5 Actors Who Could Play Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

Published 1 year ago by This is a list post.

Doctor Strange Actors ListIt's been no secret that of all the Marvel comics yet to be adapted to film, Doctor Strange was a top priority. Recent reports have shown that not only is the film moving forward, but that the studio is interested in big-name talent to lead it.Johnny Depp has apparently been approached most recently, following the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Justin Theroux, all having been rumored for the part at one time or another. So if Marvel is now willing to cast an established star over one the making, the casting choices for 'The Sorcerer Supreme' are wide open. Here is our list of 5 Actors Who Could Play Doctor Strange.

Jon Hamm

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Jon HammGiven the basic requirements for the character of Dr. Stephen Strange - a cold, arrogant surgeon who injured his hands and must find a new purpose in life - it's not surprising to see rumors that Jon Hamm (Mad Men) is Marvel's second choice for the part. Hamm has made a career of playing borderline detestable figures who audiences can't help but adore, even if he is a bit older than Marvel's usual leading men.But add the fact that Doctor Strange will be trying something entirely new for Marvel (magical, offbeat drama and action), and Hamm's comedic chops could also serve him well. With drama and comedy cred, Hamm's casting would still leave the direction of the film a mystery.

Matt Bomer

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Matt BomerIf Hamm's blend of ego and charm is the direction Marvel's headed, but the studio would prefer an actor a bit younger, then Matt Bomer would be a promising candidate; in fact, on USA's White Collar, Bomer portrays a character not much of a stretch from a young Don Draper. Since being cast for Brett Ratner's failed Superman reboot (and voicing the character instead), Bomer has been a fan-favorite option for Bruce Wayne, as well. We'd argue that Doctor Strange is a better fit, as few proven young actors can pull off Bomer's playboy persona (which made him a fan-favorite for Fifty Shades of Grey) and his lighter side. Again, it seems Marvel is aiming for fame, but if they end up eying a younger, good-looking lead, Bomer remains a choice that wouldn't disappoint.

Orlando Bloom

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Orlando BloomIt isn't just his close proximity to Johnny Depp in the minds of mass audiences that has Orlando Bloom on our list - even if the Pirates of the Caribbean actor did come to fame as part of Disney's blockbuster franchise. Bloom may have failed to remain at the heights of Lord of the Rings or Pirates in terms of fame or recognition, but a little time out of the spotlight isn't a bad thing. That thinking paid off for Marvel by casting Robert Downey, Jr. as the heart of their movie universe, and Bloom's acting skills outside of the limelight are nothing to scoff at. Could Doctor Strange offer him the same chance to shine? Hard to say. But we can see him in the role, which is more than we can say for other names being thrown around.

Keanu Reeves

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Keanu ReevesFirst things first: yes, Keanu Reeves is a bit eccentric. And yes, his roles are often surprising and divisive. But he already proved up to the task of portraying a sorcerer with knowledge of the occult in Constantine (2005). For good or ill, when Reeves told audiences that staring into a cat's eyes can pierce the veil between humanity and the supernatural, they took his word for it.When Keanu fits a role, he fits, and the enigmatic actor has, in many ways, proved to be both as removed and yet kindhearted as Stephen Strange himself, so we have no question he could give a faithful performance. While many other fan-favorites would raise eyebrows or elicit groans from audiences when they began casting 'spells' or 'summoning spirits,' we believe Reeves would seem right at home - that alone makes him an attractive option.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Benedict CumberbatchFew actors have taken the Comic-Con audience by storm in recent years like Benedict Cumberbatch, and with good reason. Roles like 'Khan,' the most iconic villain in Star Trek history, or 'Sherlock Holmes' would catapult any actor into worldwide fame, but Cumberbatch has more than enough talent and presence to not just live up to major roles, but give them new life for entirely new generations. It's hard to think of another actor that could bring the grandeur, ego and sense of wonder to Doctor Strange like Cumberbatch, and the fact that he has become a household name is a one-two punch of 'bankability.' If Marvel is willing to spend top-dollar on a star, then Cumberbatch is a perfect choice - if he would even be interested in the part.

Doctor Strange New SuitThat concludes our list of actors that we feel could bring the sense of mysticism, adventure and drama to the upcoming Doctor Strange movie. It's well known that other actors have expressed interest in the role, or look the part like no other, but there is more to making the movie work than simply fitting the cape and collar. What's your take on the film's chances and possible direction? Will the leading man determine how interested you are in the film, or are you a fan of the source material first? 1. my favorite from this list is Orlando. i dont want Benidict

  2. I think James Purefoy would be a pretty good choice too.

  3. BENEDICT!!!!!!! F*CK YES!!!

  4. Viggo Mortensen

    • ^ yes this im still going with Viggo for strange

    • Viggo was the first actor attached to the prospect of a Doctor Strange flick. That was a few years ago?

Some of the suits at Disney might think he’s a bit too old for the role but I think he’d be great.

      But realistically, wouldn’t happen.

It’s a fact that he was one of the very first actors Zack Snyder considered for the role of General Zod. Viggo turned it down flat.

  5. Jon Hamm would be more Doctor Doom

    • Totally agreed, they should consider him for the fantastic four reboot

  6. No way this happens, but Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger on Game of Thrones) would be cool.

    • I like the idea of that, he’s a brilliant actor and it’d be nice to see an Irishman in the marvel universe (even though he’d most definitely be putting on an american accent :P) also he looks the part :)

  7. I don’t think these are good choices. Jon Hamm was mentioned some months ago to play the part of IM once Mr. Downey Jr. says goodbye.

In the case of Mr. Cumberbatch, he has been brought up for a part in episode VII. I still consider that Viggo Mortensen who was also mentioned some articles ago, would be great for the part.

  8. why not tommy wiseau?

seriously though, christoph waltz or aiden gillen are my top 2 actors that could be the sorcerer supreme. gotta admit keanu would be awesome though

  9. I vote for:

Keanu Reeves: Adding to the description of the fit here on the site, is the fact that he has great martial arts training and can display both the early arrogance of Strange as well as his growing kindness nad responsibility (througout Stange’s “origin transformation” and trials).

  10. Luke Evans.

I thought about him some minutes ago, then saw some pics of him and yeah, he would be really spot on, to me.

Maybe not the Star Marvel might want, but he would be a pretty solid choice

    • I would have to Agree! Ever since the latest Fast movie, I can picture him as either Doctor Strange or Namor.

    • Yes! Why didnt I think of that. Great choice.

  11. I don’t understand why Keanu Reeves would be a top choice for anything. He was perfect for The Matrix simply bc he barely spoke. It seems to me that a great protagonist is only as good as their opposite. To have a great villain, you need to nail it on the acting. Keanu being in this list made me laugh. Cumberbatch, now that’s a different story.

    • i laughed too, until i read on and remembered him in Constantine, he was great in that movie and i can definitely see him pulling off Strange……though he still wouldnt be my first choice, im rooting for Aiden Gillen :D

    • lol liam neeson literally has no charisma whatsoever

      • All I can surmise from that statement is you have no idea what the word means.

  12. Benedict Cumberbatch would really be a fantastic choice. Im on that bandwagon. He’s a serious rising star, and a fantastic actor, and is actually perfect for the part. He would be great there is no doubt.

Other choices are Vigo Mortensen and yes…Johny Depp…if he goes back to actually acting, like when he was a great actor. However, I think Depp might be on a return to form with Transcendence…I hope.

  13. No Johnny Depp on this list?

    Not interested :V

  14. Johnny Depp Would BE Dr. Strange, and I’d believe he really was!

    • Bleck, no Depp! They’ve squeezed him for every ounce of talent he had in his body and now he’s a caricature of what he once was. Viggo would be perfect, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Le sigh.

  15. I personally pushed for the Keanu inclusion. Here’s why:

By the time Doctor Strange becomes Doctor Strange, he’s supposed to be a stoic center of the Marvel universe. Keanu is the type of guy I could see looking Robert Downey Jr. in the eye and saying “DORMAMMU is coming for your soul.” And not only would he pull that off, the interplay between him and Downey would be hilarious.

More hilarious than the following actors: Luke Evans, Liam Neeson, Viggo Mortensen (not happening), etc.

I hope that Keanu ends up getting this.

    • Keanu Reeves would be more Silver Surfer. I can see him looking Mr. Fantastic in the eyes and saying, “GALACTUS is coming to devour your world.”

      • Nah, he already did that in the Day the Earth Stood Still remake.

        • That’s my 2nd reason why he should play him. He already knows the role. His character in “The Day the Earth Stood Sill” was practically Silver Surfer. Therefore he would be reprising the role.

1st reason is bcuz he played Ted from Bill & Ted. By him playing Silver Surfer, it would somewhat continue Super Hero Squad’s Silver Surfer for the big screen.

        • Interesting you should mention that movie because I just saw “The Man of Tai Chi” and Reeves was JUST as wooden and emotionless as he was in The Day the Earth Stood Still.

We need The Sorcerer Supreme to be more than a block of wood.

  16. Orlando bloom just might be a great choice. I also agree with viggo and iiam

  17. Keanu Reeves? You guys need some sleep.

  18. Benedict Cumberbatch can totally pull off Dormammu!

  19. Cumbercatch would be my choice.

  20. I like the sound of Orlando Bloom as the “Sorcerer Supreme”. And I hope they introduce his origin story thru flashbacks. I want an established/experienced Dr. Strange that finally reveals himself and magic wackyness to the greater MCU. Hit the ground running. His origin is basically Tony Stark’s but repackaged with a magically element.

  21. I will lose all faith in this movie if they pick f*cking Benedict Cumberbatch. I’m iffy with Dr. Strange as it is but if Benedict plays him thats a big nope in my book

    • I understand why you wouldn’t want him to be Strange somewhat. He’s a good actor, but he doesn’t quite look or feel the role. That is until I looked up Benedict Cumberbatch with facial hair. I know believe that man could definitely pull it off.

  22. Personally, I think Eric Bana would be a great choice. He proved to be a formidable villian in the Star Trek. Keanu needs to retire.

If not Bana, I could see Orlando, but does he want to be tied to yet another franchise is the question …

    • Eric Bana. That is brilliant! Honestly the best suggestion I’ve heard and hadn’t heard or considered it yet.

Hate every suggestion on this list except Cumberbatch.

More important to me is that Sam Raimi directs. James Franco wouldn’t be bad in that case.

John Hawkes would be my “interesting” not obvious choice.

  23. Benny Gumberpatch if only because it’d be side-splitting to see him rocking a goatee.

  24. Orlando Bloom!

Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor but I wouldn’t go with him. LOL @Keanu Reeves

  25. How did you come up with this godawful list? Keanu Reeves, Orlando Bloom? Seriously? Benedict Cumberbatch is perfect. Hamm and Bomer have potential.

  26. Bloom or Cumberbatch seem great. I could live with Reeves

  27. If I can’t have Viggo I wouldn’t mind Hugh Laurie. No Keanu. Definitely not Orlando. I love Cumberbatch but I don’t really see him in the role.

    • Laurie was my choice a few months back. Thinking about it for 20 seconds just now, how about Colin Firth? He can handle the transition from egotistic, haughty jerk to thoughtful human and it doesn’t matter whether he’s familiar with the source material (both references to P&P).

    • Anson Mount? The guy kind of reminds me of a younger Viggo for some reason
