side of the Marvel Comics universe into the film franchise.

Four years ago Marvel brought in Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write the screenplay for a Doctor Strange movie but it wasn’t until after The Avengers that Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige confirmed that we’d finally meet Ant-Man and Doctor Strange in Phase 3, after The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Strange represents a passion project for the producer and one he’s repeatedly expressed confidence in over the years.

With Derrickson aboard, the script will be getting revised and Marvel is bringing in Jon Spaihts to be the new writer. Spaihts got his big break writing 2011′s The Darkest Hour then landed the monumental task of penning the first drafts of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (here’s how he got the gig), before it was handed to Damon Lindelof. Spaihts isn’t new to the Disney family either, having been tapped previously to pen the screenplay for The Black Hole.

According to Deadline who broke the news, Marvel is fast-tracking this project and we all know what that means. We’ve been saying it for a while. With a director attached, a new writer on board and at actors in talks with Marvel Studios for the lead role (we can confirm one of them ourselves), it’s a safe bet that Doctor Strange is taking the next available release slot Marvel has claimed. Expect to see Doctor Strange release July 6, 2016 and expect it to become official next month at San Diego Comic-Con. The three names currently reported to be in talks for the lead role include Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto and Tom Hardy.

And for those curious about the direction of Doctor Strange, Scott Derrickson spoke with JoBlo and explained that Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange is his favorite Marvel character and that he pushed hard to be the one to helm the project.

“I wanted it really bad. More than any other project that I’ve gone after, I felt compelled to do everything in my power to get on that project. Genuinely felt like I was the right guy to do it.”

He continued, talking about the reception online to him landing the gig and how it’s finally the right time to make Doctor Strange, the Master of the Mystic Arts, a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I think the nicest surprise for me, the most unexpected surprise, is the positive reaction. Both to me getting the film – I guess I expected the detractors, and they just haven’t been there, it’s all been quite positive. More than that, it’s just the general enthusiasm for Doctor Strange. I think people who know the comic world and the Marvel universe, they all feel the same way I do, which is, “This is the Marvel movie we’re all ready to see now.” This movie needs to exist. The outpouring of excitement that people have shown is the thing I’ve been most pleasantly surprised.”

For those curious about Doctor Strange and want to know about his origins and how he can help deliver a new and unique Marvel movie experience, check out the 2007 animated Doctor Strange feature written by Greg Johnson and Craig Kyle – the latter of whom produced the Thor movies and is helping write Thor 3. It’s on Netflix right now and it’s absolutely worth watching.

  1. “check out the 2007 animated Doctor Strange feature”

Agree, that was an amazing movie, it has strong Batman Begins vibe but it also has a tint of magical Avatar-vibe. Including Strange in the MCU will be a great step towards widening the universe.

    • And one thing for sure, the visual for this movie is gonna be supernaturally amazing!

      • All this film needs to do is take what Harry Potter was doing and up the antee on that.

        • ummm….no

        • that battle where lord voldemort and dumbledore fight was pretty awesome. i hope the doctor strange movie has a lot of action like that.

          • WB made it easy for Dr. Strange with their Harry Potter movies, people are now more accepting of wizards in movies more than ever.

            • I’d like to prop you for using the correct “than” over the incorrect, yet far more commonly used, “then.” Cheers!

Also, Go Dr. Strange! So pumped up for this!

          • If they do it right it’ll be on a scale that’ll make that magical duel look like infants mindlessly waving sticks.

    • Completely agree! It was a great introduction to the character for the uninitiated. I can’t wait to see it visualized in live-action.

  2. Dr. Strange should be played by a Latino actor –
NOTE: I’m NOT suggesting to change Dr. Strange’s ethnicity or anything about the character in anyway –-
just to open the casting options to more than the standard white guys- no offense white guys

ie. – someone like Nestor Carbonell or similar type an actor who can play multiple ethnicities – there are many light skinned or ethnically ambiguous Latino actors who could bring something unique and different from all the other male leads from the other films

Benjamin Bratt would be an EXCELLENT choice – a solid actor who can definitely pull off Dr. Strange -
if you haven’t seen his film – Pinero – about tragic poet and playwright Miguel Pinero – watch the film asap & then give an opinion
    here’s a link for a scene from Pinero: http://tinyurl.com/pineroclip1
here’s Bratt with a goatee – spitting image of the Dr. Strange: http:tinyurl.com/bbrattgoateepic1
if the links aren’t working just google them

Latino actors – like Nestor Carbonell & Benjamin Bratt – among many others – can play Non-Latino characters.

for any “white” actor mentioned – there is an equally TALENTED Latino actor – who can play white (if that’s even important) -that should be considered & given consideration – and Dr. Strange is the perfect character for Marvel to cast with an open mind – others could be Oscar Isaac (now in Star Wars) or may be Gael Garcia Bernal or Diego Luna or Santiago Cabrera … the list goes on

casting a non-white actor speaks volumes to the modern world –
and FYI the reason many studios try to make tentpole film casts multi-ethnic – is not about being PC – it’s about being smart from both a creative & a business standpoint – being realistic that the largest movie going audience at the box office in the US is the Latino community (this is fact by the MPAA & other studies) – and demo-graphics have the Latino community growing fastest over any other demo – the U.S. is no longer White dominant and many families are now mixed in many ways – ie. multi-cultural – and anyone who can’t appreciate that is living in the past

here’s some articles you may find of interest re: film audiences & the Latino community – read these articles – be informed

    Hollywood Reporter: http://tinyurl.com/HWRtopaudiencegrowth1
    The Credits film site: http://tinyurl.com/movieaudiences1
if the links aren’t working just google it

a Latino was recently added to the cast of Fast & Furious 7 – who also happens to be a popular singer and Vin Diesel made an appearance at his recent concert to make the announcement – it’s not an accident

    remember this:
Linda Carter – the original Wonder Woman …. is half-Mexican !! and no one ever had a problem with that

    fellow readers -
PLEASE respond with comments re: opening the casting options – and please view the links above
Hollywood needs to stop being so myopic in it’s way of casting and portraying people of color

    • Dr. Strange should be played by an actor who fits the part the best. There, wasn’t that easier?

      • yes – you mean like Benjamin Bratt – right? a very talented and experienced actor who could definitely play the part
or may be you meant Nestor Carbonell or Pedro Pascal or any of the other names I suggested

please explain why any of the actors I mentioned would not fit the part as much as Jared Leto or anyone else that is supposedly being considered?

and again if you haven’t seen the film Pinero – go watch it and THEN give an opinion (as well as any other films or tv work featuring Benjamin Bratt – give a talented actor a chance and guess what they’ll probably meet or exceed your expectations

  3. Dr. Strange will definitely bring a new dimension to the MCU that is much needed. I just hope they completely embrace the mysticism of it all, instead of trying to explain it off as “alien science” like they did in Thor. Don’t get me wrong, it was the right move for Thor, given that they had to establish the universe first in such a way that was compatible with the tech-based Iron Man. But reducing magic to science would just take away from what Dr. Strange truly is. He’s Dumbledore, Gandalf, Obi-Wan Kenobi. And they should keep him that way. I think audiences will be ready to accept that by then.

Speaking of which, I wonder what the timing for this movie will be relative to the Netflix Iron Fist. Both are very mystical, but differently so. I wonder if they’re using one to set a precedent for the other, so that people will be more receptive to the idea of magic and mysticism.

  4. Well Prometheus was a hot bowl of poo! So that means………

    *sighs*

    • Didn’t you read that part that says “(Jon)Spaihts got his big break writing 2011′s The Darkest Hour then landed the monumental task of penning the first drafts of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (here’s how he got the gig), before it was handed to Damon Lindelof.”

      • quite obvious he/she didn’t read the whole article or even knows who wrote Prometheus.

    • Go find and read Spaiht’s script draft for Prometheus. He wasn’t the problem. Lindelof’s subsequent modifications were. As if that should surprise anyone who pays any attention to Lindelof’s contributions to things.

      • Spaiht’s original script for Prometheus is pretty great.

I was a pretty staunch supporter of Prometheus before reading that script but ever since I can’t help wonder why they didn’t make that movie?

  5. The person best to play strange is Pierce Bronson

    • No.

    • NO! He’s not bad but James Caviezel would be so much better. Just look up the remake of the Count of Monte Cristo and you will see someone prime for Strange.

      • James Caviezel would be a solid choice. I’d dig that. Still pulling for Benedict Cumberbatch just so he has a majorly leading role as a hero in the years to come as opposed to DC sneaking him in.

    • Who’s Pierce BRONSON?

      • He’s the British Charles Bronson.

  6. I fell asleep twice before i could fully get through that Marvel animated film. In fact mostof their animated features fall into the realm of Meh.

  7. I wonder do we get Baron, Dorm’ and/or Shuma for this one. I’d love to see Shuna as an Avengers for actually, maybe for part 5.

    • Avengers FOE

      • Would absolutely love to see Shuma-Gorath. Awesome character. Could eventually tie in to Avengers 3 if they decide to do the Thanos Imperative story since it revolves around Cancerverse and Many Angled Ones.

  8. I know it’s premature but I’m really interested to see what they’ll come up with in term of costume. The comic one is perfectly fine, it just needs to translate well onto live action.

  9. Omg! The Promethus writer teamed with the Sinister director!! That’s the most epic team up!! This movie is gonna be sick!!! So pumped!!

All we need know is either Luke Evans or Pedro Pascal to play Doctor Strange and Benedict Cumberbatch to play Dormammu!

    • yes to both those and in those specific roles. Bennie cumberbun should not be Strange. Pedro on the otherhand has the right look etc and is a class A Actor

      • Pedro is also fresh. He won’t be distracting audiences with his personal fame. Pedro also possesses a highly appealing charm. GOT had him portray a sleazy, bisexual, murderous prince and his character was widely loved by fans of the show. If he can make Oberyn Martell appealing to most people, he would nail a complicated character like Stephen Strange.

        • Dude, Oberyn was awesome in the books too. He was my favorite character. He might be a little loose with his sexual morals, but he’s a good person. Not exactly sleazy. But I don’t think Pedro is right for the role. He doesn’t have that Vincent Price look.

        • I find it interesting that you put “bisexual” between “sleazy” and “murderous” like it belongs there.

      • Umm, no. The doc needs a more upper-class, aristocratic actor. He often has this kinda haughty attitude towards his fellow humans. Luke Evans could pull it off (he also sports the stache quite well) but Pedro Pascal just doesn’t cut it.

    • Guardian Outlaw…*sigh* I….Love…..THAT CASTING PICK!!!! Of course I’ve been screaming that cast for a while. It’s good to see smart people on the internet! hahahaha

  10. Hope we see the dread Dormammu up on the screen in this movie. I am definitely aboard for Dr. Strange. I do request tho that it have the actor playing Dr. Strange LOOK like Doc in the comics!

  11. Introduce Strange in his own standalone film and then team him up with Thor in Thor 3 against the fire thing demon :)

    • I think Strange in Thor 3 would be great. I don’t think the “Solo” films should be limited to the title characters any more. A big advantage Cap 2 had was the presence of other Avengers characters that, likely, made it easier to write a compelling script that doesn’t conflict with the main Avengers storyline.

    • The fire thing demon? You mean Surtur? He (along with Ragnarok) needs to be pushed back to Thor 4. Thor 3 has to be against the Enchantress, and that’s where Strange can help.

  12. if the rights go to marvel again even if its an unrelated topic i’d like to see jim
    parson play magneto.

  13. I will say this until they make an official casting announcement; Matthew Goode for Dr. Strange all the way! Find a picture of him with facial hair and he’s spot on. He is also a very accomplished actor. I’m just not sure if he is a WB’s actor so to speak…

    • Spot on? I don’t know where you got that (certainly not from the picture you linked) but no. Luke Evans looks way more the part than Goode ever will.

    • yeahno.

  14. ^ Doooo iiiiit! Dooo iiit naaaaoooow! Whaaat ahh you vaiting fooor?!

    • No.

  15. Hang on a second, Prometheus had a writer??

    • In the same way a toddler drawing on the wall in marker is art.

  16. I look forward to a Doc strange film…Should be interesting. I wonder if they’ll include, Baron Mordo?

  17. I had no idea Derrickson was so enthusiastic about the movie I think thats a great thing and will make making it a lot more fun I really liked the animated movie that was pretty darn good and I think I will like the live action one even more. I’m personally hoping for Cumberbatch to take the lead role I just think that would be genius casting and it would certainly sell tickets because plenty of people like him as an actor I’m hoping they go with Dormamu for the film because If you asked me who the arch nemesis of Doc Strange was I’d probably say Baron Mordo a lot of the bad guys in the first movie of a franchise are typically the arch nemesis of the hero so I would like to see something different. This interview just got me pumped I can’t wait for 2016 (most likely lol)

  18. The way they’re going about this film is promising.

My little nerd wish is that they show Agamotto in his flaming-blue-tiger form in one of these Marvel films.

  19. Whew! For a second here I thought you were talking about Lindelof… Man, don’t scare me like that!

  20. So help if Doctor Strange is a scientist and not a surgeon and his magic is just a phase 3 McGuffin for a infinity stone/item… I’m so skipping this movie.

  21. Very good news indeed. I can hardly wait. I have been a of The Sorceror Supreme for more than 40 years and at long last it appears he will get his just reward :)

  22. If Derrickson and company can visually created those magically warped psychedelic worlds created by Ditko, Colan, and Brunner, then I am so there.

Hope Clea’s making an appearance too.

    And Dormammu would be AWESOME!!!

  23. agreed,LLNYRN,and maybe they could get the actress from Game of Thrones, the one with pet dragons to play the role of Clea :)
