wong lecturing stephen strange about the time stone in the sanctum sanctorum

When it comes to trying to defeat Thanos, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will need all hands on deck. Even though Captain America: Civil War left the Avengers with only Iron Man and Vision as the two lone healthy members of the team, the disbanded team Cap assembled will surely be back once the phone rings. Thanos' attack presumably in Avengers: Infinity War will not only bring the Avengers back together, but will also bring the Guardians of the Galaxy to Earth to help stop the Mad Titan.

Benedict Cumberbatch has already been confirmed to appear in the third Avengers movie and likely the fourth Untitled Avengers as well, which only further bolsters the range of abilities that will be trying to stop Thanos in his tracks. With seemingly everybody in the MCU (outside of TV characters, most likely) making an appearance, it has now been confirmed that another magic wielder will get involved.

Benedict Wong will debut as fellow magic master Wong in Doctor Strange in a few weeks, but he has now also confirmed to us earlier today - what Feige told Here Be Geeks yesterday - that he will be returning for Avengers: Infinity War.

Wong joins the Avengers at some point in the comic books as well.

Benedict Wong: Yes, so we'll, uh, we'll see him in Infinity War. I'll be...

Are you saying Wong could be in Infinity War?

Benedict Wong: He is. I'm saying he is! I hope that's... Yeah, it is true.

The majority of the MCU heroes will appear in Infinity War, so it makes sense that directors Joe and Anthony Russo are going to continue to bring in supporting characters from other films as well. Wong is one of the first characters of that category to get confirmed, which potentially means he has a prominent role in the film. The confirmation coming at this point also indicates that Wong will not be dying at the end of Doctor Strange, but that was an unlikely scenario already give his long-term role in the source material.

Marvel made an effort to update Wong's character for the purposes of the movies, with him now being more of a leader in the magical city of Kamar-Taj instead of Strange's "manservant" as he was in the comics. This modernization and push for more diversity should continue moving forward, with Wong potentially being able to flex his magical muscles in Infinity War. With Wong now confirmed, it will be interesting to see what other supporting characters - such as Pepper Potts, Happy Hogan, Sharon Carter, Dr. Selvig, or Hank Pym - get appearances in Avengers: Infinity War as well.
