Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch Tom Hardy Doctor Strange: Marvel Interested in Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy

While Marvel Studios runs down the clock searching for a director to fill the void left behind by Edgar Wright’s departure from Ant-Man – a film that was supposed to begin shooting right around now – they’re also already on the hunt for another franchise star. Joining Ant-Man in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Doctor Strange, a movie that found a director in Scott Derrickson (Sinister) this week despite not having a release date.

Given that Marvel has locked down a summer date in July 2016 and will undoubtedly have a pair of features in 2017, the easy assumption is to say that that master of mysticism will have his big screen debut in 2016, two months after Captain America 3. We’ll find out for certain this July at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige tends to make major announcements, and this year we can expect to find out the full Phase 3 slate.

We can also expect to see the first footage for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and if they’re especially ambitious, maybe they’ll bring out some actors for their upcoming movies- maybe even Doctor Strange himself. We’ve known for sometime that Marvel was in talks and looking at a few actors for the part, and according to Deadline, two of the names Marvel is looking are are Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch.

If the decision were to come down to just these two names you can count on Cumberbatch being the top choice. He’s ripe for the picking when it comes to the mightily coveted comic book superhero role (and the lengthy multi-picture contract that comes with it) and he brings a unique charm and quirkiness (see: Sherlock) that would add flavor to The Avengers. There’s also the fact that Hardy has a big potential franchises in development in Mad Max and Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell and he still has fans impersonating his Bane voice from The Dark Knight Rises.

Cumberbatch has been a common staple among fan wishlists for Marvel movie castings (including our own for Doctor Strange) and he even visited Marvel HQ last year and appeared on their podcast. He was a frequently rumored and reported name of interest for Disney’s Star Wars: Episode VII but maybe that was for Disney’s Marvel branch instead?

  1. Cumberbatch all the way. He’s a great actor and he’s got that otherworldly look.

    • Cumberbatch ALL THE WAY!!! I want to seen him apart of the team under the leadership of Captain America.

  2. I wasn’t feelin Cumberbatch for a second until i seen the fan made poster.

    • Oded Fehr FTW!!

      • +10000000000

  3. Oded Fehr

    • YES

  4. Wooo this is a surprise. I would have never pictured neither of these actor to portray Doctor Strange. But if I had to choose I’ll pick Cumberbatch. :)

  5. I’m still hoping for Pedro Pascal (Red Viper – Game of Thrones).

    • Certainly a more interesting choice.

    • He’s definitely a more feasible/available choice than Cumberbatch and Hardy

  6. At least if they cast him as DS it will stop the “Cumberbatch for everything” comments we see so often! hahahahahahaa

Or not, the “Elba for everyting” comments haven’t stopped. hahahahah ahahaha ahahahah hahaha

  7. Though I think he’s much better as Punisher, I’m team Hardy in this one.
Just the thought of him as Strange, kicking ass while chanting magic spells already makes me giddy hahaha. And if you’re worried he’s too big, he has slimmed down for his Elton John role.

Chances are both actors will not be cast though, too busy and all. Gonna be hard to squeeze their schedule for Doc Strange and Avengers 3.

    • Lol… Too big? He’s like Tom Cruise size…

  8. Dr. Strange should be played by a Latino actor –
NOTE: I’m NOT saying to change Dr. Strange’s ethnicity or anything about the character in anyway –- just to open the casting options to more than the standard white guys- no offense white guys

ie. – someone like Nestor Carbonell or similar type they NEED to open up the casting so it’s not just another white guy – no offense white guys – but an actor like Nestor who can play multiple ethnicities – there are many light skinned or ethnically ambiguous Latino actors who could bring something unique and different from all the other male leads from the other films

Benjamin Bratt would be an EXCELLENT choice – a solid actor who can definitely pull off Dr. Strange -
if you haven’t seen his film – Pinero – about tragic poet and playwright Miguel Pinero – watch the film asap & then give an opinion
    here’s a scene from Pinero: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v
here’s a photo of him with a goatee – spitting image of the Dr. Strange: http://www.dvdsreleasedates.co

Latino actors – like Nestor Carbonell and Benjamin Bratt – among many others – can play Non-Latino characters.

for any “white” actor mentioned – there is an equally TALENTED Latino actor – who can play white (if that’s even important) -that should be considered & given a chance – and Dr. Strange is the perfect character for Marvel to cast with an open mind – Nestor & Benjamin Bratt are just two examples – others could be Oscar Isaac or may be Gael Garcia Bernal or Diego Luna or Santiago Cabrera or Rodrigo Santoro ? … the list goes on

casting a non-white actor speaks volumes to the modern world – and FYI the reason many studios try to make tentpole film casts multi-ethnic – is not about being PC – it’s about being smart from both a creative & a business standpoint and also being realistic the largest movie going audience at the box office in the US is the Latino community (this is fact by the MPAA & other studies) – and demo-graphics have the Latino community growing fastest over any other demo – the U.S. is no longer White dominant and many families are now mixed in many ways – ie. multi-cultural – and anyone who can’t appreciate that is living in the past

here’s some articles you may find of interest re: film audiences & the Latino community – read these articles – be informed

    http://www.thecredits.org/2013

a Latino was just added to the cast of Fast & Furious 7 -who also
happens to be a popular singer and Vin Diesel made an appearance at his
recent concert to make the announcement – it’s not an accident

and remember this: Linda Carter – the original Wonder Woman …. is half-Mexican !! and no one ever had a problem with that

fellow readers – PLEASE respond with comments re: opening the casting options – and please view the links above
Hollywood needs to stop being so myopic in it’s way of casting and portraying people of color

  9. Hah, two Star Trek villains.

Ben’ looks more Strange. Hardy is still muscular, yeah?

  10. I’m for Cumberbatch. Not that I don’t think Hardy would do well because he’d absolutely kill it. His acting talents are just too stellar to be tied up in Marvel movie franchise land, which would demand too much of a time consuming commitment. I think the movie universe would be better served with him continuing to bring a plethora of different characters to life. However, if he’s going to be tied down in franchise world anyway with Mad Max and/or Call of Duty, I think he should do Strange instead, as neither one of those franchises interest me very much.

  11. Meh to both. Raúl Esparza is my pick.

  12. Disvel,

Pick up the phone, call Keanu. A few months later be happy with all the cash you are taking to the bank. The End.

  13. Pls not Benedict Cumberbatch… He’s so unlikeable…
Doctor Strange is a hot guy, so pls keep it like that!

  14. Pedro Pascal could be good! :D

  15. Matt Bomer with a goatee. He’s got the look and the build to pull off Stephen Strange

    • If he do get picked, many people would mistaken him with Henry Cavill aka Clark Kent/Superman.

Seriously put a picture of both Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill together, and you could have sworn that they’re identical twin. And they’re just an inch apart. The similarity is uncanny…

  16. Pedro Pascal is still Doctor Strange to me. He could easily adapt his GOT character for some Marvel action.

Seems like Cumberbatch is in everything and we still have to see Hardy as Mad Max.

  17. Karl Urban would be great too

  18. Got to go with Benedict for this one, he looks the part.

  19. They are excellent and charismatic actors (especially Cumberbatch) but I´d rather see a man that looks more mature. something like Rob Downey.

  20. I gladly would see in this role Johnny Depp.

    • me too but people who don’t know s*** about movies dont want to see johnny depp

  21. 2 words: NATHAN FILLION!

  22. Big fan of both but Jim Caviezel, Aiden Gillen and recently Pedro Pascal gets my vote.

I’d also give Jonathan Rhys Meyers a shout.

    • Finally! Someone else that brings up Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I was losing hope in the sense & sanity of Screen Rant’s community! lol ;-)

I also nod in approval with your 1st 3 names, but it’s Meyers that gets my top vote.

Cheers & have a strange day lol

  23. Cumberbatch all the way. Just think of interaction between him and RDJ or Hiddleston on screen together. Golden!

  24. Oooooooh… BY THE HOARY HOST OF HOGGOTH! Benedict Cumberbatch is an alright actor. But people try to shoe-horn him into EVERY random role to the point it’s a running joke. I have list of favroite actors but, I am smart enough to know some roles are not for them and obviously studios have the same thought, hence them not being casted.
Everytime I see or hear Cumberbatch’s name thrown in by some fanboy/fangirl I just don’t see intelligence in them or the choice…of the fan not the actor. Seriously just give it a break. I have said it before; him as Dormammu,in physical costume CGI MoCap head and face, would be fine. My only fear is type casting him as flame based CG characters. But not some fanfic fantasy casting as Doctor Stephen Strange. I need the roles casted already to put this noise to bed.

  25. I am saying this because I am a fan of the MCU and Benedict Cumberbatch.

NO WAY!!! Please. if this happens, Sherlock’s next season will be moved from 2016 to something way in the future.

    • AMEN, SISTER!!! (or brother)

But wasn’t they really plan on releasing Sherlock s4 on 2016? since there’s 2 years gap between each series/season…

  26. If I had to choose I suppose I’d choose Ben, but neither would be my first pick. I think Ben could do it well. He’s talented, has an interesting look, and can play many different characters so I’m confident that I wouldn’t see the actor instead of the character (as is the case with Tom Cruise. He’s Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise in every movie he’s in) when I watched the movie. Not Tom though. I suppose he could surprise me and all and he’s also a very talented actor, but he just doesn’t have the right look imo. Honestly I’m just glad this movie is getting made and has a director who is used to doing the supernatural. I kinda hope this movie is a little scary or at least has some scary parts. He fights demons. There has to be at least a bit of horror element in here right?

  27. no thanks on both.

  28. I’m still waiting for a Black Panther film

    • Me too. That needs to happen sooner rather than later.

  29. Cumberbatch has become the new Nathan Fillion. Any kind of iconic role, and his name seems to pop up. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I enjoy both actors’ work

    • THANK YOU! two birds and all that…

    • The new Nathan Fillion? I’ve heard it all now!
