Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch Tom Hardy Doctor Strange: Marvel Interested in Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy

While Marvel Studios runs down the clock searching for a director to fill the void left behind by Edgar Wright’s departure from Ant-Man – a film that was supposed to begin shooting right around now – they’re also already on the hunt for another franchise star. Joining Ant-Man in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Doctor Strange, a movie that found a director in Scott Derrickson (Sinister) this week despite not having a release date.

Given that Marvel has locked down a summer date in July 2016 and will undoubtedly have a pair of features in 2017, the easy assumption is to say that that master of mysticism will have his big screen debut in 2016, two months after Captain America 3. We’ll find out for certain this July at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige tends to make major announcements, and this year we can expect to find out the full Phase 3 slate.

We can also expect to see the first footage for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and if they’re especially ambitious, maybe they’ll bring out some actors for their upcoming movies- maybe even Doctor Strange himself. We’ve known for sometime that Marvel was in talks and looking at a few actors for the part, and according to Deadline, two of the names Marvel is looking are are Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch.

If the decision were to come down to just these two names you can count on Cumberbatch being the top choice. He’s ripe for the picking when it comes to the mightily coveted comic book superhero role (and the lengthy multi-picture contract that comes with it) and he brings a unique charm and quirkiness (see: Sherlock) that would add flavor to The Avengers. There’s also the fact that Hardy has a big potential franchises in development in Mad Max and Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell and he still has fans impersonating his Bane voice from The Dark Knight Rises.

Cumberbatch has been a common staple among fan wishlists for Marvel movie castings (including our own for Doctor Strange) and he even visited Marvel HQ last year and appeared on their podcast. He was a frequently rumored and reported name of interest for Disney’s Star Wars: Episode VII but maybe that was for Disney’s Marvel branch instead?

  1. Both are brilliant actors, but they both may be too busy. Especially when you think about the long term 3 (?) picture deal. Huge fan of both these men.

  2. Benedict would be good. Jared Leto (sans long hair) and Luke Evans all sound good. Penn Badgley too.

    • Luke Evans sounds perfect for the part.

      • Totally agreed on Luke Evans.
But Cumberbatch is not the right choice! Definitely not.

  3. David Tennant. Aidan Turner. Russell Tovey. John Barrowman. Paul McGann. Andrew Scott?

    • Doctor Who fans never seem to quite grasp how little everyone else cares about Doctor Who.

      • And you seem to forget how little everyone cares about your opinion

        • Its not an opinion its a demonstrable fact. How many decades has that show been on the air now? Its not a coincidence that in all that time it hasn’t gotten any traction in popular culture in any country but the one that created it.

          • shows what you know, doctor who is actually MORE popular everywhere else than it is in its home country, with USA being top on that list.

            • Yeah, and I happily look at Dr. Who merchandise in the stores all the time. I was thinking of buying a Dr. Who lamp, but decided instead on the very long Tom Baker scarf. No traction in pop culture? What rock has this guy been hiding under for the last 5 years? It may have been true before they reignited the series, but it’s a huge hit now.

  4. Oh look, yet another Benedict Cumberbatch casting rumour, someone is a busy guy! apparently…

  5. Get an actor who can act and looks like Strange, and I am in.

    • absolutly right on

  6. What about Naveen Andrews for Baron Mordo?

  7. we need someone older than cumberbatch got to realistically the gray hair . someone with a deeper emotional expression. remember he was a sergin phenom and thought life was over he always fought with self doubt it’s what made it such a cool comic. i am a big defender fan and strange was the glue

  8. johnny depp say no more

    • i think so too

      • I’m afraid I must say, “Say no more…about Johnny Depp!”. Not the man for the job, IMO.

      • I do NOT want to see Jack Sparrow as Doctor Strange. IMO

    • As much as I would like to see Johnny Depp take on the role, I’ll have to admit that Benedict Cumberbatch would be an interesting turn for Dr.Strange. If the choices were Hardy and Cumberbatch than I would definitely chose Benedict.

  9. Still think Deep would be close to perfect, but I’ve always been a Cumberbatch fan so I would be happy if he or Tom Hardy got the part.

  10. Qué chingados!!! Qué chingados es eso?! no diversidad? Pedro Pascal es perfecto para esto. Él es papi!!!!!

  11. This has Depp written all over it. I would love to see him and Robert Downey Jr. going back and forth.

  12. I hope tom hardy gets this role instead because i want benedict to be apocalypse in the next x men movie since he also wasnt even considered for the role of batman instead it was ben bloody affleck

  13. What happened to the Johnny Depp Dr. Strange rumors? He already looks like him most of the time anyway and can be both funny and serious.

  14. So about that Liam Neeson

    • YOU ARE RIGHT! Liam Neeson would be a PERFECT Dormammu! You are smart.

  15. I say go younger, some name recognition, and still fits the bill. Tyler Hoechlin would be a great choice.

  16. Benedict as Doc Strange : “I am fire….I am death”

Hardy as Doc Strange : ” When New York is in ashes. Then you’ll have my permission to die”

  17. Hugh Laurie is the perfect choice. Strange is just House with magical powers. He’s got the wit and the charm. If not him, Johnny Depp is the way to go.

    • OMG I think you’ve got it!

Honestly, that is a dream casting for me & I’m a mad Dr. Strange fan. I’ve got other guys I think would be great as Strange (Rhys Meyers,Pascal, Gillen…) but Laurie is a terrific idea. Just 2 things; how would he rock the ‘stache & how physically “fit” would he be for the role?

  18. I just threw up. A little bit for Hardy and ALOT for Cumberbatch.
I want a Dr. Strange film, at least, I did. If it’s Cumberbatch I’m done.
The dude’s the most overhyped actor I can think of in the last 10 years.

    • You clearly have never seen Smaug

    • Agreed! Such an overrated actor, also his fangirls are so annoying.

      • Fianlly! Someone who agrees!
Hearing people consistenly hype up Cumberbatch is so annoying.

        • Chris, why did you respond to your own comments???

BTW, Cumberbatch is a brilliant actor, that’s why people talk about him. I am so sorry you are in the minority.

          • Chris responded to me, not to himself.
And yeah we’re in the minority but I honestly think Cumberbatch would be a horrible Dr. Strange.

      • LOL, all actors’ fangirls are all the same, and they buy tickets like you fanboys, which means $$$. Your comments are pure sexism.

        • I can safely assure you if either Cumberbatch or Hardy are cast as Strange and the filmd ends up being as bad as I think it’d be I wouldn’t be buying anything Strange-related.

  19. Hmm… I’m liking all the attention that Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martel from Game of Thrones) has been getting for this…

He has the charm and the look.. definitely.

    • If its anybody from game of thrones it had better be Aidan Gillen

  20. People please stop with the Johnny Depp as Doctor Strange. He’s not really that good a fit. Far too flighty.

I will say that James Caviezel would be perfect for the role. If you catch him on Person of Interest, you will note he has the premature gray, the smooth commanding voice, and supreme self confidence. He can pull off an aristocratic goatee also.

However Benedict Cummberbach is also a superb choice as well.

    • To add…if you havent seen Count of Monte Cristo that he starred in, you really should.

I have been saying for a long time that he would be great as Dr. Strange simply after watching that movie.

      • OMG! That’s where I first saw him. I say he was COOLNESS itself in that role.

    • James Caviezel i think thats the best fit so far

  21. if you want strange get strange not someone who delivers flash impersonations cumberbatch better for flash gordon

  22. Cumby!
    Cumby!
    Cumby!~

  23. I always hoped for Viggo Mortensen myself… but I can see why they would prefer someone younger.

  24. Luke Evans as Dr. Strange! Luke Evans como el Dr. Extraño! Luke Evans jako Dr Strange! ლუკა Evans როგორც დოქტორი უცნაური,닥터 스트레인지로 루크 에반스! לוק אוונס כד”ר מוזר! डॉ. अजीब के रूप में ल्यूक इवांस! Lucas Evans bilang Dr Kakaibang! Luke Evans kiel Dr Strange!
MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE PHASE 3…. boooms

  25. keep Cumberbatch as a villain, no way Tom Hardy looks the part.
    I want an unknown actor

    • Cumberbatch has strong gravitas and on screen presence to command a whole film, and shouldn’t be wasted as a villain.

      • Agree, but he doesn’t look the part

  26. Neither, hopefully.

  27. Would love to see Jake Gyllenhall as Strange. Itd be more likely to see Cumberbatch and Hardy co-starring in Inhumans. Even then, I don’t think either one will make it into the MCU any time soon.

  28. I dont really think either would be right…Aidan Gillen is the way to go.

  29. Pedro Pascal looks the part, displayed his acting talents remarkably in a short period and has the charisma for the role. Benedict is a solid choice for literally any role though, tough call.
