5 Actors Who Could Play Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

Published 9 months ago by This is a list post.

Doctor Strange Actors List It's been no secret that of all the Marvel comics yet to be adapted to film, Doctor Strange was a top priority. Recent reports have shown that not only is the film moving forward, but that the studio is interested in big-name talent to lead it. Johnny Depp has apparently been approached most recently, following the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Justin Theroux, all having been rumored for the part at one time or another. So if Marvel is now willing to cast an established star over one the making, the casting choices for 'The Sorcerer Supreme' are wide open. Here is our list of 5 Actors Who Could Play Doctor Strange.

Jon Hamm

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Jon Hamm Given the basic requirements for the character of Dr. Stephen Strange - a cold, arrogant surgeon who injured his hands and must find a new purpose in life - it's not surprising to see rumors that Jon Hamm (Mad Men) is Marvel's second choice for the part. Hamm has made a career of playing borderline detestable figures who audiences can't help but adore, even if he is a bit older than Marvel's usual leading men. But add the fact that Doctor Strange will be trying something entirely new for Marvel (magical, offbeat drama and action), and Hamm's comedic chops could also serve him well. With drama and comedy cred, Hamm's casting would still leave the direction of the film a mystery.

Matt Bomer

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Matt Bomer If Hamm's blend of ego and charm is the direction Marvel's headed, but the studio would prefer an actor a bit younger, then Matt Bomer would be a promising candidate; in fact, on USA's White Collar, Bomer portrays a character not much of a stretch from a young Don Draper. Since being cast for Brett Ratner's failed Superman reboot (and voicing the character instead), Bomer has been a fan-favorite option for Bruce Wayne, as well. We'd argue that Doctor Strange is a better fit, as few proven young actors can pull off Bomer's playboy persona (which made him a fan-favorite for Fifty Shades of Grey) and his lighter side. Again, it seems Marvel is aiming for fame, but if they end up eying a younger, good-looking lead, Bomer remains a choice that wouldn't disappoint.

Orlando Bloom

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Orlando Bloom It isn't just his close proximity to Johnny Depp in the minds of mass audiences that has Orlando Bloom on our list - even if the Pirates of the Caribbean actor did come to fame as part of Disney's blockbuster franchise. Bloom may have failed to remain at the heights of Lord of the Rings or Pirates in terms of fame or recognition, but a little time out of the spotlight isn't a bad thing. That thinking paid off for Marvel by casting Robert Downey, Jr. as the heart of their movie universe, and Bloom's acting skills outside of the limelight are nothing to scoff at. Could Doctor Strange offer him the same chance to shine? Hard to say. But we can see him in the role, which is more than we can say for other names being thrown around.

Keanu Reeves

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Keanu Reeves First things first: yes, Keanu Reeves is a bit eccentric. And yes, his roles are often surprising and divisive. But he already proved up to the task of portraying a sorcerer with knowledge of the occult in Constantine (2005). For good or ill, when Reeves told audiences that staring into a cat's eyes can pierce the veil between humanity and the supernatural, they took his word for it. When Keanu fits a role, he fits, and the enigmatic actor has, in many ways, proved to be both as removed and yet kindhearted as Stephen Strange himself, so we have no question he could give a faithful performance. While many other fan-favorites would raise eyebrows or elicit groans from audiences when they began casting 'spells' or 'summoning spirits,' we believe Reeves would seem right at home - that alone makes him an attractive option.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Doctor Strange Movie Actors Benedict Cumberbatch Few actors have taken the Comic-Con audience by storm in recent years like Benedict Cumberbatch, and with good reason. Roles like 'Khan,' the most iconic villain in Star Trek history, or 'Sherlock Holmes' would catapult any actor into worldwide fame, but Cumberbatch has more than enough talent and presence to not just live up to major roles, but give them new life for entirely new generations. It's hard to think of another actor that could bring the grandeur, ego and sense of wonder to Doctor Strange like Cumberbatch, and the fact that he has become a household name is a one-two punch of 'bankability.' If Marvel is willing to spend top-dollar on a star, then Cumberbatch is a perfect choice - if he would even be interested in the part.

Conclusion

Doctor Strange New Suit That concludes our list of actors that we feel could bring the sense of mysticism, adventure and drama to the upcoming Doctor Strange movie. It's well known that other actors have expressed interest in the role, or look the part like no other, but there is more to making the movie work than simply fitting the cape and collar. What's your take on the film's chances and possible direction? Will the leading man determine how interested you are in the film, or are you a fan of the source material first? 1. You need to add Kevin J. Ryan (from Copper) in that list! For about a year now fans on his twitter have been making it known they’d like to see him as Doctor Strange…

  2. With the possible exception of Orlando Bloom, none of those are good suggestions for the role of Dr. Strange. Have you even read the comics?

  3. Just to preface this I’m a pretty big Dr. Strange Fan and have loved the character since I read the comics as a kid. I’m hoping this will be a franchise like Iron Man and Capt. So I hope they are considering this as much as we (the fans) are………….

I’ve heard some names I hadn’t thought about prior to this. I have to say either of the eldest Stark boys (Robb I prefer though) from GoT -would be quite interesting. Anson Mount and Jon Hamm both intrigue me as well, I’m just not feeling Viggo M., Neeson, Depp, or Bloom (all quite good actors in the right roles etc -no disrespect) but no.

I’ve said Hugh Laurie from the beginning and I’m sticking by that, Andrew Lincoln too- would be awesome but I question whether he’d commit to something that could possibly be very time/career consuming, with such a cable “beast” (TWD) still in it’s prime essentially. I really like Cumberbatch too as Sherlock and Smaug especially, but I would prefer most of the prior mentioned. As for Keanu I think he could pull it off and I think he’d be better than many people here seem to believe, but again, too many of the aforementioned appeal to me more. The only person that I had Not considered prior to perusing this thread was Timothy Olyphant and with “Justified” entering it’s series ending season (I believe) I admit- I am on board! I think he would be perfect honestly, and is probably the only one whom I’d consider more than HOUSE. Admittedly, I’m a big “Justified” fan but those that know his work on that role and his movie resume -would probably agree.

I am kinda mad at myself for not thinking of him sooner.

    • surreal as far as the look of the character from pics I’ve seen I say mybe ‘Jon Stark’ oud be best choice. Ido agree with you on Viggo & Neeson too old & ooksthing like te character which to me is imporant I a way.

I never read the comics, but to me someone that has read them or a least has some form of knowledge would be best espcially someone (like Kevin Ryan) who says he’d love to play strange. Heis not as well known as the other actors either,f not him… being I’m on a Dracula kick what woud you or n of you) think of Luke Evans for the role. (I’m still trying to think of other actors besides those 2)

  4. With this article published 8 months ago I’m sure it has been mentioned, but I see no one other than Liam Neeson playing this character. He has the acting skills, background, credentials and following to pull this off.

  5. After reading through the catalog of actors which have been floating around countless websites comprised of “A” to “B” list actors who could potentially play the role of The Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Strange, I’ve come to believe that none of them could properly embody the essence of this eccentric & enigmatic character. One actor does come to mind which has never been on any list I’ve seen as a potential candidate. That man is none other than SHARLTO COPLEY. His work in “District 9″ and “Old Boy” alone have cemented for me the idea that he and only he could truly capture the nature of what it means to be the tortured individual that is the character of Steven Strange. Given the nature and complexity of the source material and considering that the film will be an origin story, I believe that Sharlto is that one person who could bring that emotional turmoil, fear, human frailty as well as a touch of terror (which anyone would feel after such an accident)to the screen for this character and make it compellingly real. The sheer presence and overall ambiance of Steven Strange should be a frightening one considering all that he has endured over the course of his fictional life. VOTE SHARLTO COPLEY FOR DR. STRANGE!!

  6. Al Pacino is suit for Doctor Strange

  7. is it true that Benedict Cumberbatch will play dr. strange?

  8. Benedict it is! Marvel has released news that it is indeed Benedict Cumberbatch. He has a certain savoir-faire, decorum and presence that resonates what Stephen Strange conveys in the comics. I for one applaud Marvel for not only an excellent choice, but the perfect choice! Time can not pass fast enough for this movie to be unveiled!

    • If it’s cumberdude… I won’t be seeing the movie. He doesn’t look like the comic character, and that’s one criteria I’d use in casting.

      • Yeah at first, I had the same thoughts, until they posted that user/artist created poster that showed Benedict as Stephen Strange. Did you see it? Very convincing….

        • vizions007 you mean the one posted in this article?
Yeah I did & I still do not agree. Not the right hair color (at least dark brown black)

John Hamm & even keanu Reeves (pics from this and the one of the comic version) I can see as Strange but not ‘smaug’

The only thing ‘looks’ wise ‘cucumber’ has is that he’s tall & thin…

          • He’s perfect! In my opinion he’s the best actor out of all them. His type of acting actually fits the category. Looks can always be enhanced through makeup special effects etc. Acting is more important!

          • They went with Cumberbund.
            The “fan favorite”.
            Good luck with this.

            • I agree Shelly! Fan fave isn’t always best.. you want both acting, & as close to the look of the character as possible.

        • The picture is The Journey Into Mystery Picture half way down the page in the link is a glimpse of how he can pull it off. Further down, there is another picture of him in his Mystic Mage attire. Either way, remember, it is the age of miracles (pun intended), and I trust that the Marvel makeup folks will astound us.

  9. Not putting Wilford Brimley in there?

  10. If Robert Downey is not Iron Man nor Sherlock Holmes, i think he is the best actor to play this role.

  11. these seem like some pretty good choices. I think all the actors listed here can portray the good doctor very well. Here are some names that came to mind before I read this article… Gary oldman, Daniel day Lewis, and my personal favorite josh hartnett. I read an article about josh hartnett after seeing bunraku for the first time (since then I have watched it 20-30 times. If you are reading this and haven’t seen this hidden gem check it out. I promise you will love it as much as I do. With names like Ron pearlman, woody harrelson, Demi Moore, and a new favorite of mine Kevin McKidd, it is one of the best stories I’ve ever seen. The cinematography alone is worth a watch.) and he turned down several roles starring as the lead in movie adaptations of my favorite form of story telling, my beloved comic books. He stated he doesn’t want to be locked into playing roles like that. But I think after seeing the recent success of these comic blockbusters, and how much we love these new adaptations he may rethink being the lead in these insanely awesome flicks. And I think playing Dr. Strange would be a great experience for him and us as well. Well that’s my piece. After all that it’s time to read some comics and have Bunraku provide some background. Till next time my friends….
