With the premiere of Ant-Man this summer, Marvel Studios officially wrapped up its Phase 2, with Phase 3 set to launch next spring with the debut of Captain America: Civil War. The third film in the Captain America series will feature a number of established heroes as well as introduce those who are new to the MCU, like Black Panther and Spider-Man. Later in 2016, the Sorcerer Supreme will make his grand entrance into the shared universe with his own standalone film, Doctor Strange.
The feature began filming in Nepal earlier this month, with fans getting a first look at both Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular hero, Stephen Strange, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as his rival and fellow sorcerer Baron Karl Mordo. However, the characters to be played by other confirmed cast members remain a mystery; now, Doctor Strange has added another player in an unconfirmed role.
The Wrap is reporting Amy Landecker has been cast in Doctor Strange in an unspecified role. The actress most recently starred in Amazon’s critically acclaimed series Transparent. She has also appeared in Project Almanac as well as the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man alongside Doctor Strange co-star Michael Stuhlbarg, who will be playing rival neurosurgeon Dr. Nicodemus West to Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange.
Doctor Strange is being directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). Rounding out the rest of the cast is Tilda Swinton as Strange’s mentor The Ancient One, as well as Rachel McAdams and possibly Mads Mikkelsen in undisclosed roles. It has, however, been speculated McAdams will portray Christine Palmer, a version of the character Night Nurse. Comments from Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight about the MCU having plans for Night Nurse seem to further reinforce these rumors.
With all the mystery surrounding the Doctor Strange cast – and film in general given the lack of an official plot synopsis – it’s unsurprising that Landecker’s role is being kept under wraps. The secrecy may be an indication she will be playing a known character, as seems to be the case with McAdams and Night Nurse (if those rumors turn out to be true, of course). Though there are a number of characters from the comics that Landecker could be portraying, perhaps the most likely is Clea, Strange’s estranged wife with her own ties to sorcery.
That being said, many have speculated McAdams could be playing Clea as well. With the wealth of comic characters each actress could be playing, as well as the possibility Landecker could portray an original character, it’s impossible to say for certain what her role will be or how it will factor into Doctor Strange. For now, we’ll have to wait for more official confirmation, though it’s unclear how soon we’ll get it.
